Vanderbilt is recognized as one of the leaders in research among medical schools in the United States. The faculty of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine acknowledges its responsibility to present candidates for the M.D. Students then enter the graduate school (Ph.D.) portion of the program after the second year of medical school.
Faculty at the School of Medicine have professional responsibilities at Vanderbilt, Veterans, Saint Thomas and Baptist hospitals. All physicians at the VA Hospital are full-time employees of the School of Medicine. Master's work in this department is regulated by the PhD school's faculty.
The student, by registration, recognizes the authority of the Student Honor Council of the School of Medicine. Students will usually take step 1 at the end of their second year and step 2 in their fourth year.
The school does not require students to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) for promotion or graduation, but it is required for licensure. Successful completion of the medical curriculum courses and scholastic status are determined by the nature of the student's daily work; the results of examinations, which may be written, oral or practical; and observation of the student in action. The medical school curriculum gradually builds on the course work of each previous academic year.
Each subsequent year's courses require increasing levels of coordination and integration of the previously presented material. Therefore, thorough knowledge and understanding of each subject and the appropriate level of skill are required to maintain satisfactory progress in the medical curriculum. The summative assessment of academic performance for each subject is reported on the following basis:

With nominations generated from the fourth-year class, this award is presented to a member of the graduating class who possesses the intangible qualities of common sense, knowledge, thoughtfulness, personal warmth, gentleness and self-confidence that combine to form the "ideal doctor": the person who classmates would prefer to have as their personal doctor. This special scholarship was established by members of the Burrus family to help defray the cost of tuition for medical students. Rush, a 1941 graduate of the School of Medicine, this scholarship honors the dedication he showed to the practice of medicine and the community in Frankfort, Kentucky.
