Abstract

This study was aimed at investigating the English Department students' perceptions in Satya Wacana Christian University towards the use of multiple choice questions. The participant was composed of seventy-four students in Basic Grammar classes. The inventory of English Department students’ perceptions was constructed to measure students’ perceptions. The results revealed that students preferred multiple-choice questions more than other question types. They believed that multiple-choice questions are less difficult, less complex, clearer, more interesting, and fairer than other question types. They also believed that multiple-choice exam gives them a better chance to get a high score. In terms of psychology, the students felt more at ease or less anxious in doing multiple-choice exam compared to other question types. The overall findings showed that multiple-multiple-choice questions are more beneficial than harmful. As a conclusion, students' perceptions toward multiple-choice questions are not much different from the researchers’ perceptions.
