ABSTRACT

ADHIKA AGUNG PRATOMO. Hibridity and Resistance of Pakistanis in

London As Seen t

hrough Two Main Characters in Hanif Kureishi’s “My Son

The Fanatic”: A Postcolonial Study. Yogyakarta: Department of English

Letters, Faculty of Leters, Sanata Dharma University, 2013.

This thesis discusses Hanif Kureishi’s short story entitled “My Son The

Fanatic”. This short story tells the different reactions

given by migrants from

Pakistan who move into London. The different reactions appear in a Pakistani

family. In details, the father and the son in that family have different attitude

toward British society and their Pakistani identity.

This thesis aims to identify the different reactions given by migrants. They

are acceptance (hibridity) and resistance of new national identity on Pakistani in

London. There are three problems which are solved in this thesis. They are (1)

How are the two main characters of Parvez and Ali described? (2) What are the

reactions of Parvez and Ali toward British society in London? (3) How Parvez and

Ali can be considered as hibrid and resistant?

The method of study in this thesis is library research. The primary source

is the short story entitled “My Son The Fanatic” by Hanif Kureishi. The secondary

data are thesis, journal, and other books of theories. The approach used to analyze

this short story is postcolonial approach.

ABSTRAK

ADHIKA AGUNG PRATOMO. Hibridity and Resistance of Pakistanis in

London As Seen t

hrough Two Main Characters in Hanif Kureishi’s “My Son

The Fanatic”: A Postcolonial Study. Yogyakarta: Jurusan Sastra Inggris,

Fakultas Sastra, Universitas Sanata Dharma, 2013.

Skripsi ini membahas cerita pendek dari Hanif

Kureishi yang berjudul “My

Son The Fanatic”. Ce

Sumber utamanya adalah sebuah cerita pendek berjudul “My Son The Fanatic”

yang dikarang oleh Hanif Kureishi. Data sekundernya adalah skripsi, jurnal, dan

beberapa buku teori. Pendekatan yang digunakan untuk menganalisa cerita pendek

ini adalah pendekatan postkolonial.
