Institutional membership fell by 1.4%, partly as a result of the bankruptcy of subscription firm Rowecom and the resulting uncertainty about institutional subscriptions. For the first time in the history of our joint meetings, NCPH and OAH have each appointed co-chairs of the Program Committee and the Local Resources (i.e., Arrangements) Committee. Michael Devine of the Truman Presidential Library and Museum is NCPH's delegate to the American Council of Learned Societies.

Another challenge we have faced this year is the editorship of The Public Historian. I find it very commendable that the members of the awarding committee recognized that both inside and outside the traditional. professional settings of further public history. The Selection Committee strongly recommends that you attach a letter from your manager to your application.

To apply: Please submit a cover sheet (include a primary contact name, affiliation, address, telephone number, email address and complete list of each project member and contact information) four (4) copies of a two-page written description of the project explaining its methods, conclusions and significance for public history. The Johnson Award presents a cash prize and a framed certificate to the author(s) of the selected article. I would like to thank NCPH for the opportunity to attend the annual conference and on behalf of the entire class for the award.

Melissa Bingmann of the IUPUI History Department is responsible for organizing what promises to be a stimulating and enjoyable public history weekend.

In the longer term, the committee recommended that the executive director be responsible for spearheading increasing NCPH's annual revenue by securing grants for program development and/or by developing fee-based services that e.g. rate income. The committee recognized that making the chief executive responsible for assessing a portion of the organization's income will necessarily and irrevocably change the nature of this. position. Because the position will be substantially changed, the committee recommended that the chairman and the board form a search committee no later than August 2004.

The committee will (1) define job responsibilities and (2) conduct a national search of candidates for the position. Just as the responsibilities of the executive director will change, so too will the responsibilities of the officers and the board of directors. Therefore, in addition to conducting a search to fill the redefined position, the President must initiate an organizational self-assessment that will redefine the responsibilities of the officers and the Board of Directors. c t o rs.

The committee recommended an ambitious plan of action over the next year to achieve these goals. The Long Range Planning Committee realizes that this proposal and plan of action will place an additional burden on officials and guidelines for the next two years and especially during the coming year. It appears that now is the time to take a major step that we realize is necessary for the long-term viability of the organization at i o n. Action: The Board accepted the Long Range Planning Committee's report and approved the creation of a self-evaluation committee to clarify the committee's recommendations.

The Committee decided to focus its efforts on Australia and Canada during 2004-2005 and to this end appointed Bill Beahen of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to the International Members Committee to explore with Australians Paula Hamilton and Paul Ashton how to market NCPH Global. Marriott Down owns the old Muehleb a ch Hotel, whose 11th floor, called the "penthouse" by President Harry Truman's staff, was the White House in Kansas City when the president owned . The Local Arrangements Committee plans to provide conference attendees with some great Kansas City food — mainly barbecue and steaks, topped with local beer if desired — and to show off to those going on the five planned tours. the most i n t e resting historical sights of the city.

The committee approved tours focusing on Harry Truman's independence (including the Truman Library and the Truman House). The keynote speakers will be Professor James Westheider (University of Cincinnati-Clermont College), author of the book Fighting on Two Fronts: African Americans and the Vietnam War, and Dr. , and we welcome proposals for papers or panels dealing with any aspect of the topics.
