REVIEW OF THE RELATED LITERATURE

Some Pertinent Ideas

  • The Concept of Reading
  • The Concept of Comprehension
  • Vocabulary
  • Concept of Bio-Poem

Brown (1989) explains that extensive reading is done "to gain a general understanding of a text that is usually somewhat longer (a book, long article or essay, etc.). The goals of extensive reading are to build the reader's confidence and enjoyment. It is not surprising that reading one of the important skills in learning a foreign language. If students only read and do not understand the content of the text, it means that there is a failure in understanding.

We can interpret that reading comprehension is the ability to understand or acquire the passage. Miller (2003) argues that reading comprehension is the ability of students to understand; when they read, they should not only be able to read the words fluently, but also be able to tell the story accurately. From the above explanation, we can conclude that reading comprehension is an active recognition process of the reader to construct the meaning of the text.

In other words, reading comprehension is the process of understanding the author's message by combining the meaning of the text and the images in the reader's mind. These are very important abilities to support students' development in reading comprehension. In this ability, students should be able to remember a fair proportion of the factual information or ideal expressed in a passage.

In this ability, the students should be able to choose the important and relevant point, and the students should be able to understand the meaning and the significance of the fact and ideas. d) The ability to draw conclusions from what has been read. The most important thing in making the inference is the ability of the student to know what the author means in material. e) The ability to reach general conclusion and judgement. Usually poems consist of some stanzas and they have similar sound at the end of the line.

4 Student response includes at least 2 key details from the passage that support the main idea of the passage. This means that the students' average score in Reading Comprehension improved from the Pretest to the Posttest. This indicated that the use of Biogedig was effective in improving the students' reading comprehension.

As miller (2003) explains that reading comprehension is the ability of students to understand when they read, they should not only be able to read the words fluently but also tell the story accurately. A bio poem can improve the reading ability of SMA NEGERI 8 TAKALAR second grade students, especially in finding the main idea and specific information.

Conceptual Framework

Hypothesis

RESEARCH METHOD

Population and Sample

The population of this research included four classes consisting of 30 students per class. Due to the small number of population using Random Sampling Technique, the researcher chose class XI IPA1 because this class is heterogeneous.

Variables and Indicators

These were the dependent variable and the independent variable, which was a variable that affects another variable. The independent variable was Using Bio Poem; an important process for improving a student's vocabulary in reading comprehension. The dependent variable consisted of students' vocabulary achievement focusing on main idea and specific information.

The main idea is the "big point" or most important idea that the writer is communicating to the reader. It is the guiding idea, all the other supporting details in the text or in a paragraph should tell us more about the main idea. Supporting details are the evidence such as reasons or examples that support main ideas.

The instrument of the Research

3 Student response includes at least 2 details with at least one key detail from the passage that supports the main idea.

Procedures of Data Collection

To find out the significance difference between the pre-test and post-test by calculating the value of the test. The findings of the research covered with the description of the result of the data collected through the test. The table above showed that the students' average score in Main Idea was 7.3, the students' average score in Specific Information was 7.5, and then the students' average score in Literal Understanding was 7.4.

In other words, teaching reading with bio poem, especially in productive skills, can increase students' reading comprehension. This section presents a discussion of the discussion of the result of the data analysis. The discussion is aimed at describing the student's reading comprehension after the lesson using the Bio poem.

Based on the data collected through the pre-test and post-test, it showed that the students' reading comprehension through biopoem, especially in productive skill of the second grade students of SMA NEGERI 8 TAKALAR after the treatment was better than before the treatment. This can be seen by the difference between the average score of the pre-test and post-test, where the average score of the post-test was higher than of the post-test was higher than the average score of the pre-test. This can be seen in average score of Main Idea improved from 6 to 7.3, average score of Specific Information also improved from 6.2 to 7.5 and then the average score of Literal Comprehension improved from 6.1 to 7 ,4.

This technique could help students develop their minds when conveying or changing information in the form of tables and diagrams in sentences or paragraphs. During the pre-test, some students were not clear about the main idea of their reading ability, difficulties in determining the main idea and specific information, while the reading comprehension of the students in the post-test has improved. It is determined by the performance of the students after the treatment. In other words, I would say that in understanding the text, the two main aspects that the students should have are the main idea and the specific information of the text.

From the discussion above, it showed that the second grade students of SMA NEGERI 8 TAKALAR have reading abilities by using Bio Poem. Finally, the researcher concludes that the use of Bio Poem in reading can improve students' language competence. It showed that the t-test value was higher than the t-table value (5.4> 1.699), while the mean score of the students' pretest (6.1) was lower than the mean score of the students' posttest (7.4) by the percentage of student improvement 21.3.

The English teacher should provide material in the form of biopoems when teaching reading as one strategy to increase students' reading comprehension. The teacher should create a good teaching atmosphere in the classroom to stimulate the students' interest in learning to read English.

Table above showed that the students
Table above showed that the students' mean score in Main Idea was 6, the students' mean score in Specific Information was 62, and then the students' mean score in Literal Comprehension was 6.1
