CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

B. Some Pertinent Ideas

3. Google Classroom

English is very important because more aspects of life used English, such as in education, work, and communication in daily life.

English is the second language that used to communicate. So, people and students have to learn English. In this era, learning English is facilitated by innovation of technology. Students can learn interactively in various media such as smartphone, computer, and also students can learn everywhere and everytime.

Learning English become easy because there are some media that can be easily used to learn English. Google Classroom is one of media that teachers use in teaching English. It was designed to facilitate teacher and students interaction. Teacher give the subject matter and assignment to student.

Teacher can open an online discussion room. Discussion room design by teacher and member of the discussion room are members of the real class. According to Asnawi (2018) Google Classroom designed to help teacher to create and collect assignment without using paper and save time like the ability to copy assignment file automatically for each students. It is prove that Google Classroom is eco-friendly because using Google Classroom on assignment help student to learn and do their assignment without wasting paper. In detail, Google Classroom become a

tool distribution of assignment, collecting assignment, and grading assignment. Teacher do not worry about abuse of students on assignment because Google Classroom give teacher access to organize the assignment and student only see and edit their assignment.

In addition as a distribution of assignment, teacher can share learning material in discussion room. If in learning process in the real class did not finish, teacher can continue the learning process in discussion room of Google Classroom. Rozak and Albantani (2018) said that teacher will share their idea and their knowledge to discuss in Google Classroom in discussion forum of Google Classroom. Teacher share material of learning and students will download the material from teacher.

Using Google Classroom in learning process as distribution of assignment and forum discussion, it can be easy to student to do their assignment, this application make good communication between teacher and student, and also make students more active in learning process.

There are some the advantages and disadvantages of using Google Classroom in learning process. According Papas in Putri (2017) there are some the advantages and disadvantages of Google Classroom, as follows:

a. The Advantages of Google Classroom 1. Easy to use and accessible from all devices

Easily using Google Classroom from chrome browser, all computers, mobile phones, and tablets.

2. Effective communication and sharing

One of the greatest advantages of Google Classroom is Google Docs, these documents are saved online and share with a limitless number of people, we can create an announcement or assignment using Google docs, students can access it immediately through their Google drive, as long as teacher has shared it with students.

3. Speeds up the assignment process

Assignment process has never been quicker and more effective, as in Google Classroom you can easily check who has submitted their assignment and who is still working on it, as well as students feedback immediately

4. Effective feedback

Speaking of feedback, Google Classroom gives you the opportunity to offer your online support to your learners right away, means that feedback becomes more effective as fresh comments and remarks have bigger impact on learners minds.

5. No need for paper

By centralizing e-learning materials in one cloud-based location, students and teachers have the ability to go paperless and stop worrying about printing, handing out, or even losing their work.

6. Clean and user friendly interface

Staying loyal to clean Google layout standards, Google Classroom invites teacher and student to an environment where every single design detail is simple, intuitive, and user friendly.

7. Great commenting system

Students can comment on specific locations within pictures for a variety of online courses. Futhermore, teacher and student can create URLs for interesting comments and using them for online discussion forums.

8. Is for everyone

Teachers can also join Google Classroom as students, which means that teachers can create a Google Classroom for themself and their colleagues and use it for faculty meetings, information sharing or professional development.

b. The Disadvantages of Google Classroom 1. Diffiult account management

Google Classroom does not allow access from multiple domains.

2. No automated updates

Activity feed does not update automatically, so students will need to refresh regilarly in order not to miss important announcements.

3. Difficult students sharing

Students can not share their work with their peers, unless they become “owners” of a document and even they will need to

approve sharing options, which will create a chao if they want to share a document with their classmates.

4. Editing problems

Teacher create an assignment and distribute it to student, teacher become “owners” of the document and they are allow to edit it.

That means that they can delet any part of the assignment they want, whoch could cause problem, even if it happens accidentally.

