She had auburn hair, laughing eyes, and a warm, kind smile, and it seemed like I could never see enough of her. Marlin and I built a canoe and when it was finished we were very proud of our creation - but Mom. We finally agreed to drop it on the irrigation canal - and luckily we did.
That canoe we had loved and labored over so long had tipped us upside down before we were a dozen yards from the shore. And not until we promised to wear those life jackets while in the canoe would she give her blessings to the proposed trip. Steven's old station wagon and got in with Nero, who was just along for the ride, and Janet, who was going to drive the station wagon home.
It was a bright August morning and all three of us sang songs and spoke happily as we rode up the river. Near the Wyoming line, where the river boils out of the Grand Canyon of the Snake, we had a picnic lunch and got ready to start pushing. We carried the canoe to the river and put it on the water. We then carefully packed all our gear into the bottom and positioned it to get the canoe.
Marlin carefully stepped into the canoe and I followed him after saying goodbye to Janet. He let out a mournful howl, ran down to the canoe, and tried to climb aboard. He made a mighty lunge, jerked free from Janet, and jumped across the six feet or so of open water into the canoe.
Janet screamed: Marlin yelled, "Nero!" and threw his weight to counterbalance the force of the huge dog: and I put all I had to keep us from capsizing. I tried to right the canoe in the fast, rough water so we wouldn't be wrecked. We were already a hundred meters downstream and it was many kilometers to another place where Janet could get a car close to the river.
