Guide for Authors
Mathematical Biosciences publishes carefully selected mathematical papers of both research and expository type devoted to the formulation, analysis, and numerical solution of mathematical models in the biosciences. Manuscripts are received with the understanding that their contents are original and are not being submitted for publication elsewhere. Submission also implies that all authors have approved the paper for release and are in agreement with its content. Manuscripts are usually sent out for two independent reviews.
Upon acceptance of an article by the journal, the author(s) will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the Publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information under the U.S. Copyright Law. Authors receive proofs, which should be proofread, corrected, and returned within 48 hours of receipt.
Manuscript submission. Authors should submit the original and three copies of the manuscript. Submission of an additional electronic copy on disk, with title, ®rst author, and format indicated, is optional but strongly encouraged. All copies will be used in the reviewing process and will not be returned. Manuscript submissions should be sent to the Editor: Michael Savageau, Ph.D., Professor and Chair, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, University of Michigan Medical School, 5641 Medical Science Building II, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-0620, USA.
Organization. Whenever feasible, the main lines of the development should be given in the text, emphasizing the structure of the argument and its biological relevance. Detailed proofs should be put in appendices. An abstract of about 200 words or less should precede the main body of the text followed on the same page by a list of 3±6 keywords. Footnotes, reference lists, tabular material, and ®gure legends should be typed on separate sheets and follow the main body of the text. In the journal, footnotes will be placed at the foot of the page on which they are cited.
Form of manuscript.Type and double space all material on 81
211 in. or A4 white paper. On the title
page, include the full names, institutions, and locations of all the authors, and clearly indicate the name and mailing address of the corresponding author as well as the corresponding author's telephone number, facsimile number, and e-mail address if available. Keywords should re¯ect important facts of the manuscripts; general terms for keywords should be avoided, e.g. cell, evolution. Indicate references to the literature in the text by full size Arabic numbers in brackets, i.e., [1], and cite in sequential, not alphabetical, order. Indicate footnotes to the text by superior numbers. Number all pages sequentially including title page, abstract, text, footnotes, references, tables, ®gure legends, any ®gures presented on 81211 in. or A4 paper, and appendices.
Mathematical notation. Use typewritten letters, numbers, and symbols wherever possible. Any unusual character should be identi®ed and de®ned the ®rst time it occurs. Distinguish between the number ``1'' and the letter ``l'' and between zero and the letter ``O,'' capital or lower case, wherever confusion might result.

Theses, Reports, and Other Unpublished Material: Style as a journal article with as much source information as possible.
Figures.Figures should be submitted as professionally done as possible, complete and ready for photo reproduction. Lettering and data points should be large enough so they can be read with ease when reduced to ®t on the journal page (61
38 in; 1620 cm). Label the back of all ®gures, line drawings,
and photographs with ®gure number and author name. Specify orientation.
