ABSTRACT

Name of interviewer : Natalia Wahyudi Name of respondent : Ricky Stefano
Day & date of interview : Friday, March 16, 2012 Place of interview : Novotel Hotel Bandung
Natalia : Good afternoon, my name is Natalia. I am going to interview someone who is now in front of me. He is ...
Ricky : Afternoon. My name is Ricky. I am a Hotel PR at Novotel. Natalia : I have ten questions for you. The first question is what makes
you less confident when giving presentations? Please mention them!
Ricky : Firstly, it is because I do not prepare the material and there are many judges. Moreover, my English is not fluent.
Natalia : Ok. So what is the effect of lack confidence?
Natalia : Oh. So the effect is nervous. You see nervousness can cause us to stutter while speaking. The next question is: do you feel nervous or lack of confidence every time you give a
presentation? Please explain!
Ricky : Exactly, I am always nervous. But lack of confidence is not always because if we learn the material well as what I did in my first presentation, the presentation was better though still a bit nervous. However, in my second presentation, I did not properly prepare the material and therefore not confident.
Natalia : Ok. How did you feel when giving a presentation at BEOTY? Ricky : I felt nervous because I did not prepare myself well.
Natalia : Ok. Why do you seldom prepare yourself for the presentation? Ricky : Well, the information is given to me only at short notice.
Consequently, I do not prepare it well and become less interested.
Natalia : Is that the reason? Ricky : Yes, that is right.
Natalia : Next, did you feel disturbed while improving your gesture? Explain!
Ricky : Yes, because I was not ready so my body became stiff and I just stood still.
Natalia : Oh, really?
Natalia : What can you do to improve your self-confidence?
Ricky : Firstly, knowing the material and theme, and then preparing the material for the presentation.
Natalia : Ok, next. Are there any negative effects from your nervousness? Please mention them!
Ricky : Ehmm. If I feel nervous, I cannot think and answer the questions.
Natalia : Do you often use visual aids in your presentations? If not, Why?
Ricky : At Novotel, I did not use visual aids in my first presentation because they were not available. In the second presentation, the visual aids were prepared. Unfortunately, I did not prepare myself so I did not notice that there were visual aids.
Natalia : Have you ever tried to cope with the lack of self-confidence? If yes, explain how?
Ricky : Firstly, I talked with several friends who were assigned to give a presentation; secondly, I ate chocolate to make myself
calmer; thirdly, I did a little exercise, like push up to make my body warm.
Natalia : I think, those are the questions I wanted to ask you. Thank you for your time.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Study
In the modern era, competition in the workplace is getting harder because there are people who have a number of skills. One of the skills is presentation skill. In the Marketing Department, especially Public
Relations, the staff should be able to write, talk, and even introduce themselves attractively. Besides, they have to be able to promote a new product interestingly. That is why presentation skill is very useful and important in many aspects of work and life. Nalin Jayasuriya in an article entitled “Importance of Good Presentation Skills in Today’s Competitive World”, states:

in business today is the ability to present well. (par. 2)
Hence, people in business and education, including PR Staff must have good presentation skill.
There is a significant problem at Novotel Hotel (henceforth, NH). There were six employees who took part in the Best Employee of The Year (BEOTY) Presentation for all divisions at NH. One of them is a Public Relations staff. When I made an observation of his presentation at BEOTY, I found out that he had difficulty in giving his presentation
concerning NH. When he did his presentation, he looked nervous, tensed, and had a lack of self-confidence. He also had a difficulty in answering the questions from the jury. Consequently, his presentation was a failure. Seeing the problem mentioned above, I intend to raise this problem into the topic for my term paper, entitled “Overcoming the Lack of Self-Confidence of a PR Staff at BEOTY Presentation at NH Bandung”. Hence, I would like to analyze the problem and research on the solution to the problem systematically and critically.

1. Why does the PR Staff at NH Bandung have lack of self-confidence in his presentation?
2. How can the PR Staff overcome his lack of self-confidence in his presentation?
C. Objectives and Benefits of the Study
The first objective of this study is to know the reasons why the PR Staff has difficulty in giving presentation in BEOTY. The second objective is to know how to overcome his problem of lack of self-confidence.
This study offers three benefits. Firstly, the PR staff becomes aware of his weakness and knows how to overcome it. Secondly, the readers can get useful information of how to give good presentations. Thirdly, I as the writer of this term paper can understand how to give an excellent
presentation not only in business but also in other professional fields.

Besides, the hotel has a swimming pool, fitness centre and spa, lounge bar, and The Square Restaurant. Novotel Hotel Bandung is located on Jalan Cihampelas No. 23-25 Bandung 40171, West Java – Indonesia. This statement refers to an article entitled “Novotel Bandung Hotel”. The mission statement of 2012 is “Let’s keep the highest standard of service and performance”, which can be found in the bulletin board at the Sales and Marketing Department office, NH Bandung.
E. Methods of the Study
There are several methods of the study that I use to collect the data for this term paper. They are my internship journal containing the data from my internship for three months, interview to collect the data from a PR staff to support the information in this term paper, observation to collect the data from the PR staff when giving a presentation, library research to complete the theories to support the analysis in this term paper.

CHAPTER IV
CONCLUSION
During my internship at Novotel Hotel Bandung as a backup Public Relations staff, I notice a serious problem with a PR staff. He has lack of self-confidence when giving a presentation at BEOTY NH Bandung. There are three causes of the problem. The first cause is that he did not prepare the presentation material. The second cause is that he felt nervous during his presentation. The third cause is that he could not speak English fluently. The effects of the problem are the PR Staff could not answer the questions, and he started to stutter.
There are three potential solutions to overcome this problem. The first potential solution is the PR Staff prepares the presentation material well. The second potential solution is he should improve his non-verbal skills. The third potential solution is that he should use visual aids to help the audience understand his presentation.

to choose the first and the second potential solutions, namely the PR staff prepares the material for his presentation well, and the PR staff should improve his non-verbal skills. I choose the first potential solution for the reason that it is important because preparing the material is necessary to make a successful presentation. As a result, the PR staff can know and understand the material. Futhermore, this information is vital in helping and enhancing his self confidence because he will know what is going to be presented to the jury. This way, his presentation will be more effective. In an article entitled “Speech Preparation #1: How to Prepare a Presentation”, it is stated, “Speech preparation is the most important element to a successful presentation” (Dlugan par. 2). From the quotation, I can conclude that a good speech preparation is vital to develop someone’s skill in giving a better presentation.
The second potential solution that I choose is non-verbal skills because they can make the PR staff’s presentation more effective and interesting. As a result, the PR staff can express his feeling when giving his presentation. For example, Barrack Obama and Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono use their non-verbal skills, like eye contact and gestures to convey their speech. Therefore, the audience will feel comfortable and interested in listening to them.
Moreover, in an article entitled “Effective Non-Verbal Communication in Business”, Miranda Brookins states:
Communicating in a business environment requires more than just

communication cues enter the room before you speak. Everything from gestures, eye contact, posture, appearance and facial expressions offer an indication of moods and thoughts. Because of this, it's important to be aware of the non-verbal signals you send while working in the office with co-workers and clients, during business meetings and interviews, at conferences and when you're giving presentations. (par. 1)
From the above quotation, I can conclude that non-verbal skills are imporant not only in the offices but also in other events.
To conclude, I find out that giving a presentation needs skills and
