Martha Ann (Matt) Mueller, Associate Librarian Emerita - 1934 2018

Long time Librarian Retiree Martha Mueller passed away on April 4, 2018. "Matt" as her friends knew her was a regular at many Alfred University functions and was a true Saxon supporter. She was an avid team trivia competitor and a supporter of all of the performing arts programs. She joined the NYS College of Ceramics on March 1, 1969 and retired on August 31, 1994. She was born and raised in Joplin, MO and graduated from the University of Missouri with a BS in Education and then received her MS in Library Science from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie-Mellon) in 1958. A world traveler, Matt visited over 20 foreign countries and all of the 48 lower states prior to joining the College of Ceramics. She brought with her an interesting mix of experiences having worked as a Junior HS English Teacher, a Researcher/Librarian for an investment-banking firm on Wall Street, and as a College Librarian. For two years, she lived and worked in Australia at the National Library of Australia in Canberra before returning to the United States and assuming a position as the Head of the Serial Department at the Kresge Library at Oakland University in Rochester, MI. She was predeceased by her sister Jeanne Lewin and had no other living relatives. At her request, no services are planned at this time.

Tomorrow @Cohen Gallery: solo exhibitions by Tim Pauszek and Hope Zaccagni The Cohen Gallery presents concurrent shows by Tim Pauszek and Hope Zaccagni, opening Saturday, April 7, 6:00 - 9:00 pm.

Tim Pauszek: In Cahoots With...

This exhibition highlights the collaborative prints produced in cahoots with and printed by Tim Pauszek.

(4)

The collection features works by SoAD faculty as well as IEA visiting artists who typically work across a diverse range of both 2D and 3D of mediums. Every piece is the manifestation of a conversation between artist and printmaker, who each challenge one another to work within their imposed limitations.

http://www.bluepikepress....

Hope Zaccagni: Salt and Steel

Hope's formalist paintings are constructed with simple, direct color forms. Focusing on color, line, and light allow the artist to create a place for the subject to live. She plays on the geometry of her subject matter in space by paying a great deal of attention to the architecture of the painting and to

emphasize the visual, rather than emotional, elements of the work.

Earth Day Iron Pour

Sunday April 22nd, Noon til Dusk National Casting Center Foundry Cost: Free

Sponsored by: Sculpture Dimensional Studies

Iron is our core, from the deepest depths of the earth, it runs in our blood, to the outermost edges of the cosmos. It is one of the oldest elements in the universe! What better way to celebrate all that the earth provides than to honor the material of Iron on Earth Day.

You are welcome to come watch the spectacle of molten iron being cast into molds. You can make your own cast iron relief tile and its all for a good cause to raise money for students to attend the International Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art. Joining us this year are Visiting Artists Rian Kerrane and Theresa Smith. Alfred University 'Digital Foundry' students will be joined by students from East Stroudsburg University Advanced 3D Lab to cast 3D prints in Iron. Reilief Tiles are available for a small fee of $10 to $20, you can collect your sand mold and carve it ahead of time and bring it to the pour to be cast. Hopefully we will have some refreshments and other items for sale to help raise funds. If you are interested in participating in any other way, please let us know!

Yards for Yeardley Event April 13, 2018

The Alfred University SAAC has decided to take on the initiative of sexual violence victim advocacy this year. Regarding this initiative, April is sexual violence awareness month and we have decided to take part in a Yards for Yeardly Event. The event will take place on Friday, April 13 from 7:00 am - 7:00 pm, during this time we are asking the Alfred University Community to take part in obtaining yards via some sort of exercise method (swimming, biking, running, walking). These yards can be compiled and reported to Jessica Hurlbut. Also, we are asking for donations to the cause . Again, the donations can be given to Jessica Hurlbut, the goal is to reach $1,000 in donations.

Ask Me About Feminism: An Honors Thesis Event Sunday, April 15 from 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Kenyon Allen Room, Powell Campus Center, 2nd Floor

Cost: To register/make a donation, go to https://commerce.cashnet.... ($15 donation required for shirt; shirts limited to the first 30 participants)

(8)

Sponsored by: The Women's Leadership Academy & Honors Department

I have found in most male and sometimes female identifying groups that even saying the word

"feminism" attracts shyness, eyerolls, and huffs of laughter. People purchase shirts at stores like Forever 21 that read "Wild Feminist" thinking it is cool and hip, but at the same time knowing full well they are not educated on what it means to wear that "Feminist" label. This event aims to raise

awareness of ethical consumption and social activism as it relates to feminism. The first 30 participants who sign up and pay a $15 donation to the Allegany-Cattaraugus-Chautauqua Fund for Women will receive a screenprinted "Ask Me About Feminism," sustainable, sweatshop-free shirt. This event is, of course, not exclusionary, as I hope all community members will want to come and educate themselves on the topic regardless of their ability to afford the $15 donation (That said, even the smallest of donations are helpful!). By leading a workshop on the ins and outs of feminism, those that attend will, in turn, be able to teach the people around them about the misconceptions of feminism. I will be showing the participants how to screen-print using "#AskMeAboutFeminism" on distrubutable posters. I will then encourage participants to share these posters and this event on their social media accounts to promote this event as a jumping-off point for the conversation about feminism to continue.

Visiting Artist Lecture: Elizabeth Atterbury April 18, 2018, 4:30pm

Nevins Theater

Cost: Free and open to the public.

Sponsored by: The Division of Drawing, Painting and Photography

The Division of Drawing, Painting and Photography is pleased to present visiting artist Elizabeth Atterbury.

In sculpture, photography and installation, Elizabeth Atterbury constructs minimal objects that frame, intervene and alter space. Drawing on personal history, these objects are both familiar and surprising - the scale and finish shifts any reference to utility and context. Oversized gloves, an abstract wavey length of wood, a tennis court hung on the wall are all given the utmost care and significance.

Atterbury's background in photography is clear, as one moves through her work, individual objects alter in their relationship to the whole, creating new associations. Photographs repeat form and palatte of the objects, emphazing the frame once again. From abstracted photographs of sand, cut metal and cardboard, Atterbury's work has moved back into the three dimensional world, bringing with it a complicated, beautiful simplicity.

Elizabeth Atterbury (b. 1982, West Palm Beach, FL) received her BA from Hampshire College and her MFA from MassArt. Recent solo exhibitions include Mrs., New York; Document, Chicago; The Colby College Museum of Art, Waterville; kijidome, Boston. She has been included in group exhibitions at Et.

al, San Francisco; Western Exhibitions, Chicago; TSA, Brooklyn; Bodega, Philadelphia/New York;

KANSAS, New York; and The ICA at Maine College of Art, Portland, among others. Atterbury is represented by Mrs. in New York.
