'Ornament Now' opens at the Fosdick-Nelson Gallery
Event Date: 10/20/06 Event Time: 6-8 p.m.
Location: Fosdick-Nelson Gallery
"Ornament Now," an exhibition of painting and ceramics, opens at the Fosdick-Nelson Gallery at Alfred University on Friday, Oct. 20, 2006. The exhibition, curated by Lise Lemeland and Sanam Emami, two faculty from the School of Art and Design, brings together five painters and five ceramicists whose work incorporates aspects of ornament in the contemporary culture. The artists include Nancy Blum, Rebecca Catterall, Glenn Goldberg, Jason Green, Lise Lemeland, Matthew Metz, Charlotte Nicholson, Jeanne Quinn, Dan Sutherland, and Robert Rahway Zakanitch.
"Ornament Now" will be on display until Friday, Dec. 1, 2006. There will be an opening reception on Oct. 20, from 6-8 p.m. The public is welcomed to attend.
The Fosdick-Nelson Gallery is located in Harder Hall in the School of Art and Design; open hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, 1 to 3 p.m. on weekends, and closed University holidays. For more information, contact Sharon McConnell, Director of the Fosdick-Nelson Gallery at 607.871.2149, [email protected].
The exhibition was inspired in part by James Trilling, art historian and author, who visited Alfred University in the fall of 2005 as a Dorothy Perkins Lecturer. In his book entitled "Ornament: A Modern Perspective," he states "Ornament is a specific word for a specific thing, yet it cuts across all the arts.
It is the art we add to art; shapes and patterns worked into an object or building for the pleasure of outline, color or fantasy. Often ornament is so familiar as to work subliminally, a kind of visual background music. Sometimes, unpredictably, it claims our full attention."
Clay and paint are materials that come from the same source, and yet are rarely exhibited together.
This exhibition is an opportunity to emphasize the interplay between the two media. The curators chose artists who are attempting to articulate ideas that have common ground, yet are visually and aesthetically different. The works expand traditional notions of ornament while celebrating and acknowledging the splendor of its rich history.
Zakanitch's paintings of pendants and bracelets have a physicality and immediacy of gesture that broaden our perception of beauty and decoration. Charlotte Nicholson's large paintings are comprised of over one thousand leaves of twenty-four carat gold. The surfaces-- slowly built up from a single repeated miniscule mark-transform into a radiating, atmospheric field of gold.
The ceramic artists play with color, shape and repetition as image and surface, and also system and structure. Jeanne Quinn's Rorschach Curtain is comprised of small rigid forms that appear light and fluid and hangs from the ceiling. The silhouette of the ceramic curtain is reflected in a painted panel on the wall. The piece explores ornament as structure and as a window between the wall and the gallery. Matthew Metz explores ornament and decoration on functional pottery. He writes, "While I resist applying direct narrative and literal definition to my iconography, the patterns and images I choose come from my life and experience. Interest in the natural sciences (evolutionary biology, ethology) and history (archaeology, physical culture) find there way, obliquely, into the work."

Lights, camera, fashion! -- 'Project Runway'
Lights, camera, fashion! "Project Runway" winner Jay McCarroll will be on campus Friday, Oct. 27 and Saturday, Oct. 28. McCarroll's stay will coincide with a fashion contest sponsored by the University and will also include a public forum in which McCarroll will discuss his career in the fashion industry.
"Project Runway" is a reality television series on the Bravo Network that focuses on fashion design.
On Friday, Oct. 27, McCarroll will serve as one of five judges for the first annual "Alfred Runway"
competition. Teams of three or four Alfred students will be asked to design and construct an outfit for the following-night's dance, Glam Slam. Teams interested in participating are asked to contact Kevin Jacobs, career adviser, at [email protected] or 607.871.2164. Participation is limited 20 groups, so enter quickly. The prize for the winning team has yet to be revealed but may include some exclusive fashion-related gifts.
The Friday program is free, open to the public, and will begin at 9 p.m. at Susan Howell Hall on the Alfred University campus.
Jacobs will host "Career Conversation" with McCarroll as guest on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m. in the Powell Campus Center's Nevins Theater. Talk will likely focus on McCarroll's experiences in the fashion industry as well as a question-and-answer session. This event also is free and open to the public.
The annual dance, presented by Spectrum, has a long history of outrageous apparel and this year touts a fairytale theme. The challenge: "Create a clothing design that integrates the outrageousness of Glam Slam, the whimsy of fairy tales, and the uniqueness of Alfred. The final product should be prepared for a long night of dancing at the Glam Slam 'Return to Fairy Land,' as it will be worn by the most envied attendee at the event." Expect to see the newly created fashion designs at the Saturday night Glam Slam, which begins at 9 p.m. in the Powell Campus Center's Knight Club. Organizers anticipate McCarroll will also be present.

AWE Hardcore Halloween Preview #1 (scroll down)
Event Date: 10/28/2006 Event Time: 8 p.m.
Location: AWE Arena (aka Davis Gym)
Coming Saturday, Oct. 28 at AWE Hardcore Halloween: AWE World Hardcore Wrestling Champion Ricochet vs. Phil Holliday
Ever since Phil Holliday won the number-one contendership to Ricochet's World Hardcore Wrestling Championship last month, much has been made of the many contrasts between the combatants.
Champion Ricochet is a rapper from the ROC who's gained success both in the ring and on the mic.
What the champion lacks in experience he makes up for in his determination to compete.
His opponent Phil Holliday is a proud Texan who has succeeded at every level of the sport and makes sure everyone knows it. He'll eat his ten-gallon hat before he ever listens to Hot 97, that's for sure.
These polar opposites are alike only in their desire to become World Hardcore Champion: a dream that can be achieved by only one. Who will win this battle of rap versus country, of rookie versus veteran, of fan favorite versus rulebreaker? The answer will come on October 28 at AWE Hardcore Halloween.
