The objectives of this research were not only to improve students' speaking performance but also their learning activity at SMAN 1 Batanghara by using the SLANT strategy. The results of this research show that the SLANT strategy has positive results in improving students' speaking performance among the eleventh graders of SMAN 1 Batanghari. This can be demonstrated by the average score of the students from the pre-exam to the post-exam.

Nilai rata-rata pada pre-test adalah 26, setelah test I adalah 70 dan menjadi 77 pada post-test II. Tujuan utama dari penelitian ini tidak hanya untuk meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara tetapi juga kegiatan pembelajaran di SMAN 1 Batanghari dengan menggunakan strategi SLANT. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa strategi SLANT memberikan hasil yang positif dalam meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara siswa kelas XI SMAN 1 Batanghari.

Based on the result of pre-survey conducted on 26 November 2018 at SMAN1 Batanghari. It was investigated that the eleventh grade students have insufficient speaking performance. Each component of the SLANT strategy contributes to creating effective learners and improving their performance. It is clear that the researcher wants to know if the SLANT strategy used in teaching speaking skills of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Batanghari can improve their speaking performance and their learning activity.

The result of this study can be applied in improving students' English speaking performance and also in improving their performance in the teaching process. Regarding the importance of improving speaking performance using the SLANT strategy, researchers will consider research on improved speaking performance using the SLANT strategy.

In line with the above quotes, the researcher formulates the hypothesis as follows: "The implementation of SLANT strategy can improve the speaking performance of the eleventh grade in SMAN 1 Batanghari in the academic year 2019/2020". The test type was a speaking test that asked students to describe the "advantage and disadvantage of the telephone." Comparison of the students' completion grade percentage in pre-test and post-test I.

The researcher continued the material in the last meeting, the talking topic of this meeting is "the benefit of English songs for teenagers". Furthermore, in cycle II the students'.. average grade was higher than cycle I. the following was the table of illustration grade in cycle I and cycle II. This is supported by the improvement of the grade of the students from pre-test to post-test I and from post-test I to post-test II. 2. The result of students' learning activities in cycle I and cycle II The students' learning activities data was obtained from the entire students' learning activities on observation sheet.

Based on the above data, it can be concluded that the students felt comfortable and active in the learning process, as most of the students showed a good improvement in their speaking skills when the SLANT strategy was applied in the learning process from cycle I to cycle II. d) The ability of the students to perform the task.

The Concept of Classroom Action Research

Classroom action research (CAR) has several models, but in this research the researcher will use O‟Leary research design. The researcher makes a plan, how to stimulate the students through the technique and base the cycle. The researcher prepares the lesson plan, procedure, media and materials to be applied in the classroom.

The researcher gave the conclusion of the material and motivation to work actively in the class in students' speaking performance. Through the process of observation, the researcher knew that the action was achieving the goal of the researcher's goals. By reflecting, the researcher can gain information about the strength and weakness of the action the researcher took.

When the researcher had found the problem in the first cycle, the researcher repaired the problem in the next cycle. The researcher created the material and revised the lesson plan including media and teaching procedure based on the problem that appears in cycle 1. e. Researcher observation format and also reformed the evaluation format to improve the planned indicators that were not yet achieved in the previous cycle.

The researcher applied the same steps in the previous cycle with the collaborator, but the steps were revised in the plan such as lesson plan, material and evaluation tool. The researcher asked the student to accomplish their goal by reminding students to archive the discussion. The researcher asked the students to name important information by answering the teacher's questions, sharing their ideas, and adding statements from other students.

The researcher asked the students to locate the speaker by keeping their eyes on the teacher and the other students in the speaking process. The researcher gave the conclusion of the material and motivation to work actively in the class in students' speaking performance. In the third phase, the researcher observed students' activity, their participation and took a note about the learning process.

Data Collecting Technique

After comparing the distribution of pre-test and post-test scores, the researcher reviewed and reflected on the teacher's perspective and performance whether it is positive or negative. After the treatment to recognize the impact of the technique is able to improve the student's speaking performance. To recognize the student's speaking performance, the researcher uses the form of a question.

In this present research, observation was used to know the speaking performance of students in learning activities. Documentation is a method used to obtain information from a written source or document. In this present researcher, the researcher also did the documentation to know all the information about SMAN 1 Batanghara.

In many professions, it is a matter of good practice to take 'field notes' while you are actually engaged.

The researcher also planned to provide evaluation to measure students' mastery of the given materials. Based on the result above, the researcher indicated that the learning process in cycle II was successful because the students' activity got a percentage >70%.

From the table above, it could be seen that the grade for the students in post-test II was different. Based on the graph above, it could be inferred that the SLANT strategy could improve the students' speaking performance.

RESULT OF THE RESEARCH AND INTERPRETATION

The researcher and the colleague prepared a lesson plan, an observation sheet of the students' activities, identified the problem.
