Winds a r e d o m i n a t e d b y t h e N o r t h e a s t T r a d e s . About 7 1 p e r c e n t o f o b s e r v a t i o n s a r e i n t h e s e c t o r s 030-090°. T h i s dominance i s m o s t

marked d u r i n g t h e w i n t e r ; i n t h e summer, s o u t h e a s t e r l i e s may o c c u r . On o c c a s i o n d u r i n g t h e w i n t e r months ' N o r t h w e s t e r s ' o f s e v e r a l d a y s ' d u r a t i o n b r i n g s t o r m y w e a t h e r , r a i n f a l l , and r e d u c e d t e m p e r a t u r e s , w i t h n o r t h a n d n o r t h w e s t e r l y w i n d s commonly r e a c h i n g 1 3 m/sec ( 2 5 k n o t s ) . Modal wind s p e e d s d u r i n g normal c o n d i t i o n s a r e a p p r o x i m a t e l y 5m/sec

The Cayman I s l a n d s l i e w i t h i n t h e zone o f c a t a s t r o p h i c h u r r i c a n e s . T h e r e a r e few r e c o r d s o f t h e i r o c c u r r e n c e a t L i t t l e C a p a n i t s e l f , b u t more t h a n 40 h a v e b e e n r e c o r d e d i n t h e g r o u p s i n c e 1751 ( W i l l i a m s 1970;

Woodroffe, i n l i t t . ) . The v a r i a b l e f r e q u e n c y o v e r t h i s p e r i o d i s o n l y p a r t l y a t t r i b u t a b l e t o g a p s i n t h e h i s t o r i c a l r e c o r d , and i t a p p e a r s t h a t s t o r m s were most n u n e r o u s d u r i n g 1895-1903, 1909-1917, and 1932- 1 9 4 4 . From t h e r e c o r d s a t C a p a n B r a c , L i t t l e Calman p r o b a b l y

e x p e r i e n c e d m a j o r h u r r i c a n e s i n 1 9 1 2 , 1 9 1 5 , 1932 and 1 9 3 5 ; t h e g r e a t s t o r m s r e c o r d e d a t Grand Cayman i n 1 7 8 5 , 1 8 3 7 , 1 8 3 8 , 1 8 4 6 , 1 8 7 6 , 1 9 0 3 , 1 9 0 9 , 1915 and 1917 may o r may n o t have b e e n e q u a l l y damaging i n t h e L e s s e r Caxymans. The e f f e c t s o f s u c h s t o r m s i n c l u d e : t o r r e n t i a l r a i n f a l l ( u p t o 3 0 . 5 cm/24 h o u r s on Grand Cayman); wind damage t o

v e g e t a t i o n , e s p e c i a l l y mangroves; i n u n d a t i o n b y s t o r m s u r g e ; m e c h a n i c a l damage t o c o r a l r e e f s and o t h e r m a r i n e c o m m u n i t i e s ; and c o n s t r u c t i o n o f b e a c h r i d g e s and d e p o s i t i o n o f c o r a l b o u l d e r s a n d r u b b l e i n n e a r s h o r e a r e a s . H u r r i c a n e s h a v e p r o b a b l y a l s o b e e n i m p o r t a n t a g e n t s i n b r i n g i n g p l a n t and a n i m a l c o l o n i s t s t o t h e i s l a n d s from t h e G r e a t e r A n t i l l e s .

Ocean c u r r e n t s i n t h e C a p a n a r e a a r e m a i n i y from t h e s o u t h e a s t . E v i d e n c e c o l L a t e d d u r i n g t h e Cayman I s l a n d s N a t u r a l R e s o u r c e s S t u d y , however, s u g g e s t e d t h e p o s s i b i l i t y o f v a r i a b l e c u r r e n t s i n t h e a r e a

d r i f t i n g p r o p a g u l e s would t a k e some 2 1 0 h o u r s ( a p p r o x i m a t e l y 9 d a y s ) f o r t h e j o u r n e y between L i t t l e Cayman and e i t h e r Cuba o r J a m a i c a .

L i t t l e Cayman s h a r e s many c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s i n common w i t h o t h e r s i m i l a r s m a l l l i m e s t o n e i s l a n d s i n t h e C a r i b b e a n , some o f which h a v e b e e n more f u l l y s t u d i e d and a r e b e t t e r known. These i n c l u d e 3 a r b u d a , A n g u i l l a and e s p e c i a l l y Anegada. Anegada i s v e r y n e a r l y t h e same s i z e a s L i t t l e Cayman: i t i s 16 km l o n g and 3 . 6 km w i d e , and h a s an a r e a o f 33 s q km; i t s maximum h e i g h t i s 4 . 5 m . B o t h i s l a n d s h a v e a f l o r a o f a b o u t 240 s p e c i e s (D'Arcy 1 9 7 5 ; P r o c t o r , t h i s v o l u m e ) . A n g u i l l a a n d Barbuda have a r e a s o f 9 0 and 1 6 0 s q km, and a n n u a l r a i n f a l l s o f 1143 and

L i t t l e Cayman was d i s c o v e r e d on 1 0 May 1 5 0 3 b y Columbus; i t was n o t p e r m a n e n t l y s e t t l e d u n t i l 1 8 3 3 , a n d t h e p o p u l a t i o n ( w h i c h was 23 a t t h e 1 9 6 0 c e n s u s a n d 20 i n 1 9 7 0 ) h a s a l w a y s b e e n s m a l l . S c i e n t i f i c knowledge b e g a n when t h e i s l a n d was c h a r t e d b y H.M.S. S p a r r o w h a w k i n

1880. T h i s c h a r t , w i t h r e v i s i o n s , i s s t i l l c u r r e n t ( A d m i r a l t y C h a r t 462: 1 : 7 2 , 6 3 0 ) . Many e x i s t i n g p l a c e n a m e s w e r e e s t a b l i s h e d d u r i n g t h i s s u r v e y .

A t t e n t i o n was f i r s t d i r e c t e d t o b i r d s . C . J . Maynard c o l l e c t e d t h e r e i n 1 8 8 8 , and a l i s t o f L i t t l e Cayman b i r d s was p u b l i s h e d b y Cory

The p u r p o s e o f t h e E x p e d i t i o n was t o d e f i n e and c h a r a c t e r i s e t h e m a j o r t e r r e s t r i a l and s h a l l o w m a r i n e h a b i t a t s o f t h e i s l a n d s , a n d t o d e s c r i b e t h e m a j o r f e a t u r e s o f t h e m a r i n e a n d t e r r e s t r i a l b i o t a i n r e l a t i o n t o them, t h u s p r o v i d i n g d a t a which c o u l d form t h e b a c k g r o u n d f o r management d e c i s i o n s i n t h e e v e n t o f any p r o p o s a l s f o r m a j o r

i n d u s t r i a l and commercial development. The p e r i o d o f i n v e s t i g a t i o n was o n l y one month, and appeared t o c o i n c i d e w i t h unprecedented

mosquito a c t i v i t y . A c c e s s i b i l i t y was l a r g e l y l i m i t e d t o t r a c k s and t o t r a c e s c u t i n 1974 by t h e C a d a s t r a l Survey o f t h e Cayman I s l a n d s .

Large a r e a s remained u n v i s i t e d , though a e r i a l photograph i n t e r p r e t a t i o n s u g g e s t s t h a t a l l major h a b i t a t s were sampled. The p r e s e n t s e r i e s o f p a p e r s summarises t h e main work o f t h e E x p e d i t i o n .
