FACTORS INFLUENCING STUDENTS’ WILLINGNESS TO COMMUNICATE IN

TRANSACTIONAL SPEAKING COURSES

Abstract

This study focuses on factors that influence students’ willingness to communicate in Transactional Speaking courses in English Language Education Study Program of Satya Wacana Christian University. There were 106 students who enrolled in Transactional Speaking class participated in filling in an open-ended questionnaire. The data was analyzed qualitatively using a content analysis to analyze the students’ willingness to communicate factors. Results show four major factors that influence students’ willingness to communicate in the class. They are students’ familiarity with interlocutor, students’ correctness of speech, teachers’ role and students’ motivation. This study is beneficial for speaking teachers in creating better ways to teach and avoiding students’ unwillingness to communicate in Transactional Speaking class.
