Hardiness as a Mediator: Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence and Work Engagement

ABSTRACT
This study discusses the relationship between emotional intelligence and work engagement while investigating the role of mediators from hardiness. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the government issued a new policy in the form of social distancing which aims to reduce the number of spread of the Covid-19 virus. This policy has had a major impact on employees, where employees must be able to adapt back to normal activities during the pandemic to endemic which is the cause of decreased work engagement for workers. This research to determine a role between hardiness as mediator of relationship between emotional intelligence and work engagement among workers in Jakarta. This study uses a quantitative descriptive method. In this study were 667. Instrument: The tools used in this study are Hardiness Resilience Gange (HRG) by Kobasa. The Work Engagement Scale (UWES) by Schaufeli, et al. Emotional intelligence by by Salovey, et al. PROCESS V3.5 Procedure for SPSS from Andrew F. Hayes is used in this study to analyze the mediation regression process. This research shows that hardiness acts as mediator that connects emotional intelligence and work engagement, based on this, relationship between work engagement and emotional intelligence is increasing with the role of hardiness. It is hoped this research can provide guidance to workers and management in Jakarta that it is important to understand the values of hardiness, emotional intelligence, and work engagement so that they can take adaptive actions to changes in endemic period.
