FROM OUR READERS
Your corrections, your opinions, and your requests:
Here’s your forum for telling us what’s right and
wrong in each issue of
Oracle Magazine,
and for
letting us know what you want to read.
ONE_ERROR_FOUND
Because I have never found one before, I can’t help but point out an editorial typo on the front cover of the July/August 2010 issue of Oracle Magazine. Both on the cover and in the table of contents, your summary of Tom Kyte’s article says that he “meets NO_DATA_FOUND”, when it should actually read “meets NO_DATA_ NEEDED”. He already knew about NO_DATA_ FOUND, but he had never known about the NO_DATA_NEEDED exception.
Please continue to offer these code snippets and educational articles in the magazine. It encour-ages me to keep current and to keep learning.
Jeff Mick
MORE VIRTUALIZATION
I went through “The Virtual Enterprise” by David A. Kelly (Oracle Magazine, July/August 2010) and found it really interesting, and it also helped to address some of my doubts about virtualization. Thanks to the author for writing this article.
I look forward to more articles about virtu-alization in the future so that I can continue to learn about the topic.
Balan Anil Kumar
MORE HISTORY
I see that at oracle.com/oramag it’s possible to read past articles from the Oracle Magazine
archive, but they only go as far back as 2005. Is it possible to read any Oracle Magazine arti-cles prior to 2005? I would be very interested in this possibility.
Marco Pinzuti
The editors respond: We currently do not host most Oracle Magazine articles and columns from before 2005. Technology moves very quickly, and we believe that most of our older content— five years or older—has minimal value to current Oracle technologists. Ask Tom columns and some other technical content from before 2005 is still available, but our news stories, customer reference articles, and other content is not.
We do not currently plan to maintain a histor-ical archive for most content that is more than five years old, but if other readers are interested in an Oracle Magazine archive, please send an e-mail to opubedit_us@oracle.com.
MORE PADDING
I was wondering if you had any plans to offer

Does Oracle provide an electronic copy of Oracle Magazine that can be downloaded and viewed through the iPad?
Hussein Mahmoud Hussein
After recently purchasing an Apple iPad I have become accustomed to the digital format of managing and viewing various publications. I would very much like to change my printed subscription to a digital version that is iPad compatible.
Ken Roth
I am a longtime subscriber to Oracle Magazine
and am just curious if the magazine is available
in electronic form suitable for viewing on the Apple iPad?
Cliff Wakefield
The editors respond: Oracle Magazine strives to deliver content to subscribers through the best possible formats, including print, digital, and coming soon, the iPad.

MORE JD EDWARDS
You seem to do nothing to focus on Oracle’s JD Edwards products. Is there any plan to rectify this?
Luc Bureau
The editors respond: Profit, The Executive’s Guide to Oracle Applications, provides coverage of JD Edwards products. There is also a new special issue of Profit focused on JD Edwards available at oracle.com/profit.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2010 ORACLE.COM/ORACLEMAGAZINE
FROM THE EDITOR
What Would You Do
with a Million?
Organizations are doing more with
Oracle Exadata and its 1 million I/Os
per second.
W
e first featured Oracle Exadata V2 and the Sun Oracle Database Machine in the November/December 2009 issue of Oracle Magazine. We reported on the September 2009 product release announcement, and I wrote a few words in this column focusing on some significant product metrics. One of those key metrics is the fact that Oracle Exadata V2 is twice as fast as Oracle Exadata V1 for data warehousing. Another metric: Oracle Exadata V2 is capable of executing 1 million random I/Os per second. Almost a year later, the numbers for Oracle Exadata V2 continue to impress—and so does what this game-changing technology is doing for business.
WHAT’S IN AN I/O?
I/Os have long been considered “expensive” operations in application and query design, and minimizing I/Os has been a key goal of a lot of application and query tuning. Keeping data in fast main memory, limiting slower disk-based I/Os, and avoiding I/O conten-tion are all critical to the performance of high-volume online transaction processing (OLTP) applications and data-intensive query routines. But the information explosion continues, and keeping all your enterprise information in main memory is not always possible. What is possible is making the interconnect from main memory to storage better with InfiniBand technology; making persistent memory better with solid-state Flash storage; and making storage software that can optimize what the storage hard-ware and connections can do to prevent I/O bottlenecks. Along with InfiniBand and Flash technology, Oracle Exadata software is the
key to delivering 1 million I/Os per second in Oracle Exadata V2.
