REPORT OF CONFERENCE OF NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS Miami Beach, Florida ~ October 2 7-29, 19 71

It was indeed a pleasure to represent Kiwanis International at the 77th Session of the Conference of National Organizations held at the Hotel Fontainebleau, Miami Beach, Florida, October 27=29, 19710 I am indeed sorry that unexpected commitments prevented Secretary Emeritus, OoEo "P:ete" Peterson's attendance. It was a pleasure to have Past President Ed and Eleanor Moylan attend the reception on the 27th, The Conference concerned itself with "Education of Whom, For What?" It was not covered by the news media in accordance with its own rules. The HEW Secretary was represented by a member of his staff who took notes during the entire Conference and who will make a total report to the Secretary, The speakers and panelists were well informed on their re spec.ti ve subjects and only the coffee breaks and evening

receptions were able to be utilized for many questions and answerso There was a great deal of discussion of a change in format that will enable a more positive input by the member organizations.

Dr. James Do Koerner, Program Officer for the Alfred Po Sloan Foundation presented the views of the Foundation and set forth that the problem existing from the Foun- dation's standpoint. was that too many classes and subjects were available with too few students per class; that too many members of the faculties on the college and university level spent too few hours in the classroom and too much of their time writing, publishing and participating in outside activities and that administrators and college trustees had delegated too much power and control to the faculty" He further set forth that faculty power then went to government, big enterprise and foundations for studies and seminars, that in many instances had little relation to the problems of government, big enterprise and foundations. He also stated that government might well have to take care of the financial problems of the colleges unless more colleges concerned themsel'~rns with the 'pay as you go' methods"

Dr. Ivar Berg, Associate Dean of Faculty and Professor of Business Administration for Columbia University Graduate School oi Business, set forth that economic. growth in our country had caused larger colleges, new colleges, and more classes" He said that to the individual students, education meant: higher income as a result of em- ployers, both private and government, having built-in factors that favored college graduates although there is a great difference in the income of the graduate of a junior college when compared to a four=year college or university. He suggested in job classifications that there should be more breakdowns as to the need of educa~

tional requirements; that higher salaries should require better productivity, and that in many instance.s people with degrees did not do as well in their vocation as their counter=parts with less formal education. He also believes that many of our citizens have come to expect too much from education and educators as a unit. In the discussion following these speakers it: was pointed out by several persons that there is a great need for educators to teach how to study and how to learn; and that education tried to be all things to all people; that educators ought to define their goals, roles and responsibilities; and that government, big enterprise and founda- tions should not necessarily set the pace or all of the credentials for education but should play an important role in its planning"

Dru Derek Nunney, Vice=President of Instruction of Oakland Community College, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, brought out the fact that colleges should become more success oriented instead of failure oriented, and that when students fail, colleges fail. He also set forth that their college was utilizing what they considered a new method of combining lectures, films and tapes in the same course or subject at
