Abstract
This present study aims to investigate students’ problems in writing a narrative essay for
FBS Writing Narrative and Descriptive students at Satya Wacana Christian University.
The study addresses the following question: What are students’ problems in their
writing narratives? The participants consisted of 20 Indonesian students in the English
Department of Satya Wacana Christian University who already took the narrative and
descriptive writing class at 2010/2011 academic year. The data was collected from
semi-structured interviews, in which all of the participants were individually
interviewed about their problem in narratives writing. The results show that the most
problems lay in their organizational skill whether in sentence or paragraph level and
their proficiency in English language rather than the grammatical. Therefore the study
suggested that organization will be emphasized in writing class, how to choose and
organize idea into a structured and interesting paragraph.
