a. Whereas two of the Kiwanis Objectives for 1960 are:

"Developing individual Citizenship responsibility"

"Organize and support effective program for Senior Citizens"

- 7 -

And inasmuch as statistics show that there has been a tremendous increase in the middle age and older population in the United States in the last ten years; ·

And we are also aware of the many and complex problems that have arisen around aging; and we also recognize that the primary respon- sibility for action lies with the individual citizens and local community;

And since Kiwanis International has indicated an interest in helping solve these problems, therefore, we the Kentucky-Tennessee District of Kiwanis recommend to Kiwanis International that a National Com- mittee on Aging be established to give guidance and direction to Districts and local Kiwanis Clubs.

b. WHEREAS, the address given by Dr. George Benson, President, Hardin College, Searcy, Arkansas, delivered to the 42ND ANNUAL CONVENTION of the Kentucky-Tennessee District, KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL, held in Nashville, Tennessee, on September 25, 26 and 27, 1960 was of such timely importance and of great benefit to all who heard it and in our opinion worthy of wide consideration, -·

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the District Convention go on record as requesting that KIWANIS INTERJ.\TATIONAL obtain a transcript of this marvelous address and distribute

it

to all KIWANIS Clubs with the

request that it be read at some KIWANIS meeting before the end of 1960 so that as many KIWANI.ANS and others as possible may be advised of the gravity of the world situation and thereby become more alert, not only to our extreme danger but also to our wonderful opportunity to help preserve Freedom on Earth.

c. WHEREAS, our great leaders in the past have sought God's guidance and inspiration in determining our Nation's course and this guidance has preserved us as a nation; and

WHEREAS, the complexity and seriousness of the problems confronting our leaders today finds them seeking Strength and Wisdom for the inspiration of their decisions; and

WHEREAS, there now exists no place of prayer or meditation in our respective State Capitol buildings for the benefit of our representa- tives and leaders;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Kentucky-Tennessee District of Kiwanis International consider as an Objective for 1961 the es- tablishment of a room for prayer and meditation in each of our State Capitol buildings of Kentucky and Tennessee and that our Support of Churches Committees, our officers and Kiwanis members throughout the District promote, encourage, and assist in the fulfillment of this objective ..

d. WHEREAS, KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL has deemed it wise to allow the office of President-elect to be created in a Kiwanis Club, and

WHEREAS, each year the Lieutenant Governor of our Districts go into

office often withouth much training or preparation;

- 8 -

THEREFORE, the Advisory Council of Past Lieutenant Governors of Division Six of our Kentucky-Tennessee District of Kiwanis International recom- mends that a resolutj.on be submitted to the Board of Directors of Kiwanis International to allow any District to create the office of Lieutenant Governor-Elect so that the Lieutenant Governor-Elect can have at least a year of preparation for the job as Lieutenant Governor the following years.

7,. Louisiana-M~issippi-West Tennessee

a. This convention calls to the attention of all Kiwanians of this District that one of the most serious administrative problems confronting our clubs and throughout International, is that of membership deletion.

It is apparent to those in position of leadership that the principal reason for many of the deletions is a lack of understanding of the basic principles and activities of Kiwanis,

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Louisiana~Mississippi-West

Tennessee District, in Convention assembled, that the Presidents of all clubs of this District be urged to emphasize the necessity for thorough indoctrination and education of new members and, from time to time, the re-education and rededication of the older members, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that greater emphasis be placed upon the prepara- tion and planning of weekly programs whereby all Kj.wanians throughout this D:tstrict may be ever reminded of their obligations of Kiwanis serv- ice, which we submit is the most essential ingredient of a successful Kiwanis Club.

b. We believe that in our young people lies our greatest resource, as exemplified by the messages of John Gartrell.,Key Club District Governor, Meridian High School, Meridian, Mississiwi, James M. Whitehead., Circle K District Governor, Southeastern Louisiana College, Hammond, Louisiana, and Miss Maria Tarczanin, Perkinston Junior College, Perkinston,

Mississippi, naturalized .American citizen, native of Russian Ukraine.

In them is found our richest opportunity to preserve for generations to come the principles upon which our Freedoms are founded. They will

provide the energies and the materials upon which tomorrow will be built.

They will chart the course for those who follow.

Ours is both a material and a spiritual responsibility which is individ- ual to each of us. We recognize the- obligation, as well as the satis- faction which follows personal participation in wholesome youth activi- ties. We are dedicated to the positive task of giving the youth of

today a chance to grow in body, mind and spirit; a chance to stay normal, to find a life that is rewarding and responsible.

Kiwanis has done great works through the years under its Youth Services programs. Kiwanians and Kiwanis clubs have been in the front ranks of those rendering service to the normal and assistance to the less

forttmate. The ever increasing numbers in our youth population and the

multiplication of the problems which adult complacency has allowed to

remain unsolved call for even greater accomplishments.

- 9 -

THEREFORE, BE IT NOW RESOLVED, that each club of the Louisiana-

Mississippi-West Tennessee District of Kiwanis International and every member thereof is called upon to recognize the importance of personal interest and participation in our Key Club and Circle K movements so that they may be expanded.and may continue to grow in scope and influ- ence; that all due cooperation be extended to established youth programs in our communities; that there exists the need to initiate new and addi- tional youth activities in accord with the varying opportunities and problems within our respective communities; that we align ourselves against adult inertia and exert our positive thinking and actions toward the end that our young people may

be

enabled to enjoy

a

good life while recognizing within themselves the responsibility of the individual.

THUS RESOLVED, by the Louisiana-Mississippi-West Tennessee District of Kiwanis International in regul.ar convention assembled.
