About the Author
Right after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Anton Myrer enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served for three years in the Pacific. Wounded on Guam, he returned to Harvard, graduated, and began an illustrious literary career in which he wrote such memorable novels as The Big War, The Last Convertible, and A Green Desire. He died in 1996.

The only problem arises after the characters leave Harvard. Once they move into the real world, their lives seem forced and not as interesting as they did when they are all together as a unit. It is as if the total is not equal to a sum of the parts.
It is still refreshing to read a story that provides us with such a vast landscape, so finely crafted. It is a book filled with prose-like writing that is elaborate and detailed without being bogged down by the words.
I really can't recommend this book enough. I think that you will find this to be a book you can expect to one day be taught in school.

Great story. I read it years ago as a Readers Digest condensed version. I've read it several times over the last 30 years, and bought the out of print hard copy to give to my 26 year old granddaughter. She, like me , is an avid reader. I hope she enjoys it as much as I have.
