THE USE OF INDONESIAN IN ENGLISH CLASSES IN SMP N 1

SALATIGA

ABSTRACT

Pro and cons about the use of L1 in L2 classes has been discussed for many years. There have been many arguments stated by the opponents and proponents of L1 use. Much research has also been conducted to find whether it is better to use or avoid the use of L1 in L2 classes. However, the agreement of the use of L1 in English classes has not been reached. The aim of this study was to analyze the use of Indonesian by the teachers of English in SMP N 1 Salatiga. The participants were two teachers from grade 7 and 8 from the school. The data were collected using observation and stimulated-recall interview. This study found that the teacher used nine types of Indonesian use in their English classes. Their main reasons for using Indonesian were help the students to learn English.
