Key words: Vocabulary mastery, teaching technique, against the clock game. The writer found the problems faced by the fifth grade students of SD 8 Cendono Kudus in academic year 2015/2016 in learning English, especially in vocabulary mastery; they were low in vocabulary mastery. It caused the students just do the exercises based on the LKS instruction, by this way the students were bored in learning process and students were just silent and waited what the meaning of the words from the teacher.

The purpose of this research is to find out whether there is a significant difference between vocabulary mastery of the fifth grade students of SD 8 Cendono Kudus in the academic year 2015/2016 before and after being taught by using Against the Clock Game. It is cards printed with picture and also its name that drawn by a student in the blackboard that must be guessed by his or her friends as fast as possible. Against the Clock Game is one of games that uses by writer as technique of teaching.

The subject of the research is the fifth grade students of SD 8 Cendono Kudus in the academic year 2015/2016 with the total number 24 of students. The design of the research is experimental research. And the instrument that used in this research was written test in the form of multiple choice test.

The result of this research showed that vocabulary mastery of the fifth grade students of SD 8 Cendono Kudus in academic year 2015/2016 before being taught by using Against the Clock Game was categorized sufficient. The score of mean and standard deviation were 66.76 and 9.38. Meanwhile the vocabulary mastery of the fifth grade students of SD 8 Cendono Kudus in academic year 2015/2016 after being taught by using Against the Clock Game was categorized good. The score of mean and standard deviation were 76.9 and 8.76. So, the calculation of t-observation (t0) got the result 9.132 is greater than t-table 2.07 in the predetermined level of significance 0.05 with {df (23) = 2.07} and the alternative hypothesis is confirmed. It means there is a significant difference between the vocabulary mastery of the fifth grade students of SD 8 Cendono

Kudus in academic year 2015/2016 before and after being taught by using Against

the Clock Game.

Based on the result above, it can be concluded that Against the Clock

Game is effective technique to teach English vocabulary to young learner or

Elementary students. Therefore, the English teacher can use Against the Clock

Game as technique of teaching, in order the students do not feel bored and they

Kata kunci: Penguasaan kosa kata, tehnik pengajaran, permainan against the clock Penulis menemukan permasalahan yang dihadapi oleh siswa kelas V SD 8 Cendono Kudus Tahun Ajaran 2015/2016 dalam pembelajaran bahasa Ingris, khususnya dalam penguasaan kosa kata; mereka lemah dalam penguasaan kosa kata. Hal ini dikarenakan siswa hanya mengerjakan soal di LKS, dengan hal ini siswa merasa bosan dalam proses pembelajaran dan siswa hanya diam dan menunggu arti dari kosa kata yang dibacakan oleh gurunya.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara penguasaan kosa kata kelas V SD 8 Cendono Kudus Tahun Ajaran 2015/2016 sebelum dan sesudah diajar dengan menggunakan permainan

Against the Clock. permainan Against the Clock adalah kartu yang di cetak

dengan gambar beserta nama dari gambar tersebut yang di gambar oleh seorang siswa di papan tulis yang harus ditebak oleh temannya dengan cepat. Permainan

Against the Clock adalah salah satu permainan yang digunakan oleh penulis

sebagai tehnik pengajaran.

Subjek penelitan ini adalah siswa kelas V SD 8 Cendono Kudus Tahun Ajaran 2015/2016 yang berjumlah 24 siswa. Rancangan penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian eksperimental. Dan instrumen penilitian yang digunakan di penelitian ini adalah tes tertulis dalam bentuk pilihan ganda.

Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penguasaan kosa kata kelas V SD 8 Cendono Kudus tahun ajaran 2015/2016 sebelum diajar dengan menggunakan permainan Against the Clock di kategorikan cukup. Nilai rata-rata (mean) danstandar deviasinya adalah 66.76 dan 9.38. Sedangkan penguasaan kosa kata kelas V SD 8 Cendono Kudus tahun ajaran 2015/2016 sesudah diajar dengan menggunakan permainan Against the Clock di kategorikan baik. Dengan menunjukkan nilai rata-rata (mean) danstandar deviasinya adalah 76.9 dan 8.76. Sehingga, perhitungan dari t-observasi mendapatkan hasil 9.132 yang lebih tinggi daripada t-tabel 2.07 di tingkat penetapan signifikan sebelumnya 0.05 dengan derajat kebebasan 23=2.07 dan hipotesis alternatifnya adalah diterima. Hal tersebut berarti ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara penguasaan kosa kata kelas

V SD 8 Cendono Kudus tahun ajaran 2015/2016 sebelum dan sesudah diajar dengan menggunakan permainan Against the Clock.

Berdasarkan hasil diatas, dapat disimpulkan bahwa permainan Against the

Clock adalah tehnik yang efektif untuk pengajaran kosa kata pada anak-anak atau

siswa Sekolah Dasar. Oleh karena itu, guru bahasa Inggris dapat menggunakannya sebagai tehnik mengajar, supaya siswa tidak merasa bosan dan mereka akan berani untuk menyampaikan kosa kata bahasa Inggris yang mereka ketahui.
