The phrase in the first sentence is an expensive new car is a noun phrase because the head of the phrase is the noun "car" while in the second sentence he is working in the garden is a verb phrase because the head of the phrase is the verb "works". A simple technique for explaining the elements of a noun phrase is to practice identifying the main noun and all its parts. A noun phrase can be used as a subject, as an object of a verb or verb, as a subject or object complement, or as an object of a preposition.

There is not only pre-modifier and post-modifier, but there is also determiner in the formation of noun phrase. A noun head in a noun phrase can be accompanied by determiners (the, an, an, some, etc.) and other modifiers. The noun phrase is a phrase whose head has a noun, a pronoun, a nominal adjective or numeral.15 The main element of a noun phrase is called its head.

Based on the above explanation, it is clear that the noun phrase is the most complex phrase in English because it consists of many modifiers. Focus on specific participants: a particular class or thing, person or place (eg Queen Elizabeth, the times, the bus) rather than generalized participants (eg the royal family, the newspaper, the public, transport.
