ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION

A.

Background of the Study

The topic of this Term-Paper is based on my internship at SD Santa Ursula,

Bandung from 6 January 2016 until 5 February 2016. I was an English trainee

teacher and also a teacher assistant during the internship. I worked for 8 hours per

day from Monday to Friday, from 7 am to 3.10 pm, except those days when the

school was off for the outing activities. I had several responsibilities, such as

helping the homeroom teacher to assist the pupils in all class subjects in grade 1

(classes A, B, C), grade 2 (classes A, B, C), grade 3 (classes A, B, C), and

teaching English in grade 4 (classes A, B, C), grade 5 (classes A, B, C), and grade

6 (classes A, B, C). Each class mostly consists of 20-25 pupils. The pupils in

grade 1 until 3 studied four to five subjects each day, while the pupils in grade 4

until 6 studied six subjects each day. In addition, I made English oral quizes and

(4)

When I was doing my internship, I found that nine pupils of grade 5 in class C

were very aggressive in class. This situation is recorded in my internship journal

dated 15 January 2016 and 29 January 2016. They walked around the class, kept

talking to each other, and never listened to me when I explained the lesson. This

situation is in line with Shore (2016) that,” Aggressive students present a

significant challenge for teachers. An aggressive child can engender a climate of

fear in the classroom, creating [create] anxiety among other students, and

distracting [distract] them from their schoolwork” (para. 1). I was so frustrated at

that time. The situation made me feel pessimistic about myself. It is obvious that I

could not handle the children’s aggressive behavior.

Based on the above explanation, I would like to discuss my difficulty in

handling the aggressive behavior of nine pupils at class 5C at SD Santa Ursula as

the topic of my Term-Paper. I think children’s aggressive behavior is the common

problem which will always be experienced by any teacher or trainee teacher.

Moreover, this problem made my internship not run well so I want to investigate

further. According to Thomas and Bierman (2013), “Research suggests that

exposure to grade school classrooms with many aggressive members may increase

risk for persistent aggressive behavior problems” (para. 1). Thus, every teacher

should be able to understand and handle aggressive children appropriately.

B.

Identification of the Problem

(5)

1. Why did I have difficulty in handling the aggressive behavior of nine

pupils at class 5C at SD Santa Ursula ?

2. How did the problem influence the class and I ?

3. How should I solve the problem effectively ?

C.

Objectives and Benefits of the Study

This Term-Paper has three objectives and three benefits. The three

objectives are to find the causes of the problem, to discover the effects of the

problem, and to present the best solution to overcome the problem. The first

benefit is for the teachers at SD Santa Ursula, they will be easier to handle the

aggressive students effectively in the future, especially for the 5th grade. The

second benefit is, the readers of this term-paper can gain some information

about how to overcome and deal with aggressive students. The third benefit is,

I can learn several effective ways in handling students with aggressive

behavior.

Description of the Institution

The following information is taken from the school profile that was given

by the school staff. SD Santa Ursula Bandung is an elementary school in

Bandung. It was established in 1927 under the patronage of Prasama Bhakti

accreditation of the school is A. The vision of SD Santa Ursula is to be

community of innovative, creative, critical learners in education and faith with

Santa Angela’s spirit (Appendix D, p. 2). The school has two missions, the

first mission is providing the good quality of education to prepare the learners

to enter the higher level of education and to be ready to socialize in society.

The second mision is developing the potentials and skills in a critical, creative,

and innovative way. The principal of the school from 2014 until now is Mrs.

F.X. Erna Susanti, S.Pd. The school has 50 employees including teachers,

staff, technicians, security staff, and janitors. (SDK Santa Ursula, 2014)

Method of the Study

To do this research, I used two methods. The first method is the field

research, namely my observation and teaching activities during my internship

from Wednesday, 6 January 2016 to Friday, 5 February 2016 at SD Santa

Ursula in Bandung. The data is recorded in my internship journal. The second

method is library research. I searched for theories that could support my

analysis. I used both printed and electronic sources for my references. The

theories were used for analyzing the causes of the problem, the effects of the

Limitation of the Study

The focus of this study is on handling my students at SD Santa Ursula. The

subjects of research are myself and nine pupils at class 5C at SD Santa Ursula.

The age level of the pupils are 10-11 years old. The period of my internship

was from 6 January 2016 to 5 February 2016. Therefore, the limitation of this

study is only the nine pupils that consists of six boys and three girls aged 9-10

years old.

G. Organization of the Term Paper

This Term-Paper starts with the Abstract, Declaration of Originality,

Acknowledgements, and Table of Contents. This Term-Paper contains four

chapters. The first chapter is the Introduction, it consists of Background of the

Study, Identification of the Problem, Objectives and Benefits of the Study,

Description of the Institution, Method of the Study, Limitation of the Study,

and Organization of the Term-Paper. The second chapter discusses the

Problem Analysis with the explanation about the causes and effects of the

problem. The third chapter is Potential Solutions. The last chapter is

CHAPTER IV

CONCLUSION

In this chapter, I will discuss the best solutions to overcome my problem which

was handling the aggressive behavior of nine students at class 5C at SD Santa

Ursula Bandung. There are three causes of the problem. The first cause is I had no

experience in handling issues related to classroom management especially in

dealing with aggressive students in the class. The second cause is I was not

assertive enough in handling the students. The third cause is there was no clear

system about rules in the class. There are three effects of the problem. The first

effect is I felt pessimistic in teaching the students. The second effect is the class

became very noisy and out of control. The third effect is the discussion of material

in this class was slower than the other classes. There are three potential solutions

of my problem. The first potential solution is I will set the classroom rules and the

system of rewards and consequences. The second potential solution is I will be

assertive in handling the students. The third potential solution is I will do a

collaborative team teaching with an experienced teacher.

Based on the analysis, I will choose all of the potential solutions to solve this

(9)

is because I believe that by combining them, I will be able to handle similar

problem in the future properly. The problem will not be solved if I only choose

one or two of them. These three potential solutions are related with each other and

needed to solve the problem. Firstly, I will apply the first potential solution by

creating and applying the classroom rules with the system of rewards and

consequences. After that, I will apply the second potential solution by being

assertive in handling the students. After the first two solutions applied, I will

apply the third potential solution by asking an experienced teacher to do the

collaborative teaching together.

By applying these three potential solutions appropriately, I hope it will help

the nine aggressive students at class 5C at SD Santa Ursula to learn and

behave appropriately. Furthermore, I hope that I will be able to handle