5. No automated quizzes and test

One of the main reason that Google Classroom can not yet fully replace learning management system is that it does not provide automated quizzes and tests for students. In general, Google Classroom is more suitable for a blended learning experience than a fully online program.

The researcher choose the sample in this research was 30 students of C Class of 2016 English Education Department because C Class active to use Google Classroom in learning.

C. Research Instrument

The research instruments used for data collection was questionnaire.

According to Sugiyono (2017) questionnaire is a data collection technique that is done by giving a set of questions or written questions to the respondents to answer. In this research, the researcher distibuted questionnaire directly to respondents. The questionnaire was used to measure the students perception on the use of Google Classroom in langauge learning.

D. Data Collection Technique

In collected the data, the researcher applied questionnaire by doing these following procedures.

1. The researcher used questionnaire and questions are direct to the students perception on the use of Google Classroom in language learning.

2. The researcher gave the explanation to the students about the purpose of the questionnaires and how to answer the questionnaire.

3. The researcher inform the objectives of the questionnaire after distributing to the students.

4. The students answer the questionnaire in the answer sheet and they had 30 minutes to anwer the questionnaire.

5. After collecting the data, the researcher classified and analyzed the data from the students.

E. Data Analysis Technique

The researcher used the formula from Wahyuni et. al (2016) to measured and analyzed the questionnaire.

P =

Which:

P : Percentage F : Frequency

N : Number of sample 100 % : Constant value

(Wahyuni et.al , 2016)

The researcher was describe the data and also the percentage of data.

It is to make the result of the research clear and readable.

B. Discussion

In this section, the result of the data collected and analysis discuss to describe students perception on the use of Google Classroom in language learning. The description of the data collected from the result of the students response to the acceptance of easiness of Google Classroom was agree and students response to performance of Google Classroom was agree. Based on the findings above, the use of Google Classroom have a good response from students.

1. Students Acceptance of Easiness of Google Classroom

Perceived ease of use, in contrast refers to the degree to which a person believes that using a particular system would be free of effort, this follows from the definition of ease: freedom from difficulty of great effort, David (1989). Based on the research of Cech and Bures (2004) state that implementation of e-learning can be hindered with countless problem. The problems can be derived from the three basic elements in every organization, these elements are people, processes, and the technology. In this case people related to students abilities, students and teacher behaviour and teacher motivation in using Google Classroom.

The process is related to the implementation of Google Classroom in conducting language learning and technology related to the selection of system and means for their use.

The result of data analysis for students acceptance of the easiness of Google Classroom were obtained on most of students agreed with the easiness of Google Classroom in language learning. It means that from the questions about the students acceptance of easiness of Google Classroom in language learning in the questionnaire, students was agree and get of good respond about that. Google Classroom is easy to use for students because students can access faster material, assignment and important announcement from Google Classroom that can be accessed via website or smartphone by students. It is related with the reserach of Shaharanee, et. al (2016) state that Google Classroom makes the process

of submitting assignment easier, the students get the feedback from teacher, and could be easily contact the teacher used Google Classroom.

Students also easy to learn because they can access Google Classroom anywhere, so students are interested and happy to learn language.

Students interest in learning cause students easy to understand learning material. It is related with the research of Utami (2019) state that Google Classroom is easy to use both in terms of student behavior in use Google Classroom, implementation of Google Classroom in learning and the availability of infrastructure to use Google Classroom.

2. Performance of Google Classroom

According to Venkatesh et. al in Vermaut (2016) state that performance expectancy is the degree to which an individual or user expects that by using the system can help gain profit or ease in working.

Performance is related to the appearance, workings and facilities provided by the Google Classroom for users. So, the performance of Google Classroom can make it easier for students to carry out the language learning process.

The result of data analysis for performance of Google Classroom were obtained on most of students agreed with performance of Google Classroom in language learning. It means that from the 9 questions about the performance of Google Classroom in questionnaire, students was agree with performance of Google Classroom and get good respond from students. Performance of Google Classroom supporting language
