Abstract
This research is meant to learn the correlation between students’ majors in Senior High Schools and students’ achievements (GPA) in English Letters Study Programme, Soegijapranata Catholic University. Besides the correlation, other factors that influence students’ achievements based on students’ perspectivesare also discussed. The investigation was done with favour of a set of data (contained students’ GPA) and a set of questionnaires to collect data about students’ perspective toward factors influencing their achievements. The questionnaires were distributed to 107 students from batch 2010 – 2012 randomly. The data, then, analysedto present the result in form of descriptive analysis. While, students’ GPA and students’ majors in Senior High Schools were analysed using SPSS v.20.0 to get inferential analysis. The results show that the correlation between students’ GPA and majors in Senior High Schools was relatively weak and having negative correlation. Besides the educational background from Senior High Schools, there are other factors such as experience, motivation, and age that influence learner’s success in second language acquisition as well. Moreover, among other factors, motivation is the strongest factor of all in determining the success of learning a new language.
