Jigsaw
Learning Model
Jigsaw
is
a cooperative learning strategythat has been used
for
aboutforly
years' Thistechnique was invented
in
1971by
ProfessorElliot
Aronson andhis
graduate studentsfrom
the University
of
Texas

It
provides
studentsLL4
with
an opportunity to actively help each otherin
theirlearning.
Each studentis
assignedto
a'home gtoups'
and
an
'exPert
group'consisting
of
membersfrom
different
home groups. Students meetin
their
expert group todiscuss specific ideas
or
solve problems. Theythen
turn
to
their
home SouP, where all
members
share
their
expert
knowledge(http ://www. lkdsb.net/program/elementary/int ermediate/di/files).
The procedure
of
The Jigsaw method areas
follow: First,
students aredivided
up
into
groups. The
numter
in
each group depends onthe
numberof
subtopics.It
is
namely

or
"original

Second,
each memberof
the
groupis
assigned a sectionor

the
material.
Next,

they are
in
o'expertgolry". Thia{
the
expert group
learns
themateriat together and decides on
how to
teachthe
material
to
the
original groups.
Then, stutlents return totheir original
groups, whose members are eachnow
an expertin
oneof
thedifferent areas
of
the topics being studied, and teachtheir
areaof
expertise to the other group members. In
the end, aquiz
is
given.At
that time no team members may help each other. The
Jigsaw learningmodel
can be usedto
cover a large amount of materialquickly,
tointoduce
studentsto
different perspectives on a topic,to
introduce topics and create interest, and as a research strategy. In
language classes,there are
many
subjects such as Vocabulary,Reading

A
class hasmore
thentwenty
students,let's
say.They
have various backgrounds andcharacteristics. Some are
infiovert
the
othersare
extrovert. Some
are
'easy
going',
theothers
are
'too
careful'
students. These maycause
a
problem
in
communication.
Thosewho
have assertiveness,psychologically,
will
face no dilemma. Those who haven't been able
to
be
assertive possiblyfind
somediffrculties
in
building
communication.
This
type of
students
will
never
free from
such
this problemif
they never changetheir
styles to be an assertive persons.Jigsaw
will
give the students much moreopportunities
to
interact intenselywith
variousbackgrounds
of
personalities.It
means thatthey
will
have
more
chanceto
learn
to
be assertive.It
is not easy to do, but theywill
feelmore
convenient
after
practicing
it.
Thelecturer should
encouragethe
studentsto
be assertive.Including effort is lifelong
learning.It
isrelated
to
the
independency
in
leaming.Although
Jigsawis a
cooperative learning,it
requires students to be independent.
To
have a good discussion, whereall
members are activeand
not
dominatedby
certainlimited
member,every
of
them
should participate
in
sharingideas, responding questions,
etc.
It
demandsthe
studentsto
be
independentin
searchinginformation, managing
it
efficiently,
and shmingit
to the others.6. Group
Skills
Some activities in the Jigsaw demand the students
to
work in
tearn; startingactivities
of
grouping,
discussionin
the home and

will
meet andwork
with
different
charact€ristics and qualities people

groups.They
work
togetherin
theteams
to
achieve
mutual
objectives.
Toachiwe the
objectives
they
have
to

asolkl team work- They
will
leam how to createa
good atuosphere and relationship
in
their
groups, how to be good listeners,
how to form
tnrst and openness.unong them, etc.
Interpersonal
skills of
the studentsin
the groups may become thevital
factorto
build
asolid
teamwork. For
example, whenthey
arediscussing

topic
and one
of
them
sharing ideas,the
quality
of
their
interpersonalskills
will
detenninehow they give

It

Intensive interaction and teamwork
will
push them
