The library's current display, in its history of dentistry series, features an attractive arrangement of books, pictures and other materials depicting the life and work of Horace Wells, dentist, who is credited with the discovery in 1844 of the use of anesthesia in surgery. The library has available the several books used in the display and recommends them as compelling and gripping accounts of this medical pioneer's relentless battle against the age-old spectre of human suf- fering.

DENTAL DIVISION LAUNCHES NEW PROGRAM AI\"D STlJDY IN INDIANA SCHOOLS
several school systems in the state will participate in a dental referral program this year. Under the program, each child will take home a card request- ing that he be taken to the family den- tist for examination and treatment. Af- ter completion of work, the card __ , signed
by the dentist, is returned to school.
The schools' teachers and nurses work together to implement and follow-up the program, which is intended to eventually include all Indiana school children.
Doctors Gish and Muhler have begun a self-application topical fluoride study in the Frankfort schools. The purpose of the study, which is to be continued for two years or longer, is to measure the anticariogenic benefit afforded by several fluoride compounds incorporated into a compatible paste when self-ad- ministered by children using a tooth- brush. Self-application is a new con- cept in preventive dental care.
