ABSTRACT

Due to the limited time that the students have in learning English inside the class, they could not only rely on their in-class-learning. The study on out-of-class language learning here provides insight on how students of the English Department perceive out-of-class language learning activities. The purpose of this study is to understand students’ perceptions toward out-of-class language learning activities and its contributions to their language skills development. This study used qualitative approach and questionnaires were distributed to 100 seniors to collect the data. The result revealed all of the students agree that out-of-class language learning is important. Most of them perceive that their outside activities give contributions to certain language skills. Furthermore, the activities that the students do are more on receptive skills rather than productive once, such as listening to English songs, watching movies, browsing in the internet, and using dictionaries. Those are the activities that the most students have outside the class. Intrinsic motivation also played a big role in their out-of-class language learning since most of the students have personal goal in doing their outside learning. Indeed, the biggest contributions of students’ out-of-class language learning is on listening skill, speaking skill, English vocabularies, reading skill, writing skill and grammar knowledge.
