Summary
Formulating a clear, concise, and actionable research problem is the most challenging first step in the research process. It is a priority because not all problems can be solved through research. Formulating a research problem indicates the need for empirical investigation in data collection and analysis.
a. Definition of Research Problems
Research problems can be defined and grouped into three categories.
1. Problems are gaps between expectations and reality.
In education, expectations are usually included in the curriculum and syllabus. Tests or evaluations are conducted to find out whether the expectations of the curriculum have been achieved or not. If the expectations do not match the reality, then there is a problem. From here a research problem can be formulated.
2. Problems are gaps between theory and practice.
If there is a gap between theory and practice, it raises two possibilities, that is, the theory is wrong or no longer true, or the practice in the field is wrong. This is what is called a problem.
3. Problems are gaps between what we already know and what we want to know more about.

b. Sources of Research Problems
Research problems can be taken or explored from the theory of human behavior or educational theory.
Research problems can come from the researcher's personal experience or the experience of others.
The research problem can be generated from classroom lectures, class discussions, seminars, or exchanging ideas with peers and lecturers or teachers outside the classroom.
Research problems can appear when students or beginner researchers work on assignments, whether in the form of making summaries, self-study reports, or other tasks.
Technological developments and curriculum changes or developments can be an inspiration.
The most obvious research problems can be obtained from previous research reports.
