SPECIAL MOTHERS AMONG 4,000-PLUS IUPUI GRADS

Most of the time, IUPUI1s commencement falls on Mother's Day, and this year was no exception and it was fitting that degrees were conferred on some very special mothers.

Among the more than 4,000 proud candidates upon w~om degrees were conferred in a nearly flawless commencement exercise last Sunday, we had some special women who believe that their experiences as mothers gave rise to their choice of study. They appreciate their children and the faculty whose support helped them meet their goals. For instance, Tamara Berry in the School of Education, is the mother of five children ages 9-16, the co-recipient of this year's Challenger Award, and she is Topics newspaper's Mother of the Year. Katrina Carlisle, mother of four children who has nurtured 21 foster babies under the age of two, received her bachelor's degree from the School of Social Work, and

received the Outstanding Student Award from her school's alumni association. Judith Pickering has six children, ages 7-16, in four years earned her bachelor's degree from the School of Science1 and is the 1989 recipient of the Robert I. Long Award as the school's outstanding senior. A tip of the mortar board to these fine moms and all our new alumni.--M. Hopper
