1. What are EFL Learners’ experiences toward the use of e-learning in English subjects?

The researcher found out that each participant of EFL learners had a similar experience in undergoing the process of learning English through asynchronous e-learning. The researchers then composed participants’

experiences into some themes:

a. Easily Accessing Course Information

In English asynchronous E-Learning, the researcher found that the students have freedom access to course information in e-learning.

This opportunity was used by students to search and find all the information at their fingertips.

In English asynchronous e-learning, the EFL learners were assuming that E-learning was easy to access for search the information and it helped them for the teaching and learning process.

It was explained by student P1, as follow:

“Selama proses pembelajaran menggunakan e-learning, saya merasa belajar menjadi lebih mudah, karena saya bisa dengan mudah mengkases bahan ajar (Bahasa Inggris) yang ada di e- learning. Mencari materi pembelajaran di bahan ajar juga mudah, karena hanya mengetikkan kata kunci saja, saya sudah menemukan materi yang dibutuhkan, berbeda halnya dengan menggunakan buku, ketika menggunakan buku saya harus membuka lembar demi lembar untuk menemukan materi yang dibutuhkan. Mengumpulkan tugas juga lebih enak karena saya tidak perlu lagi datang ke sekolah, begitu pun dengan mengisi daftar hadir. 52

“Along the teaching and learning process using e-learning, I felt that study is easier because I assume it’s easy to access English learning material that is already available in e- learning. Looking for the material in the learning material is too easy because I just type the keywords and I found the materials that I needed. It is different when I learn using a

book, when using a book, I should open page by page to find the material that I needed. Submitting the assignment is too easy because I did not should go to school, even fill the presence.

It was strengthened by the statement from the students P2 as follows:

“Belajar bahasa Inggris menggunakan E-laerning adalah hal baru buat saya, jadi di masa Masa pandemic seperti saat ini, belajar menggunakan e-learning sangat membantu. Seperti, saya dengan mudah bisa mengkases dan mendownload bahan ajar.53

“Learning English by using E-learning is a new thing for me, so in a pandemic situation like nowadays, learning using e- learning is helpful, for instance, I can easily access and download learning teaching material”

It was supported by the teacher’s statement, as follows:

“Dikarenakan adanya virus corona ini, semua kegiatan belajar mengajar harus dilakukan dari rumah, hal ini bertujuan untuk membantu mengurangi penyebaran virus ini. Dengan adanya e-learning ini sangat membantu sekali di situasi sekarang ini.

Siswa tetap bisa belajar dengan aman di rumah masing- masing. Dengan adanya e-learning ini juga, memberikan pengalaman baru bagi siswa. Biasanya mereka belajar tatap muka dikelas dengan konsep teacher centre. Sekarang mereka belajar dengan system online dengan konsep students centre.

Fitur-fitur e-learning juga sangat membantu siswa dalam proses pembelajaran. Fitur e-learning didesain sedemikian rupa untuk mempermudah siswa dalam belajar.54

“Due to the corona virus, all teaching and learning activities must be carried out from home, it aims to reduce the spread of this virus. The existence of e-learning is really helpful in the current situation. Students can still study safely at home. This e-learning also provides a new experience for students.

Usually, they learn face to face in class with the teacher center concept. Now they study with an online system with the concept

of a student center. E-learning features are also very helpful for students in the learning process. The e-learning feature is designed in such a way to make it easier for students to learn”

Based on the statement above, it can be known that most of the EFL learners learn English using e-learning as a new experience for them. Most of the EFL learners agree that in this situation, the utilization of e-learning in the learning process is really helpful. E- learning helps students in the teaching and learning process during the pandemic of COVID-19. E-learning is also equipped with features that help students in learning, so the learning process becomes easier.

In addition, student P3, P4, P5, P7, P8, P11, P12, P15 explained how e-learning becoming a solution in the learning process during the pandemic of COVID-19 as follows:

“Belajar menggunakan e-learning, menurut saya sangat membantu, karena saya bisa mengambil dan belajar dari bahan ajar yang telah disediakan. Dan juga saya bisa melihat pengumuman apa saja yang berkaitan dengan pembelajarn di timeline e-learning, dan saya juga bisa melihat teman-teman dan guru-guru yang online di hari itu.55

”I think, learn using e-learning is helpful. Because I can take and study from teaching-learning material that was already in e-learning. Then, I got to see friends and teachers who were online at that time.”

