RESEARCH METHOD

A. Research Design

This research was a descriptive qualitative research due to the researcher would like to analyze about the students’ perception towards the effectiveness of public speaking subject by journalistic learning project. The aim of choosing public speaking subject was to find out the effectiveness of public speaking by journalistic learning project.

B. Research Variable and indicator

The indicator of this research was the student’s perceptions toward the effectiveness of public speaking subject by journalistic learning project to support students’ speaking skill.

C. Research Subject

The subject of this research were 21 students from the seventh semester at English Education Departement from Makassar Muhammadiyah of University in academic 2019/2020.

D. Research instrument

The instrument of this study, the researcher used questionnaire to collected the data. The questionnaire consisted of 15 number related to know the students’ perceptions toward the effectiveness of public speaking subject by journalistic learning project.

E. Data collection

For data collection, the researcher used questionnaire in this study. The researcher gave the questionnaire to the students consist of 15 open-ended questions, then the researcher gave 35 minutes to the students to answer the questions based on their own thinking. In gathering the data, the researcher planned :

1. The researcher gave questionnaire to the students of the research.

2. The researcher collected the data.

3. The researcher was analyzed the data.

4. The researcher classified the answer of the students based on the questions.

5. The researcher made conclusions.

F. Techniques of data analysis

There were some procedures to gather the data analysis that used questionnaire

The researcher collected the data to be analyze then classify the answer by the questionnaire. The researcher used some formulates arrange the study in questionnaire.instrument research was used likert scale to make in the form of checklist. The checklist was gave on the available column and the statement is in accordance with the alternative subject state the answer use is strongly Agree (SA), Agree (A), Undecided (U), Disagree (D), and Strongly Disagree (SD).

Total the score base on the response category :

After the researcher administrated the fulfillment the questionnaire, the researcher counted the total answer for each answer category which existed in each aspect. Then, the data obtain from the questionnaires analysis by using the percentage technique.

F= The frequency of items N= Total respondent

(Sugiyono, 2012) P = x 100%

CHAPTER IV

FINDING AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents the findings of the research and discussion about the findings. They are follows :

A. Findings

In this chapter, the results of the study are presented. The chapter was divided into two main sections. The first section presents the data of followed by findings on each statement aspects to answer research questions about the students’ perceptions toward the effectiveness of public speaking subject to support their speaking skill, focusing on the strategies used by the lecturers.

Based on the table 4.1 above, percentages of data showed that there were 21 students responds, there were 14 students or 66,6% from the total number of the students whose strongly agree with the statement. The other 7 students or 33,3

% from the total number of the students agree with the statement. And none of the

student’s whose answered undicated,disagree and strongly disagree with the statement. In brief, The students’ perceived toward Journalistic learning project succeeded to support public speaking subject.

Based on the table 4.2 above, percentages of data showed that there were 21student’s responds, there were 8 students or 38,0% from the total number of the student’s whose strongly agree with the statement. The other 10 students or 47,6

% from the total number of the students agree with the statement. Meanwhile, there were 43 students or 14,2% from the total number of the students answered undecided with the statement. None of the student’s whose answered disagree and strongly disagree with the statement. The result show that mostly students’

perceived that Journalistic learning project in public speaking subject were interesting and motivating.

Based on the table 4.3 above, percentages of data showed that there were 21 students responds, there were 11 students or 52,3% from the total number of the students whose strongly agree with the statement. The other 9 students or 42,8% from the total number of the students agree with the statement. Meanwhile, there were 1 students or 4,7% from the total number of the students answered undecided with the statement. None student’s answered disagree and strongly disagree with the statement. In brief, Journalistic Learning Project that used in Public Speaking Subject were fun.

Based on the table 4.4 above, percentages of data showed that there were 21 students responds, there were 9 students or 42,8 % from the total number of the students whose strongly agree with the statement. The other 12 students or 57,1 % from the total number of the students agree with the statement. None of the student’s whose answered Undicated, disagree and strongly disagree with the statement. On the whole Jouirnalistic Project made the students to be chritism in public speaking subject.

Based on the table 4.5 above, percentages of data showed that there were 21 students’ responds, and there were none students answered strongly agree and agree with the statement. Meanwhile, there were 3 students or 14,2% from the total number of the students answered undecided with the statement.14 students or 66,6 % answered disagree with the statement. And there were 4 or 19,0 % students whose answered strongly disagree with the statement. The result showed of student’s perceived that journalistic learning project are able to influence students’ vocabulary to be better.

Based on the table 4.6 above, percentages of data showed that there were 21 students’ responds, and there were none students answered strongly agree, agree and undecided with the statement. Meanwhile, there were 6 students or 28,5% from the total number of the students answered disagree with the statement. 15 students or 71,42% answered strongly disagree with the statement.

The student’s perceived that outomatically journalistic learning gave a nice experience in innovating in learning proccess.

Based on the table 4.7 above, percentages of data showed that there were 21 students responds, there were 15 students or 71,42% from the total number of the students whose strongly agree with the statement. The other 6 students or 28,57 % from the total number of the students agree with the statement. None of the student’s whose answered undecided, disagree and strongly disagree with the statement. In brief the students’ perceived that they were more confidence to be a good public speaker.

Based on the table 4.8 above, percentages of data showed that there were 21 students’ responds, and there were none students answered strongly agree, agree and undecided with the statement. Meanwhile, there were 10 students or 47,6% from the total number of the students answered disagree with the statement. 11 students or 52,3% answered strongly disagree with the statement.

The student’s perceived that they more understand public speaking by practicing.

