more

robust, both width and depthof

body

greaterthanin thatspecies.

Head

shortand broad, the snout even wider and

more

bluntly tringular than in latifrons,

when

seenfrom above. Interorbital space a shallow groove, some-

what

wider thanin latifrons.

A

deep transversegroovebehind the nasalspines, onebehindtheeyes and one behindthe occiput. Ter- minalrostral plate with a single curved upright spine smaller than the nasal spines; supraocular and two occipital pairs of spines, as usual. Subocular ridge higher than in related species and bearing strongerspines, two on theposteriorpart ofthe cheek and two on thepreopercle.

No

spines on marginof preoperclebelowthe ridge.

Cheeks below the suborbitalridgenaked, withoutplates or prickles.

Opercular ridge

much more

conspicuous than in latifrons. Margin ofpreorbital entire.

Mouth

wide, maxillaryextendingscarcelybeyondthefront ofthe orbit. Teethin wide villiform patches in jaws and on

vomer

and palatines, the vomerine patch emarginateposteriorly.

Two

barbels constantly present on the end of the maxillary, the anterior the shorter.

Four

barbels arise from the margin of pores near

man-

dibular symphysis. Branchiostegal

membrane

with an extermely narrow free-fold posteriorly, where itcrosses the throat.

Eye

con- tainedslightly

more

thanthreetimes inthelengthoftheside ofthe head; on theeyeballabove the pupil aseries of 5 to 7 strongspine- lets, hooked obhquely backwards andinwardstoward medianhue.

Bod}' with the ridges higher, the spines stronger, and the inter- veningfaces

more

deeplyconcave thaninlatifrons, thearrangement otherwise similar. Four pairs ofstrong postanal plates presentin the type, and 24 heavy plates onthebieast.

The

ventral series of plates bearspines posteriorly as far as thefront of the analfin, all

other series being strongly spinous throughout.

No

plates are presentonthegularorbranchiostegalmembranes.

First dorsal spine inserted on the seventh, thelast spine on the thirteenth plate of the dorsalseries; firstrayofseconddorsalonthe seventeenth, the last ray on the twenty-second plate. Anal fin insertedopposite theseconddorsal. Thereare 16 plates (sometimes 15) behind the last dorsal ray. Pectoral wider than in related species, with 16rays, thelower6 or 7 thickened, withexserted tips.

The

finisevenly truncate

when

spread, thelower rays scarcely pro- truding beyond the general margin of the fin; the

membrane

not incisedbetweentheupper unmodified and thelower thickenedrays.

Caudal rounded; ventralsreaching slightly

more

than one thirdthe distance tofront of analfin, theanus immediately behind theirbase in adults, moreposteriorlyplacedintheyoung.

Color oHve-brown, darker than in related species, this strongly

marked

on the underside of the tail, where the dark areaextends well forward of the anal fin. Breast, abdomen, and lower side of headwhite, as isalso

much

ofthe postaxillary region.

About

8 in- distinct narrow dark crossbars on the back, better

marked

on the spines than on theintervenmgareas of the plates.

A

black blotch on the shoulder extending to the upper partof the axil. Pectoral translucentor whitish, adarkblotchoccupyingthebaseoftheupper rays, and awide darkbaronthe distalhalf ofthefininvolving the TAjs only and notreachingtheir tips. Spinous dorsalwitha broad black baratbaseandablack margin, the rest ofthefuiwhitish. Soft dorsal similar, but the basalblack barand the succeeding white bar narrow, the marginal black area involving

more

than half the fin.

Caudal black, v/ithanarrowwhiteedge and an obhquo whitishbar near baseofupperhalf offin, Ventralsandanalwhite.