“Di masa pandemic ini, saya merasa belajar menggunakan e- learning cukup mudah, salah satu contohnya, mengerjakan tugas lebih mudah dan langsung ada nilainya. Dan untuk materi pembelajaran saya biasanya mengambil materi dari bahan ajar yang sudah disediakan.56

“In this pandemic situation, I felt learning using e-learning is pretty easy, the example, doing an assignment is easier and immediately we know the score. Then, for the learning material, I usually take from the teaching materials that were already in e-learning.”

“belajar bahasa inggris menngunakan e-learning susah-susah gampang, karena saya merasa lebih mudah menemukan materi yang saya butuhkan melalui bahan ajar elektronik daripada di buku, dan pengerjaan tugas di CBT juga enak, apabila tugasnya dalam bentuk pilihan ganda, kita langsung bisa melihat nilanya.57

“Learning English using e-learning is less difficult, because I can find easier the material that I needed through electronic teaching material than in the book, then doing an assignment in CBT is also good, if the assignment is in multiple-choice form, we can immediately know the scores.”

“Pembelajaran bahasa inggris menggunakan e-learning di situasi saat ini sangat membantu, karena guru sudah menyediakan semua materi pembelajaran bahasa inggris baik dalam bentuk video ataupun dokumen.58

“Learning English using e-learning in the current situation is very helpful because the teacher has provided all English learning materials in the form of videos or documents.”

“Belajar bahasa Inggris menggunakan E-learning menurut saya memudahkan dalam proses pembelajaran, seperti saya tidak perlu mengumpulkan tugas ke sekolah, saya hanya perlu foto tugas saya dan menguploadnya di e-learning.59

“My opinion, Learning English using E-learning makes the learning process easier, like I don't need to submit assignments to school, I just need to take photos of my assignments and upload them on e-learning.”

“Senangnya belajar menggunakan e-learning sangat praktis dan efisien, ketika saya kurang memahami materi bahasa inggris, saya bisa belajar secara mandiri dengan

mendonwload bahan ajar yang telah disediakan di e- learning.60

“The great thing of learning through e-learning is practical and efficient when I don't understand English material; I can study independently by downloading the teaching materials that have been provided in e-learning.”

“Belajar menggunakan e-learning menurut saya sangat membantu sekali, karena saya bisa belajar dan mengakses informasi disaat yang bersamaan.61

“Learning English through e-learning in my opinion is very helpful because I can learn and access information at the same time.”

From the explanation above, it can be known that the EFL learners attempt that e-learning is easy to use. They assume that e- learning is easy and efficient, for instance, they do not need to go to school to submit the assignment; they just take a photo of their assignment and submit it in the e-learning. Then, e-learning provides all the English material needed by students.

It was supported by the teacher’s statement, as follows:

“Penggunaan E-learning di situasi sekarang ini sangat membantu dalam proses pembelajaran.saya selalu menyediakan materi pembelajaran di e-learning, dan para siswa bisa mendonwload dan mempelajari materi tersebut.62

“The use of E-learning in the current situation is very helpful in the learning process. I always provide learning materials on e-learning, and students can download and learn the material.”

Based on the statement above, it can be known that the EFL Learners are facilitated with various types of English materials was provided by the teacher in e-learning., and they can learn at any time.

The statement above was strengthened by the observation that the researcher did. The researcher had seen the English teachers who provided the learning materials in e-learning. This is done by the teacher to facilitate students in teaching and learning during this pandemic. The teacher showed the features of e-learning to the researcher that are usually used by the teacher to put the English material, then the student can download and learn the material every time and everywhere.63

Based on the interview and the observation above, it can be concluded that the EFL learners’ experiences at Tenth grade MAN 3 Jembrana in English subject using e-learning confirmed that e-learning is easy to use and easy to access the information, learning by using e- learning is also very helpful for students in the learning process. The way students describe their experiences shows that they enjoy in their new learning environment adaptation. One of the benefits of e-learning is it allows the learner to learn at their own pace. E-learning provides flexibility and creates good interaction between students and learning materials. In addition, teachers use e-learning tools to upload or provide instructional materials, handouts, and assignments for

students, then EFL learners can learn the English material every time they want.

b. Autonomous Learning

Learning English using asynchronous E-learning gave students to learn at their own pace, students were given the freedom to seek knowledge for themselves in English asynchronous e-learning.

