somewhat

smaller eye andgreaterdepth.

The

presenceofpricklesonthe pectoralfinscan notbeverified.

The

occiput is arched,

somewhat

as in P. cepJidlus, with broad interorbitalarea and wideblunt snout; the

mouth

ishorizontal, the maxillary extendingtobelowposteriorfom-thof orbit. GiU-opening wide, extending along theupperhalf ofthe pectoralfin.

Upper

ray ofpectoralon a levelwith middle of orbit. Pectoral without deep notch, the lower three or fourrays forming a lengthened lobe, the longestray reachingbeyondthefront oftheanal; the raysimmedi- ately above this lobe are more widely separated than those in the upperpartoffin.

Head

short and broad, withlarge eyesand very shortsnout, the latter protruding shghtlybeyond themouth;

horizontal, the maxillary reaching to below middle of eye. Teeth acute, simple.

toopposite the tenth or eleventh pectoralray. Pectoralinserted high,theupper ray onlevel ofmiddleofeye, thelowerrayin avertical linewhich

falls behind the orbit; the two fins well separated below. All the raysoflower lobearewidely exserted; none extend beyondfrontof anal.

The

lobes are short, and are connected a rather deep notch, withtwoorthree widely spacedrays.

Dorsal beginning above the upper end of gill-sht, thefirst three rays exceedingly dehcateandspine-hke,apparently separatedfromthe others

by

a short interval of

membrane

which contams no rays.

The

caudal contains fourfuUydevelopedrays, itsbasalthirdjoined todorsalandanal.

Color translucent or whitish throughout, the sides with minute distant black specks, visible only with aid of a lens.

Resembling P. ulocJiir in the restricted giU-sht and the wide pectoral,butdiffering

among

other charactersintheshorter, deeper body, and the wider, many-rayed caudal fin. In P. ulocMr, the trunk tapers toan extremely slender tail, the fin composed ofbut 4 rays. InP.caudatus,the baseofthecaudalhasaneasilyapprecia- blewidth and the fincontains 10 or 11 rays.

AUied to Paraliparis and Nectoliparis, agreeingin habitwith the former, and with the latter in having but 5 branchiostegal rays, while allother genera andspecies in thisgrouphave 6.

No

trace of a ventral disk. Vent posterior in position, lying in the area between the lower pectoral lobes. Pectoral fin greatly reduced, but the two lobes connected, not separate and distinct as in Nectoliparis. Teethsimple, innarrowbands. Branchiostegals5.

NECTOLIPARIS PELAGICUSGilbertandBurke.

A

very widely distributed deep-pelagic form, extending from the coastofsouthernCaliforniathroughout the BeringSeaand southto the shoresofHokkaido,Japan. Ithasbeenfrequently capturedin Bering Sea in open intermediate nets dragged at 300 fathoms. In the present collection, severalspecimens are included, whichappar- ently entered theopen trawlonits

On

account of its

smaU

size, it is not possible to verify the characters alleged to distinguish this speciesandtheverycloselyalliedR.alleni.

The

scales arenot yetfuUydeveloped,butleavethe topandsides of head, the nape, and a strip along base ot dorsal fin naked.

The

depth is one-seventh the length to base of caudal.

The

first five dorsal rays are shorter than the succeeding and appear slightly differentiated.

The

colorpatternissharply definedona fightbackground. Along medianlino ofsides, runs a narrow

brown

streak,

marked

below

by

about 10 V-shaped prolongations, and above

by an

equal

number

which alternate with the first.

The

basalhalf of the dorsal finis

marked by

14 or 15 small dark

brown

spots, evenly spaced. Anal withanarrow submarginalblack streakedged withwhite. Pectorals, ventrals,andanalunmarked. Dorsal,46; anal, 32.

The

teethhave beeninadequately describedinthespecies. In the front of each jaw is a close-set series of strong conical teeth, the series continued on the lateral margins of the jaws and the teeth there greatlydecreasmginsize. Behind the outer seriesis arather broad patch of short vilhform teeth, which are confined to the anteriorpartofthe jaw, thepatchinthemandiblesmallerthanthat in the maxillary.

Inthespecimen before us the diameter oftheeye isshghtlyless

longestpectoralraysarebelowthemiddle ofthefin, butthelowermostraysare progressivelyshortened.

The

black blotchesonsides areformedas local intensificationsof"brownish barswhich descend from the back.

Each

of the blotchesis forked indistmctly, forminganinverted V.
