ABSTRACT
In the process of learning English as a second language, according to Clarke (2009), each young learner will progress through identifiable stages. Besides, the development and ability in language learning are affected by social, aptitude, psychological, and environmental factors. This study was conducted in order to investigate the strategies used by preschool teachers in teaching speaking to young learners. The participants of this study were four teachers of Real Fun Rainbow Preschool, Salatiga and the data were collected through semi-structured interview and classroom observation. The results of this study indicated that the strategies used by preschool teachers in teaching speaking to young learners included the following: 1) teaching using songs; 2) teaching using pictures; 3) teaching using gestures; 4) teaching using realia/ real objects; 5) teaching using translation method; 6) teaching using repetition method/ mechanical drill; and 7) teaching using a strict rule. The findings of this study are hoped to give benefits for preschool teachers and contribute to a better understanding of teaching speaking strategies dealing with young learners.