Based on the table 4.9 above, percentages of data showed that there were 21 students’ responds, and there were none students answered strongly agree and agree with the statement. Meanwhile, there were 1 students or 4,7% from the total number of the students answered undecided with the statement. 6students or 28,5

% answered disagree with the statement. And there were 14 or 66,6 % students whose answered strongly disagree with the statement. In brief, The students’

perceived toward Public Speaking Subject by journalistic learning project was effective in speaking class.

In brief, Journalistic project that used can open up horisons and solving problems for students in public speaking subject.

The other 8 students or 38,0 % from the total number of the students agree with the statement. Meanwhile, there were 5 students or 23,8% from the total number of the students answered undecided with the statement. None students’s answered disagree and strongly disagree with the statement. It means that students’ perceived toward Public Speaking Subject make their pronountation smooth by journalistic project.

Andthere were 6students or 28,5% from the total number of the students whose agree with the statement. The other 6 students or 28,5% from the total number of the students undecided with the statement. Meanwhile, there were 6 students or 42,8% from the total number of the students answered agreewith the statement.

None student’s answered strongly disagree with the statement. In brief, students’

grammaticalsentences were not maximal in Public speaking subject by journalistic project.

Meanwhile, there were 1 students or 4,7% from the total number of the students answered undecided with the statement. None of the student’s whose answered disagree and strongly disagree with the statement. The students’ perceived that journalistic project are able to encourage their activeness as public speaker.

from the total number of the students agree with the statement. And None of the student’s whose answered undicated, disagree, and strongly disagree with the statement. So the result showed that the students’ perceived toward journalistic learning project in public speaking subject would gave a new knowledge to improve their speaking skill.

B. Discussion

The discussion of the research detects to give the questionnaire the researcher collect the data to be analysis then classify the answer by the questionnaire. The scale used in this research is Likert scale. Likert Scale use to measure attitudes, opinions, and perceptions of a person or group of people about

social phenomena. Likert scale a graduation from very positive to very negative (Sugiono, 013)

The data from questionnaire showed that mostly students’ perceived that the succuss supported of journalistic learning project in public speaking. The previous finding research showed thatAbdul, Nurdevi Bte (2016) in her journal with the title, Broadcasting video project to promote student’s motivation in speaking skill, the paper evaluates and state that Teaching and learning English is not only about preparing the interesting material, but is should be supported by interesting activity or technique to promote students’ skills based on their needs.

Furthermore, the students argued that Public journalistic Learning project in public speaking subject that was effective in speaking class. The previous finding research showed that Nasser Omer (2014) on the study entitles public speaking instruction; the second question sought to find out the effect of psychic faculties (PSI) on reducing students’ communication apprehension. Findings support the effectiveness of public speaking instruction in reducing students’

communication apprehension.

Based on the questionnaire showed that thebased on the questionnaire showed students’ perceived thatstudents’ perceived toward journalistic learning project in public speaking subject would gave a new knowledge to improve their speaking skill. It is related to Xuying (2013) on his thesis entitle Peer Assessment of Perception and Attitudes in Public Speaking English Classes found that participating students hold positive attitudes toward the use of peer assessment(PA) activities, but there remain some problems or doubts, such as the

percentage of peer assessment being counted towards the total course grade, the validity and reliability of peer assesment (PA), and so on. Certain solutions are discussed in this article. In the conclusion section, the author proposes future study on whether peer assessment (PA) exerts positive influences on enhancing students’ competence in English public speaking.

In summary, the effectiveness of Journalistic Learning Project in public speaking subject at Seventh Semester Students of English Departement Makassar Muhammadiyah of University that success to support their speaking skill and make the students more chritism and confidence in the class and also improving their their prounountation and vocabulary to be better, then their felt easly to communicate because their argued journalistic learning project in public speaking subject were really fun and interesting. And it is important that the effectiveness of journalistic learning project in public speaking would gave a new knowledge to improve their speaking skill. And JournalisticProject in public speaking subject can be a source study that effective to students’ motivation in speaking skill.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

This chapter consists of two parts. The first presents some conclusions based on the data analysis. The second part present some suggestions based on the findings and conclusion of this research.

A. Conclusion

Based on the findings and discussion, it can be concluded that the respondents of this research gave their positive perception toward the effectiveness ofjournalistic learning project in public speaking. Furthermore, the showed from the finding of journalistic learning project in public speaking were succeded to so support their speaking skill,made the students to be critism, gave a nice experience, they more confidence, they more understand by practicing, gave a new knowledge, effective, this method were fun, open up horisons and solving problem for students,activeness,make them to be disicipline, intresting and motivating, vocabulary to be better, their pronountation be smooth and although gramatical sentences were not maximal.

The positive judgement from the respondents comes not only from the students’ statement agreement and the aspects in the research questionnaire but also from the advantages which they got while the implementation of journalistic learning projectin public speaking subject to improve their speaking skill. They claimed that they have got many benefits of journalistic learning project in public speakingto improve their speaking skill in practicing speaking.

Nevertheless, students still need their lecturer during in learning process.

Lecturer was needed by the students in order to get some instruction, correction, motivation etc.

B. Suggestion

Based on the result of the data analysis and conclusion, the researcher suggests as follows:

1. For the Lecturer

The lecturers should decrease problem appears in implementing of journalistic learning project in public speaking subject in order to improve its benefits to improve students’ language skill in term of practicing speaking and their performances in public speaking.

2. For the Students

The implementation of journalistic learning project can be useful for the students to improve their speaking skill and the applied this method the students also also are able to support their speaking skill.

3. For the researcher

The applied ofJournalistic learning project should not only be used in public speaking subject, but also be implemented toward others subjects of English Education Department to improve their speaking skill. So this research can be a reference for the next researcher to develop this method later.
