3. NEW SUPPLIES ITEMS

At each meetlng of our committee we give serious consideration to new items that :might be added to our catalog line, in order that we might better serve the needs of the clubs and memberso

- 3 -

The following it.ems were considered:

A. Mini.ature Gong T,ro:phy - for Past Officers

The miniature.gong that you now see in front of the President is the type of

a

trophy that we feel will ~ppeal to Past Officers. There is sufficient space to engrave, the name, offices held and the years served. The trophy would sell for

$12.00 plus engraving at 10¢ per letter. A miniature gavel will be offered for those who would like one at an, additional cost of approximately

$2.

00. Twenty- five (25) would need to be stocked, increasing Inventory by $175.00.

B. Miniature Bell - Paper Weight

Along much the same line we have a miniature bell - paper weight which can be used, as a favor at official K;iwanis functions.

These mi.niature bells w:i.11 sell for

$1.

50 each and less- in q_uanti ty lots.

It would be necessary t:o stock one hundred (100) which .. would increase the

!nventbry by $90.00.

C.

School Safety Patrol Equipment

A complete line of School Safety Patrol equipment is available to us on a drop- shipment basis, wi.th

a

reasonable mark-up to.- make it worthwhile

as an.

item to back .up our Kiwanis safety Patrol program.

The manufactur·er wi.11 make a four· page brochure available to us · at no cost to Ki~1mnis International.

Special Kiwan:Ls Safety Pat.rol emblems for the raincoats will be designed by the manufacturer for use on all of our orde;rs.

D.

Convent.ion Charm

Now that the Supplies PerI>artment is featuri,ng Qharm Bracelets it is suggested that a charm be cr~ated ~ach year for sa.le at the Convention. The charm would be of a d.esign related to the Convention city. For example: in Toronto the

cha;rm could be a Maple Leaf or· Canadian Goat-of-a.x'Ill.s with engraving on the back, similar to this year1s Counc11 charm.

E. Ladies Brooch

In

1958

the Ladies Bowknot. Pin 'Was a;~,ded. to the Supplies Catalog line. From that time to thts date we haw:: sold 3., 329 pins.

is the feeling o.f the Comnrittee that we need. to add another pin or brooch at t:i.is ·wh:lc.h ·"'ri.11 sell for approx:t:mately

$1.

50 each and less in quan- tity 1.::-rts o

The design that we have in mind is a fleur-d.e-lis with the Kiwanis emblem in the center in a. gold fin:ish.

HOA® COMMITrEE MEETING

The members of the Board Committee on Properties and Supplies feel that the matters :pertaining to the operation of the Kiwanis International Building and the Supplies Depa:r-tment are much too important to try to cover in a two hour meeting.

It is the feeling of this committee that we should come in a day early in the future and allow as much time as the schedule on that day would allow.

Supplies operations will go over the

$500.,

000.CO a year figure in 1961. An operation of this scope requires more than two hours of a committee., four times a year, and we should provide for adequate time. It will not cost Kiwanis Interna- tional - instead it wi.11 pay Kiwanis International to fqllow such a plan.

5 • ADDIT,ION OJ? ''ACTIVITY PROMQ~ION MATERIAL" to C;atalog Line

The Committee expressed their desire to be notified in advance on all new trActivity Promotional Materialn· planned to be added

to

our Supplies line., for which an Inven- tory is necessary.

It is the responsibility of the Board Committee on Properties and Supplies to see that thq Inventory is in line with the operations of the department. Likewise., they would like to be counse.led in advance of new promotions where this department would be affected.a

Tb.is request is in no way

to

be construed that Activity promotions will need to be approved by the Suppliee. Co:mmi tte~. QU.ite the contrary., the concern of this com- mittee is

the

effect on the Inventory necessary to promote such activities.

The Committee :eecommend.s that:

1. A sofa be purchased for the Ladies B,est Room on the Lower Level at

a

cost of $135.00.

I :move that. rec:o:mmsndation 1 be adopted 2. A $now Plow 'be purcha:.sed at a cost of

$517

.00

I :move that recommendation 2 be ~dopted

3.

The committee reviewed the program for the Council meeting opening Sunday and is satisfied with ito Every year the members of the Board of Trustees observe the functioning of the International Council and after it is over make their comments .and suggestions. The program this year contains several innovations which the committee feels are desirable .. In observing the Council and making comme':rits:, the members of the Board of Trustees are urged to study the innova- tions and direct their comments and suggestions to these innovations .