Students, of course, take advantage of this opportunity to look for and acquire knowledge that they previously lacked. To help them learn the information, the participants took the initiative to look up word definitions using an online dictionary program or using Google translate.

It was explained by student P2 as follows:

“Selama belajar online menggunakan e-learning, saya dipaksa untuk belajar secara mandiri, saya belajar memahami materi- materi pembelajaran yang diberikan oleh guru, ketika saya kurang memahami materi saya mencari penjelasan lain di google.64

“During online learning using e-learning, I was forced to study independently, I learned to understand the learning materials provided by the teacher when I did not understand the material I looked for other lessons on Google.”

The statement above was also strengthened by students P4 and P5 as follows:

“saya merasa seperti belajar secara mandiri, karena ketika saya tidak paham dengan penjelasan guru, saya langsung mencari materi lain di Internet.65

“I feel like I am being an independent learner because when I am did not understand the teacher's explanation, I directly find another material on the Internet.”

“Guru memberikan materi pembelajaran dalam bentuk Power Point dan juga video. Ketika saya masih kurang memahami materi yang diberikan oleh guru, saya langsung mencari penjelasan lain di google.66

“The teacher provides learning materials in the form of PowerPoint and videos. When I still don’t understand the material given by the teacher, I immediately look for another explanation on Google.”

In addition, the statement above was also strengthened by students P8 as follows:

“Selama belajar online, guru bahasa inggris jarang memberikan penjelasan secara detail. Jadi untuk mengerjakan tugas atau memahami materi yang diberikan oleh guru, saya biasanya mencari informasi lain di google.67

“During online learning, English teachers rarely provide detailed explanations. So to do assignments or understand the material given by the teacher, I usually look for other information on Google.”

The statement above was also supported by students 11P and 12P as follows:

“Karena masih dalam keadaan belajar secara online, mau gak mau saya harus belajar sendiri untuk memahami materi materi yang diberikan oleh guru.68

“Due to in a state of online learning, like it or not, I have to study independently to understand the material given by the teacher.”

“Kurangnya penjelasan dari guru yang berkenaan dengan materi pembelajaran, memaksa saya untuk belajar secara mandiri di rumah.69

“The lack of explanation from the teacher regarding the learning material forced me to study independently at home.”

It was supported by the teacher’s statement, as follows:

“Selama berlangsungnya proses pembelajaran secara online.

Saya selaku guru selalu mengingatkan para siswa untuk selalu belajar dan mengumpulkan tugas tepat waktu. Saya sudah mempersiapkan semua materi yang dibutuhkan siswa di E- Learning. Dan saya akui kekurangan E-Learning ini, kita tidak bisa berkomunikasi secara langsung. Hal ini yang menyebabkan banyak dari siswa kurang memahami materi yang diberikan.70

“During the online learning process, as a teacher, I always remind students to study and submit assignments on time. I have prepared all the materials that students need in E- Learning. I admitted that the lack of E-Learning is we cannot communicate directly. This is caused many of the students less understand the material given.”

Based on the statement above, it can be known that the EFL learners in process teaching and learning through E-Learning often look for additional learning material and use Google translate to help them understand the English material. Also, the EFL learners attempted that during online learning, the teacher does not give a detailed explanation as Offline School.

