Prevalence of Lip Sucking Among Children Aged 6 to 9

ABSTRACT
Oral habits in children are a common problem faced in the society. Lip
sucking is one of such habit. Often overlooked, persistent lip sucking can bring
upon deleterious effects upon the child’s dentition.
This research is aimed at identifying the signs of lip sucking among
children aged 6 to 9.This is a descriptive research using a survey technique and
was conducted at Rumah Sakit Gigi dan Mulut (RSGM) Sekeloa, Bandung
through observation for signs of lip sucking and filling up a survey form.
From this study, the number of children identified to have at least one sign
of lip sucking was 44 children. Out of the 44 children, 11 (25%) children were of
6 years of age, 8 (18%) were of 7 years of age, 11 (25%) of 8 year olds and a total
of 14 (32%) of 9 year olds. Whereas, the remaining 56 children examined were
not found to manifest any signs of lip sucking.
Based on the study done in Rumah Sakit Gigi dan Mulut (RSGM,
Sekeloa) it can be concluded that the prevalence of lip sucking is 44% .
