Objectives and Benefits of Study

Objective of Study

Benefits of the study a. For the students

Prior Research

Based on the two studied above, the writer could see that the purpose of the study was known or the common writing error the students made. To understand the deeper problem, the researcher analyzed the writing performance of the students that contained logical reasoning and solid evidence that would convince readers to accept the point of view.

The Concept of Writing 1. The Definition of Writing

The Types of Writing

It tries to make readers feel like they are there or can visualize in their mind what the writer is describing. In expository writing, the writer aims to inform, explain, describe, or define their topic in order to get the readers to believe or disbelieve something.

The Process of Writing

As the first stage in the writing process, planning is a series of strategies designed to find and create information in written form. As the second stage in the writing process, writing is a set of strategies designed to organize and develop a sustained piece of writing.

The Characteristics of a good Writing

Gayle Feng Checkett mentioned four basic misconceptions about good writing that can make writing seem like a chore. The researcher found that good writing should be interesting, clear, concise, effective and reflect the authentic voice of the writer so that the readers get the information or message clearly.

The Concept of Error Analysis 1. The Definition of Error Analysis

The differences between Error and mistake

Brown argues that it is important to draw distinctions between error and error, theoretically in order to substantively distinguish fact. If students create only one incorrect time (slip) it is called a mistake, but when students make mistakes repeatedly it is a mistake that has the function of recognizing the students' ability.

Classification of Error

An error refers to performance errors that are either random guesses or a "slip" that is failure to utilize the known system correctly. An error, an apparent difference from the adult grammar of a native speaker, reflects the students' skills.23 It could be explained that distinguishing between errors and mistakes, through the students' experience.

Source of Error

The mentalist theory posits that errors are inevitable because they reflect different stages in students' language development. It claims that the learner processes new language data in her/his mind and produces rules for its productions based on the evidence.

The Concept Redundancy

The Definition of Redundancy

It will be pointless if we use the same meaning to tell the reader what we want. Dawson, Redundancy is the use of more words than are necessary to express a thought, or the use of two expressions which mean the same thing. It means that redundancy is the use of more than one word to express the same expression or purpose.

Shannon said: The redundancy relates to the extent to which it is possible to compress the language31. Besides that, Alice says about this, redundancy is the characteristic of written language that helps ensure that the reader gets the message, so it is another way through which readers and writers can connect in text33.

Types of redundancy

That's an example of what it defines: Acronyms or initials followed by a word that uses a word that is within the acronym. Note that the last word after the acronym is redundant because it is already used in the acronym itself. Redundant: No, Mom, of course I didn't,” Jessie replied, looking down, avoiding her mother's eyes.

As we saw in the sentences above, a lot of redundancy in writing can seriously degrade the quality of your writing and scare off the readers. There were some readers who didn't have the time and patience to read through a bunch of superfluous stuff.

Redundancy analysis in students’ writing performance

They just want clear and concise content that, of course, got straight to the point. And the last comment from the students is that they could not write sentences longer than 3 lines. James shows students that final exams in English are the most complicated thing they've ever done.

There are three main types or error leads to misunderstanding or miscommunication.41 Causes: the biggest is the use of translation from the first language. The sentences students use can be as lush and long as they like, just make sure that every word, every sentence, and every paragraph contributes something substantial to the writing.

RESEARCH METHOD

Types and Characteristics of Research

In this research, the researcher uses a type of qualitative research known as a case study. Creswell in his book stated that the case study is where the researcher investigates in depth the phenomenon, a program, an event, an activity, a process or an individual more.4 Meanwhile, according to. Case studies can be differentiated from other forms of qualitative research by the fact that these studies focus on a single unit or a bounded system.

The purpose of case study is to arrive at a detailed description and understanding of the entity (the case). Fifth, the qualitative research takes and uses one or more research strategies to guide the procedure in the qualitative research.

Data Resources

The researcher describes the participant, interprets the data, and then draws a conclusion about the predicted data. Therefore, the writer decides to use a qualitative approach to research and analyze common mistakes in student writing. The writer used a primary source (information directly from the people or situation under study) or a secondary source (second-hand accounts of people or situations written by others).

The author selected 30 students from the third semester of The State Institute for Islamic Studies of Metro as participants. The author chose this method because the author wants to know the phenomenon of writing difficulties in the third semester students of the State Institute of Islamic Studies (IAIN) in Metro.

Data Collection Method

  • Test
  • Interview
  • Documentation

Qualitative interviews were special types of conversations or speech events used by researchers to explore informants' experiences and interpretations.8 The type of interviews that the researcher used were unstructured interviews. Unstructured interviews do not follow a system of predetermined questions and standardized techniques for recording information. This method was used to know the students' reason about why they made mistakes about redundancy in their writing performance.

We hope to know the causes of the mistakes that the students made in their sentences. It was not reactive so that the subject could not hide something from the researcher9.

Data Analysis Technique

Data in qualitative research is analyzed by reading and reviewing data (observation notes, interview transcripts and ) to detect themes and patterns that emerge. Interpretation may also involve discussion of how the findings of this study relate to findings of previous studies in students' writing.

Approach

Gary Anderson stated that a case study is a holistic research method that uses multiple sources of evidence to analyze or evaluate a particular phenomenon12. The case study had the following characteristics: (1) the case study takes place in a natural environment (2) the case study uses several methods such as observation, interview and document (3) the case study looks at a social phenomenon (4) the case study examines the issue holistically; and (5) the case study is fundamentally interpretive.

The most common errors found in the use of the word redundant were 114 errors along with the redundant phrase was 89 and the redundant clause was 23. There are some teachers and my seniors who should join the competition.

After calculating the number of errors, the researcher would like to detail the types of errors made by students regarding redundancy. In short, a redundant word is the repetition or rewriting of the same word or the same meaning in a sentence.