The statement above was strengthened by the observation that the researcher did. The researcher asked students to show the website that they used to browse the material. The students were mostly using

a blog website to look for the materials. Blog websites were used by the students, such as Brainly.com and so many websites that students used. The students explained to the researcher that the websites were provided the materials that they searched. The explanation about material from that website was easier to understand.71

Based on the interview and observation above, it can be concluded that in the teaching and learning process via online at tenth grade MAN 3 Jembrana, learning autonomously is one way EFL learners did to survive in the middle of this situation. Almost all participants used other platforms independently such as Google translate to dive into word meaning, in which some words may be difficult to comprehend. Then, they used various websites to seek other materials or references if they still did not understand the English material that given by their teacher.

c. Technology Adaptation

In English asynchronous e-learning, learners are required to use a specific application to aid in the learning process. These applications have already been discussed previously and chosen for a specific reason. The applications used by the participants are certainly based on the implementation of a learning management system as the medium of online communication.

“I often use WhatsApp to communicate with friends as well as teachers”

The statement above was also strengthened by students P2 and P3, as follows:

“Guru bahasa Inggris saya mengharuskan untuk menggunakan WhatsApp saja. Jadi saya dan teman-teman membuat grup khusus untuk mata pelajaran bahasa Inggris.73

“My English teacher requires using WhatsApp only. So my friends and I created a special WhatsApp group for English subjects.”

“Di mata pelajaran bahasa Inggris, Saya seringnya menggunakan WhatsApp untuk mengumpulkan tugas.74

“In English class, I often use WhatsApp to submit assignments”

In addition, the statements above were also strengthened by students P7 and P8, as follows:

“Dalam berkomunikasi dengan teman saya lebih sering dan intens menggunakan applikasi WhatsApp, dikarenakan sedikit menggunakan kuota.75

“In communicating with my friends, I use the WhatsApp application more often and intensely, because it uses a little quota.”

“Saya menggunakan WhatsApp dan e-learning dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris.76

“I use WhatsApp and asynchronous e-learning in learning English”

It was also supported by students P9, P12 and P14, as follows:

“Dalam proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris menggunakan e- learning, dalam berkomunikasi dengan guru ataupun dengan teman-teman, saya seringnya menggunakan WhatsApp.77

“In the process of learning English using e-learning, in communicating with teachers or with friends, I often use WhatsApp.”

“Kadang saya menggunakan WhatsApp untuk mengumpulkan tugas, seperti tugas setoran vocab yang berbentuk voice note.78

“Sometimes I use WhatsApp to submit the assignment, such as a vocab task in the form of a voice note.”

“Untuk interaksi dengan guru dan teman-teman kelas, saya biasan lebih cenderung menggunakan WhatsApp, dikarenakan lebih hemat kuota.79

“For interactions with teachers and classmates, I usually prefer to use WhatsApp, because it saves quota.”

From the explanation above, it can be known that the most of EFL Learners' experience in technology adaptation was intents used WhatsApp to the interaction between peer students, and between students-teacher. They assumed that WhatsApp is convenient to use and save quota internet

Based on the statements above, it was also supported by the teacher’s statement, as follows:

“Selama proses pembelajaran menggunakan e-learning ini, saya juga menggunakan WhatsApp untuk berinteraksi.

Dimana kita memiliki grup khusus untuk mata pelajaran bahasa Inggris. Grup ini sangat membantu dalam proses interakasi siswa, antara sesama siswa dan juga saya sabagai guru. Biasanya siswa akan menanyakan materi yang mereka belum pahami melalui grup kelas ini.80

“During the learning process through e-learning, I used WhatsApp to interact. We have a special group for English subjects. This group is very helpful in the process of student interaction, between fellow students and also me as a teacher. Usually, students will ask about material that they do not understand through this class group.”

The statement above was strengthened by the observation that the researcher did. The researcher asked students to show how EFL learners interact with their peer students. They showed the researcher that they have special group discussions without a teacher in them. The EFL learners explained to the researcher that they were mostly discussing anything in their special group and being intense discussion when they have an assignment. Then, to the interaction between teacher and students, the EFL learners explained to the researcher that they were intense in sharing information in their English group. When the teacher gives an assignment in E-learning, and EFL learners still do not understand the assignment, the EFL learners actively asked the teacher about the assignment through WhatsApp.81

Based on the interview and observation above, it can be concluded that most of the EFL learners’ participants at Tenth grade of MAN 3 Jembrana applied E-learning and WhatsApp. In the English
