TITLE: The students' ability to translate English text into Indonesian in 12 grade in SMA Negeri 3 Gowa. The students' ability to translate English text into Indonesian (A Descriptive Research at the Twelve Grade of SMA Negeri 3 Gowa). The purpose of this research was to know students' ability to translate English text into Indonesian at twelve grade levels in SMA Negeri 3 Gowa.

Oleh karena itu, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa kemampuan siswa dalam menerjemahkan teks narasi berada pada kategori baik yang dilakukan oleh siswa kelas dua belas SMA Negeri 3 Gowa. Kemampuan siswa dalam menerjemahkan teks bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia (Penelitian Deskriptif pada Kelas Dua Belas SMA Negeri 3 Gowa). Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui kemampuan siswa dalam menerjemahkan teks bahasa Inggris ke bahasa Indonesia pada kelas XII di SMA Negeri 3 Gowa.

Oleh karena itu, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa siswa kelas XII SMA Negeri 3 Gowa kategori baik dalam menerjemahkan teks narasi. Ummi Khaerati Syam, S.Pd., M.Pd, Ketua Jurusan Bahasa Inggris FKIP Unismuh Makassar, juga kepada seluruh dosen yang telah membaptis saya selama saya menempuh studi. Apresiasi setinggi-tingginya saya sampaikan kepada Firdaus, S.Pd., M.Pd selaku kepala sekolah dan Salmiah, S.Pd selaku guru bahasa Inggris serta seluruh siswa SMA Negeri 3 Gowa khususnya kelas XII MIA 2 tahun ajaran 2019/2020 yang telah meluangkan waktu dan aktivitasnya untuk menjadi subjek penelitian ini.

Background

Based on the researcher's previous observation, the use of translation based on the curriculum in upper secondary school, students use translation when they are faced with tasks in the form of foreign texts. Through a brief preliminary observation, it was found that most of the students' translations had some mistranslations at the phrase and sentence level. In addition, Dagiline (2012) found that the use of translation helps students develop and strengthen their knowledge and competences in the English language.

At the end of the research, the researcher found that activities are a useful educational tool. Translation in foreign language classes increases better understanding of the structures of the two languages ​​and also strengthens students' translation skills. It is an effective, valid tool for foreign language learning and can be used in the university classroom to improve knowledge in English.

Meanwhile, Sultan (2018: 2) said that translation is an activity that increases students' awareness of similarities and differences between source and target language grammatical structures between source and target languages.

Problem Statement

Thus, a translator must have a good understanding of the structure of the source language and the target language, because a translation is not just a matter of different word choices, but also of different grammatical structures, although each student has different abilities in translation. Based on the above brief explanation, the researcher is interested in formulating the research title under the title "Students' Proficiency in English to Indonesian Text Translation in the Twelfth Grade of SMA Negeri 3 Gowa".

Objective of the Study

Significance of the Research

For English teachers and lecturers in an effort to improve the quality of English teaching, especially translation skills.

Scope of the study

Based on the findings, they concluded that most of the students' translations were in the less accurate category. Therefore, the common mistakes that the students faced in the translated text was not equivalence the meaning of the text. Whatever the problems of translation, it still has some processes to transfer the meaning of the source language into the target language.

According to Larson (1984: 3), translation consists of translating the meaning of the source language into the receiving language. According to them, translators should use the closest natural equivalent either in meaning or style of the recipient language. In other words, the translation results should not sound like a translation, but without changing the meaning of the source language.

Literal translation refers to the translation that is made only by interpreting the meaning of each unit of the source language; its sentences, words, phrases or clauses in the target language. Refers to the product of translation that reflects the cultural dimension of the language in the transmission of the message from the source language. The purpose of ethnographic translation is to clarify the cultural context of the source and TL versions.

The main use of word-for-word translation is to understand how the source language works, or to interpret a difficult text as a pre-translation process. The main use of word-by-word translation is to understand the meaning of the source language or construct a difficult text as a translation process. A faithful translation attempted to reproduce the precise contextual meaning of the original within the constraints of the TL's grammatical structures.

It tries to be completely faithful to the intentions and realization of the SL writer's text. Free translation reproduces matter without the manner, or content without the form, of the original. In this case, the translator needs to understand the message and meaning of the SL text based on the context, in order to place the correct word in the translation.

Therefore, the translator must have cultural and linguistic knowledge of SL and TL.

Theoretical Framework

From the above conceptual framework, it can be seen that in three steps, the researcher will gain insight into the ability of the students while translating the paragraph from the English text to the Indonesian text towards accuracy and readability. The first entry; By writing text as input, the researcher will make the test for students, which is narrative text in English form in the paper, to know the student's ability to translate English text to Indonesian text. The second process; Once the translation skill is processed, the examiner brings the papers or test to the school (SMA Negeri 3 Gowa) and then the examiner gives the test to the students.

Third exit; the ability to translate English text as output, the researcher will examine the student's test result on their ability to translate English text into Indonesian text which is a narrative text towards such accuracy and readability.

Research Design

Variable and Indicator

The sample was selected using simple purposive sampling technique because there were nine classes in the twelve classes of SMAN 3 Gowa. The research was conducted only in class XII MIA 2 and the total samples were 27 samples from students of class twelfth of SMAN 3 Gowa.

Data Analysis

In order to find the average test score of the students, the researcher will use the following formula. In this chapter, the research gave a report on the description of the data according to the translation work of the students. Table 3.2 shows the ability of students in translating English text into Indonesian narrative text, where the mean score was 7.8 and 78% in the percentage of students who translated English text into Indonesian text.

Discussion

Correct with a minimum of omissions, in addition, the translation can be understood by the reader, but there are certain parts that must be read more than once to understand the translation. Clear meaning without any omission or addition. Words, technical terms, phrases, clauses, sentences or text translations can be easily understood by the reader. The correct meaning with minimal omissions, additions, words, terms and phrases of the text can be understood by the reader.

Based on the analysis of the students' ability to translate from English text to Indonesian, the researcher got the result that from 27 students, only 4 students failed to translate the text. In general, the researcher concluded that students' ability to translate from English to Indonesian, especially in class XII MIA 2kabGowa academic year 2019/2020, is good category.

And from the accuracy and readability common mistakes made by the students when translating English text into Indonesian, the researcher got the result that the common mistakes made by the students is that the students understand the meaning of the sentences difficult to understand because they translate the text word for word.

Suggestion

Students are suggested to practice their translation skills, especially in translating English text into Indonesian text. It is suggested to researchers, it can be a good reference to do a research about student translation with a different perspective. Djatmika, Nababan, M.R, ArestaRia 2018.
