Indonesia is a country with megabiodiversity, diverse culture, and rich history and language. It is also a country called supermarket disaster in which thousands of disaster cases happen each year. In the last 50 years, Indonesia has grown as a leading country in many aspects, but we still have homeworks, including securing our planet.

Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)

reported that human contributes to the deterioration of the environment through various form of activities.

Meanwhile, inequality has been shadowing the development in Indonesia. This is a big challenge for Indonesia, especially in eastern Indonesia. The rise of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a global framework is strongly in line with the mission of our university as a hub to the eastern Indonesia. We are keen to create innovative and effective solutions to the current societal and environmental problems by integrating the fundamental roles of university that is called Tri Darma Perguruan Tinggi (Education,

Research, and Community Development).

Through the spirit of Humaniversity and Communiversity, Universitas Hasanuddin has committed to expanding the scope and benefits of its presence. The transformation process moves from beneficial to people to contribute to community and humanity. This spirit transition becomes the effort to equip the academic

community of UNHAS to continue to care and get involved in solving humanity issues wherever the academic community and alumnae have existed.

"What controls earth long-term climate?"

was an idea proposed by Prof Adi Maulana, the head of The Center of Disaster Study Universitas Hasanuddin in the matchmaking batch one meeting in Boston, Massachusetts at the end of 2019. The proposal is a part of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)-Indonesia Research Alliance (MIRA).

This program brought together researchers from Indonesia and collaborated with professors at MIT in developing strategic research topics, including energy,

biotechnology, economic, health, and transportation. Indonesia is rich with geological formations that allow us to understand the earth phenomenon, including climate change. The geological research collaboration between Prof Adi Maulana and Prof Oliver Jagoutz from MIT includes analysing tectonic events that are connected to the global climate.

UNHAS has been involved in the Partnership for Australia-Indonesia Research (PAIR) project. This project is a collaboration with 11 leading universities in Australia and Indonesia as well as national and local government institutions to contribute to sustainable development through evidence-based decision making. It is focusing on four research domains, including commodities, transportation, logistic, supply chain, youth health and wellbeing, and youth development. UNHAS involves in evaluating the development of South Sulawesi railways and its implication to the social, economic, culture and environment in the surrounding areas.

The project focuses on mproving agricultural productivity by trengthening rural-urban

connectivity that will directly be linked to Goal 2.

The sustainable and affordable transportation system will be beneficial for the households

economic improvement that strongly contributed to Goal 8. Improved access and transportation will lead to achieving the targets in Goal 9.

Indonesia is known as one of mega biodiversity center in this universe, covering the largest portion of Coral Triangle Area and home for extensive coral reefs. The research found, however, many of Indonesia coral reefs are heavily degraded due to high anthropogenic effects and environmental changes. UNHAS, through the Center of Excellence for Marine Resilience and Sustainable Development, led by Prof Jamaluddin Jompa, takes a role in

international collaboration under the 4D-REEF Consortium. This collaboration aims to

investigate the role of turbid reefs for the future of the coral triangle as they respond to

environmental change. The grow reefs in turbid habitats (an area that received terrestrial run-off) is the center of this project as presumably had a significant role in the origins of the formation of reefs in Coral Triangle and potentially have a role in preserving future coral reefs.

In collaboration with Monash University, and international researchers, UNHAS has been involved in the Revitalising Informal Settlements and Their Enviroment (RISE) project taken place in 12 informal settlements in Indonesia. The project is implemented the localised water sensitive cities (WSC) approach to reduce the environmental contaminants. UNHAS team consist of researcher from Faculty of Public Health to conduct health and environmental assessment, while the

researcher from Faculty of Engineering supported development and implementation of the water sensitive infrastucture.
