Life after nursing school: A qualitative study examining the traditional BSN student's experience of choosing an initial practice area. The purpose of this study was to explore the traditional BSN student's experience in choosing an initial field of practice and influences on that choice. It is important to better understand the traditional nursing student's experience in choosing an initial practice area.
The purpose of this study was to explore the traditional experiences of BSN students in choosing an initial field of practice. What are the experiences of a senior traditional baccalaureate nursing student in choosing an initial field of practice. Initial field of practice - the first job a traditional BSN student seeks to obtain after graduation.
Review of Literature
A study conducted by Gillespie (2013) compared the views of nursing students in the United Kingdom and Scotland regarding factors influencing these individuals' attitudes toward clinical placements, perceptions of future relevance regarding these clinical studies, and similarities between aspects of the participant that encourage similar views. . The results of this survey include a ranking of the students' favorite clinical specialties. The qualitative research resulted in two themes, including 'perception of the nursing profession' and 'the students' decision-making process'. Positive aspects such as job security and negative aspects of nursing being seen as a feminine profession were noted in the findings.
In the study, Baccalaureate Nursing Students' Intention to Choose a Public Health Career, researchers examined nursing students' likelihood of choosing a career in public health education after nursing school and what influenced this decision (Larsen, Reif, & . Frauendienst, 2012). In addition, students enrolled at the small liberal arts college were more likely than the state college students to intend to choose a public health career. The instruments used in the quantitative studies may not have fully explored the richness of the experience.
Methodology
Interview transcriptions were used for data analysis and as examples in the study report. The start of the interview was considered as consent to participate in the study and to use the obtained data. After transcribing the interviews, the researcher extensively analyzed each transcript as a whole and segment by segment.
Validity of the study was established using a consistent process of analysis to minimize researcher biases and perspectives. The transferability of the study was determined by the researcher providing enough descriptive data so that the consumer. In the next chapter, the researcher's interpretation of the themes arising from the analysis of personal interviews is presented.
Data Analysis

Caitlin did not say that she had an idea of an initial field of practice before nursing school. Caitlin had no idea of her initial field of practice when she started nursing school.
However, she described changing her initial practice area with each clinical experience during nursing school. Therefore, she seemed to see her initial practice area as a gateway to other practice areas in the nursing field. Emily described going to nursing school with an initial practice area in pediatrics.
Emily's first area of practice will undoubtedly be anywhere she can work with pediatric patients. She seemed to genuinely accept that her original practice area might change. She had no specific preference for an initial practice area as long as pediatrics was the patient population.
She also said that her preconceived idea of an initial practice area was to be a pediatric nurse. Lisa's clinical experience in labor and delivery confirmed her feelings for labor and delivery as an initial practice area. Ultimately, she most enjoyed the experience in the emergency room and developed this preference for her initial practice area.
Marie expressed her desire to pursue further training in her preferred initial practice area in the critical care setting. This positive experience confirmed the initial practice preference initiated by clinical experience. Jane's initial practice preference did not deviate throughout clinicals and nursing school classes.

There were cases where participants did not have a strongly defined preconceived notion of the original practice area prior to nursing school. This was the case with participant Caitlin, who did not have a preconceived notion of an initial practice area. All participants selected an initial practice area within the area of prior clinical exposure.
None of the participants chose an initial practice area to which they had no exposure during clinical time. In these cases, clinical experience eliminated areas other than the preconceived notion as options for an initial practice area. This change from a preconceived preference of initial practice area is also demonstrated by Christy's reflection.
She had not previously considered an initial practice area in the emergency room; however, clinical exposure sparked her interest in this field. In this study, the researcher found that increased exposure to populations helped form the idea of the first practice area. Two influences on the experience of choosing an initial practice area were identified during analysis of the data.
Other nurses emerged as an influence on the choice of an initial practice area. Her synthesis preceptor has also served as a role model for her preferred introductory practice area. In addition, two influences were identified that contributed to the traditional BSN student's experience of choosing an initial practice area.
These themes, variations and influences emerged from the analysis of participant's experience in choosing an initial practice area.
Discussion of Findings
In the final semester, all surveyed traditional BSN students selected the initial practice area to which they were exposed in clinical practice. Additional exposure to the population was also demonstrated when participants shared their experiences in choosing an initial area of practice. This study explored the experiences of traditional BSN students in selecting an initial field of practice.
Although the development of interventions was not the focus of the current study, practice implications may stem from increased understanding of the traditional BSN student's experience in selecting an initial practice area. The current study contributes to healthcare administrators' understanding of traditional BSN students' decisions regarding initial field of practice, particularly students entering programs in the United States. Newly graduated traditional BSN students can potentially fill the practice area with the greatest nursing shortage.
Nurse educators can use the study findings to inform curricular and course decisions, particularly regarding clinical experiences, to best assist traditional BSN students in choosing their initial practice area. Research regarding the traditional BSN student's experience of choosing an initial practice area and its influences is very limited. Additionally, the existing knowledge base regarding the experience of the traditional BSN student choosing the initial practice area would benefit from a longitudinal study.
