CAPPING CEREMONY SCHEDULED The Capping Ceremony for First Year Dental Hygiene students will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 8th at the Student Union Building in Room M 124. Members of the faculty are cordially invited to attend. DENTAL ALUMNI LUNCHEON Dr. William Gilmore, President of the IUSD Dental Alumni Association, announces that the Annual Midwinter Alumni Luncheon will be at 12:15 p.rn. Monday, February 22 at the Blackstone Hotel in Chicago. Mr. Bill Wade of the Chicago Bears will be the headline speaker and Indiana University's new football coach, John Pont, will be a special guest. Luncheon reservations may be obtained at the door or at the Hospitality Room which the Alumni Association will maintain during the Chicago Dental Meeting in Room 535-A of the Conrad Hilton Hotel. Healey, Chairman of the Publications Committee of the American Association of Endodontists, prepares and issues a quarterly Newsletter to the approximately 850 members of that organization. Originally a three-page issue fourteen years ago, the current issue, December, 1964, contained fourteen pages of interesting and valued news for those in the field of endodontics.. I.u.s.D.. DOCTORS PARTICIPATE. Doctors Dykema, Gilmore, and Simpson are participating in a three-year course in Gnathology, being held at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry.. EXPLORERS EXPLORE The Dental Vocation Explorer~ Post 349 toured the dental research facil-. ities at the dental school on January 20, 1965. Drs. Standish, Mitchell, Van Huysen, Hennon and Norman demonstrated facilities and equipment and presented a program on dental research to the Explorer group. DR. BURSTONE AT CONVENTION Doctor Burstone is attending the convention of the Angle Orthodontic society in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. After the convention recesses on January 29, he will fly to San Juan, Puerto Rico on official business. RAD IO LOGY NOTES. RE SEARCH IN ULTRA-VIOLET Graduate students are busy with their research projects in the Oral Diagnosis-Oral Medicine research lab in Room 217. If you happen to notice the lights are all off, it is merely because Dr. Arden Christen is using ultra-violet light microscopy to study fluorescent stained specimens. This does make it a bit difficult for Kae and Shirley to work, but much interest has been created in the tetracycline staining which is detected by fluorescence, and many patients are being found with this problem. BOOKWORMS IN ORDER DEPARTMENT Stanley Crunk and Claudia Hand are planning to enroll in spring semester evening classes at the Indianapolis Downtown Campus of Indiana University.. Dr. Jack Carr~ Department of Radiology, spoke on the history of dentistry on the Nell Coates Program ('WAIV-FM) January 23, 1965. The Landauer Film Badge Service is now being used in the department to detect the amount of radiation deliver• . ed to students and personnel. Films worn by the students are returned to the company each week for processing and exposure determination while personnel badges are worn for one month. Weekly Film Badge Dosimetry Reports are posted on the department's bulletin board. PARADISE ENOW. Current and near-current dental journals are now to be found on shelving which has been placed in the extreme northwest corner of the Library's main floor. This is adjacent to a long-existing rack for current and nearcurrent non-dental periodicals.. PRE-DENT INTERVIEWS INCREASE Mrs. Harvey reports that the pre-dental interviews have increased markedly during the mid-semester vacation.. The jug of wine and the loaf are still taboo, but thou art welcome and there is comfortable seating plus the latest and most stimulating reading matter within easy finger's grasp.. (3) -3DR. JOHNSTON LECTURES AT ST. LOUIS U.. Dr. Johnston lectured January 12, to Junior and Senior Classes at Saint Louis University and participated in a Seminar for Graduate Students. NOTES FROM THE DEAN'S CALENDAR Dr. Maynard K. Hine has been nominated to represent the American Dental Association on the Department of Defense Advisory Committee. On January 28 through 30, Dean Hine will be attending a conference on dentistry at the Greenbriar, White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. He will present an address at the capping ceremony for dental hygiene students in Fort Wayne, Indiana at the I~U.-Purdue Regional Campus on Sunday, January 31. Dean Hine will attend a meeting of the Dental Program Project Committee of the National Institute of Dental Research in Bethesda, Maryland on February 4 and 5. PROF. PHILLIPS IN ST. LOUIS Prof. Ralph w. Phillips presented a postgraduate course at the School of Dentistry, St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri on January 25, and attended a meeting of the Research Committee, American College of Dentists in st. Louis on January 29 and30. DR. SHAFER PRESIDES Dr. William Shafer presided as chairman at the meeting of the Ad Hoc Committee on Cancer Teaching at the American Association of Dental Schools in Chicago, Illinois, January 5. SPEECH PATH. FOR SR. HYGIENISTS Dr. Bernd Weinberg will teach a six-week course in Speech Pathology for Senior Hygiene students February 9 through March 19.. PEDODONTIC NEWS Dr. Jean Paul Lussier, Dean of the Faculty of Dental surgery, University of Montreal, visited Dr. Gerald Albert. Following his graduate work in Pedodontics here, Dr. Albert will return next fall to the University of Montreal to teach. The case presentation room, newly re-furnished with carpet, drapes and furniture, gives pedodontic students an atmosphere closely resembling that of their future office in which to present plans of treatment to parents. TEACHING CONFERENCE SEPT. 12-15 The Teaching Committee wishes to remind the faculty of the Teaching Conference Sept. 12-15 at Spring Mill Inn, Spring Mill State Park, Mitchell, Indiana. DR. McDONALD GRADES CARVINGS. Dr. McDonald was in the American Dental Association Office in Chicago Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week participating in the grading of 4,200 carvings submitted by students who took the aptitude test earlier in January. DR. DAVIS AT TERRE HAUTE MEETING Dr. w. Bailey Davis, Director of Riley Hospital Dental Clinic, participated in the Western Indiana Dental Society meeting in Terre Haute on January 21, where he discussed dental procedures in the hospital.