The committee also calls attention to the new format of the leadership training outlines which it feels will add considerably to the understanding and use of these outlines by district and club officers.

.An opportunity has been presented to make movies of the high spots of the Council meeting at no expense to Kiwanis International. The committee has accepted this offer and during the Council these motion pictures will be taken.

No attempt will be made to secure a sound track but Conference Room 1 on the lower floor of the General Office will be used for the making of sound pictures which will include abbreviated presentations of the principal addresses by Board members. The fibn will be made available to the Board of Trustees, if desired, and without cost.

The committee recommends thatx

REPORT OF BOARD COMMITTEE ON

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS TO THE MEETING ON OCTOBER 28z_

1960

OF

THE INTERNATIONAL BOARD OF TRUSTEES DATE OF COMMITTEE MEETING: October 28,

1960

PLACE OF COMMITTEE MEETING: General Office, Chicago

Exhibit

#9

PRESENT: Members - Ernest G. Bashor, W. Clyde Glass, Edward B. Moylan, Jr .. , Mel R. Osborne

Chairman - J.C. Robertson

Staff Members - L.A. Hapgood, Percy Shue

The committee first considered the definition covering the scope of the commit- tee's functioning. The decision on this will be included in the recommendations.

A composite of the

1961

International Relations emphases in the International committee programs was reviewed showing several items in Agriculture and Con- servation, Boys and Girls Work, both Public and Business .Affairs Committees, Support of Churches in Their Spiritual Aims as well as Key Clubs and Circle K.

The committee also discussed the possible transfer of the international aspects of the individual committees' programs when an International Committee on Inter- national Relations is formed. Your committee also wishes to commend the

1961

Committees for putting as many individual programs on international relations in their suggestions to clubs as is evident for the coming year.

Following a review of an editorial in the Toronto Star Weekly on the importance of inviting students from other countries to study in United States and Canada, it was suggested that this committee be authorized to promote such a project to be carried out by local Kiwanis clubs and that the purpose of this project be to offer education on the ideals and goals of a democratic society.

A letter has been received from Consultants for Overseas Relations, Inc., an- nouncing a meeting at Princeton University on November

11

and 12. It was felt important to seek approval to have Kiwanis represented and that the President be asked to name a representative.

Your committee feels that each club should be encouraged to carry out at least one project in International relations during

1961,

exclusive of the emphasis put upon c·anada-U.S .. Good Will Week.

It is the feeling of the Committee that it would like to have the reactions of each Board member on the Academy of Peace Program since aspects of this come within the functioning of this committeee It is re~uested that such comments be forwarded to the Chairman with a copy to the General Office.

- 2 .,.,

Your committee approves in .principle the Kiwanis Fellows for World Freedom and Friendship Project and awaits with interest the reaction of the Board Commit- tee on. the Kiwanis Foundation.

The committee recommends that:

1. The 1961 International Committees be commended for including such a variety of International Relations projects in their suggestions for the coming year.

I move that recommendation 1 be adopted.

2. The committee continue to study and collate materials on student exchange programs of various types with the view of presenting to the Board and Kiwanis Foundation definite projects in that area once Kiwanis Foundation, Inc. has decided upon a device to obtain money to finance the project.

I move that recommendation 2 be adopted.

3.

The President be asked to appoint a Kiwanis representative to be present at the conference at Princeton University on November 11 and 12, as called by the Consultants for Overseas Relations, Inc.

I move that recommendation 3 be adopted.

4.

Each club be encouraged to carry out at least one international relations project during 1961 over and beyond their efforts as related to Canada-U.S$

Good Will Week.

I move that recommendation

4

be adopted.

5.

Each member of the Board be asked to comment on the Academy of Peace Project so that the committee may review possible future action to be taken since at least some aspects of this project seem to fall within the scope of the work of this Board Committee.

I move that recommendation

5

be adopted.

6.

The Kiwanis Fellows for World Freedom and Friendship project be approved in principle.

I move that recommendation 6 be adopted.

7.

The definition of the scope of this Board Committee be as follows:

To recommend to the International Board of Trustees methods and programs to implement the goals relating to international relations, particularly the promotion of peace through the rule of law in world affairs, the development of friendship between nations and the increase of understand- ing by residents of one country of the way of life, problems and aspira- tions of the peoples of other nations.

... 3 -

To appraise current, programs involving Oanada ... United States relations to the end that these bonds may be further strengthened and this type of interna- tional understanding :and friendship be utilized as a dramatic example of good international relations.

I

move that r~commendation

7

be adopted.

I

move this report be received.
