INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION

Background

Some students have used a learning strategy when learning English, but some do not. The purpose of learning a language is to use the language for communication interaction between speaker and listener. However, most students sometimes do not have enough vocabulary and pronunciation to be able to hold a conversation.

Brown and Yule (1989:4) said that most speakers of English produce spoken language which is syntactically much simpler than written language, but they also point out that spoken language is often considered learning for the teacher to help students to be able to to express themselves in. But many students can read and write English better than speaking, it is clear that it is insufficient that students can only read and write the target language without being able to speak it. So, in the first stage of language learning, students should be concerned about the spoken language.

Therefore, the writer is interested in finding out the problems hindering the students' ability to speak English. Related to the above description has inspired the writer to conduct a study titled “The Factor Influencing the Low Speaking Skills of the Sophomores of SMA Muhammadiyah 6 Makassar.

    • Suggestions

This means that most students must be supported by audiovisual aids. Based on this reason, the writer suggested that most of the students of SMA Muhammadiyah 6 Makassar are still facing problems in the structure. The percentage of students' level in vocabulary shows that 85.72% of them get a bad grade.

Based on this reason, the writer proposes that most students of SMA Muhammadiyah 6 Makassar still encounter difficulties in vocabulary. This was proven by the average score of the students in the speaking test, which is 4.06, which is categorized as a bad result. The low achievement of students in speaking is mainly caused by the insufficient mastery of the components of speaking as follows.

Vocabulary, which includes choosing appropriate words, correct synonym meaning of words, and limited vocabulary acquisition. Students should be highly motivated to practice speaking actively inside and outside of school. Creative students are expected to create a positive activity where students can practice giving their ideas, aspirations, talent and thinking that can improve their English speaking ability.