This extreme I/O capacity goes so many times beyond the I/O requirements of typical applications that the next question becomes “What would you do with a million I/Os per second?”
WORKING WITH I/Os
In this issue, “Oracle Exadata at Work” (page 42) presents the experiences of three organizations using Oracle Exadata and its unmatched I/O capacity. Executives and technologists from these companies describe getting more information about more information in data warehouses, storing and quickly accessing terabytes of information across millions of rows, and running more and faster calculations in OLTP applications. They also talk about the value of Oracle Exadata and the additional oppor-tunities it presents for their organizations.
The question “What would you do with a million I/Os per second?” has been addressed by the many organizations that are currently using Oracle Exadata V2; “Oracle Exadata at Work” presents a small part of the answer.
IN ADDITION
Note the addition of MySQL Sunday to the Oracle OpenWorld, Oracle Develop, and JavaOne triumvirate; it promises to be a great day. And I hope to see as many of you as I can at one of the many events taking place Sunday, September 19, through Thursday, September 23—not to mention Java University on September 24—in San Francisco, California.

Oracle Delivers Sun Fire x86 Clustered Systems
Oracle has unveiled its next-generation Sun Fire x86 clustered systems, designed for cus-tomers that run a mix of demanding Oracle and non-Oracle enterprise workloads across a grouping of systems.
The new Sun Fire x86 portfolio includes a versatile set of blade systems, x86 rack servers, high-performance networking products, and advanced systems manage-ment capabilities. Based on the Intel Xeon 5600 and Intel Xeon 7500 processors, these systems ship with Oracle Solaris, Oracle Enterprise Linux, and Oracle VM and deliver an end-to-end virtualized environment that provides a completely tested and supported solution for Oracle applications. They are also certified to run Red Hat Linux, SUSE Linux, Microsoft Windows, and VMware.
“The launch of our Sun Fire x86 clustered systems underscores our commitment to delivering the best, most differentiated x86 clustered solutions,” says John Fowler, executive vice president of systems at Oracle. “We are the first to deliver high-performing
application-to-disk solutions that can be managed and supported as a single system. This is a major step forward in providing a completely optimized solution that delivers enterprise-class performance and scale while reducing management complexity and costs for customers.”
All Sun Fire x86 clustered systems include Oracle Integrated Lights Out Manager, which provides a single management interface for virtualization features as well as all the hard-ware components including blades, servers, storage, networking, and power. Sun Fire x86 customers who use Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center can achieve a highly scalable and seamless management system that provides lifecycle management and process automation capabilities.”
“Datacenter managers have always looked for price/performance improvements from their infrastructure investments, which are increasingly being achieved through fully integrated hardware and software,” says Matt Eastwood, group vice president at IDC. “Oracle’s new x86 blade and rack systems provide a complete solution for running Oracle software, delivering an integrated stack designed to reduce CAPEX [capital expenditure] and OPEX [operating expense] costs in the datacenter.”
Oracle Introduces Oracle Enterprise Content Management Suite 11g
Oracle Enterprise Content Management Suite 11g, a comprehensive, integrated, and high-performance content management solution, is now available to help organiza-tions increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve content security.
A component of Oracle Fusion Middleware, Oracle Enterprise Content Management Suite 11g consists of Oracle Universal Records Management 11g, Oracle Imaging and Process Management 11g, and Oracle Information Rights Management 11g.
The new suite is built on a unified content repository and provides an easy-to-use, end-to-end solution spanning imaging, Web, document, and records management. It builds on Oracle’s solu-tion for enterprise applicasolu-tion documents through preintegration with business
pro-cesses, business applications, and desktop productivity tools. Its unified repository can support high-volume content ingestion applications, such as invoice processing, and high-volume content delivery applica-tions, such as e-commerce sites.
23 BRIEFS
ORACLE MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2010
Oracle Coherence 3.6 Ships
Oracle Coherence 3.6, the latest release of Oracle’s distributed in-memory data grid product, is now available. Part of Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g, Oracle Coherence 3.6 is a critical component of application grid and private cloud deployments.
Oracle Coherence 3.6 introduces Coherence Quorum, a feature that enables greater control of capacity and resource management in grid and cloud environments. It also introduces Coherence Query Language, a SQL-like query language that lets developers use query syntax to manage and use Oracle Coherence.
Another new feature is the Oracle Coherence 3.6 Session Provider for the Microsoft .NET Framework, which supports session management for Microsoft .NET Framework–based applications.
“With greater data scalability, reliability, performance, and security, Oracle Coherence continues to set the benchmark for distrib-uted in-memory data grid products,” says Cameron Purdy, vice president of develop-ment at Oracle.
MySQL Enterprise 2.2 Now Available
Oracle has released MySQL Enterprise 2.2, which includes the latest MySQL open source database, monitoring tools, and production support. A key component of this release is MySQL Enterprise Monitor 2.2, which provides organizations a means of more effi-ciently managing MySQL servers and helps reduce downtime by identifying problems before they become outages.
MySQL Enterprise Monitor delivers enhanced query performance monitoring, improved security, and integration with MySQL Support. It also provides enhance-ments for collecting, searching, and viewing query performance data, allowing developers to filter and analyze patterns that may hinder key system resources. New features include Query Analyzer Execution Notices, which
pinpoint problem queries so that DBAs and developers can find and fix perfor-mance problems,
and MySQL Enterprise Connector Plug-ins, which allow users to gather and send SQL and related performance data to the query ana-lyzer. In addition, GUI-based tools continu-ously monitor the MySQL database and help developers implement MySQL best practices.
MySQL Enterprise also includes 24/7 production support, with guaranteed response times to assist users in the devel-opment, deployment, and management of MySQL applications.
“DBAs and developers need solutions that help them manage their MySQL servers efficiently and allow them to identify perfor-mance issues before they become expensive, time-consuming problems,” says Thomas Ulin, director of MySQL development at Oracle. “MySQL Enterprise 2.2 offers pow-erful tools for query performance moni-toring, improved security, and an enhanced administration experience—all of which help alleviate many common pain points DBAs and developers face.”
Oracle Application Express
Release 4.0 Available
Oracle has released Oracle Application Express 4.0, its rapid Web application development tool for Oracle Database. The latest release helps reduce the time and complexity of building Web 2.0 applications and reports.
New features of Oracle Application Express 4.0 include Dynamic Actions, which make implementing client-side and interac-tive functionality declarainterac-tive; Plug-Ins, which allow the Oracle Application Express frame-work to be readily extended with custom item types, application processes, and dynamic actions; and RESTful Web Services, which provide an alternative to SOAP.
“When Oracle Application Express was first introduced six years ago, the goal was to simplify the development of fast, secure Web applications for Oracle Database,” says Mike Hichwa, vice president of software develop-ment at Oracle. ”Oracle Application Express 4.0 extends that vision with new capabilities that significantly reduce the time and com-plexity of developing database-centric Web applications.”
NetBeans Integrated Development Environment 6.9 Unveiled
NetBeans Integrated Development Environment (IDE) 6.9, the first NetBeans release under Oracle’s stewardship, intro-duces JavaFX Composer, a visual editor and layout tool for building JavaFX applications. With JavaFX Composer, organizations can build, visually edit, and debug rich internet applications and bind components to various datasources, including database and Web services. NetBeans IDE 6.9 also offers OSGi interoperability, enabling developers to easily create OSGi bundles for applications based on the NetBeans platform.
The new components in NetBeans IDE
6.9 support accelerated JavaFX application development. NetBeans IDE 6.9 enables developers to rapidly create Web, enterprise, desktop, and mobile applications using Java EE, JavaFX, and scripting languages.
“NetBeans 6.9 continues the tradition of providing the best open source IDE for Java application developers,” says Ted Ferrell, chief architect and senior vice president, tools and middleware, at Oracle. “We believe that the ease of use and developer produc-tivity provided by NetBeans is key in helping developers of any skill level take advantage of all great Java technologies.”
