An Analysis of Errors in the Use of Simple Past Tense in Narrative Text by Third Semester Students of English Department at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar (Descriptive Research). Under the thesis of the Department of English Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Muhammadiyah University of Makassar, under the supervision of Hasnawati Latief and Wildhan Burhanuddin.
The purpose of this research was to discover the types of errors in the use of simple past tense in narrative text and dominant errors made by the third semester students of the English Department at Muhammadiyah University, Makassar. The population of this research was the third semester students of the English Department of Muhammadiyah University, Makassar. The findings of this research showed that the students made a total of 371 errors, which were classified into four categories based on the surface strategy taxonomy.
Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the third semester of English Department students at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar had many mistakes in writing narrative text especially in the use of simple past tense. The students need more practice in using simple past tense to familiarize them with it and they can compose a good narrative text. All praise is to Allah, the lord of the universe, who bestowed strength and health on the researcher to complete this research.

Based on the researcher's experience when studying at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar, many students have problems in writing English, especially in using simple past tense. Based on the reason above, the author is interested in the study titled "An Error Analysis on the Use of Simple Past Tense in Narrative Text Made by the Third Semester of English Department Students at the Muhammadiyah University of Makassar". What kind of mistakes are made by the Third Semester of English Department Students at the Muhammadiyah University of Makassar about the use of simple past tense in narrative text.
What is the dominant mistake made by the Third Semester Students of the Department of English at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar in using the simple past tense in narrative text. To find out the types of mistakes made by Third Semester Students of English Department at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar in the use of simple past tense in narrative text. To find out the dominant error made by the Third Semester Students of the Department of English at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar in the use of simple past tense in narrative text.
Then it is expected that this research will help English teachers to know the mistakes students make in using simple past tense in their narrative text. The limits of this research is to analyze the errors of students' narrative text focused on the use of simple past tense, especially the use of to be (was, was) and verb tense (regular, irregular verb) by using making of surface strategy taxonomy.

The result of the data analysis showed that: the total errors in the use of simple past tense made by the tenth grade students were 147 errors. Error analysis on the use of simple past tense in English narrative text written by students of SMKN 1 Tengaran in the academic year 2016/2017”. The objectives of his research were to find out the types of errors that occurred in the use of simple past tense in English narrative text and to find out the profile of the type of errors students make in using simple past tense in English narrative text.
The connection with this research is to analyze the error of using the simple past tense in students' narrative text. The differences of the research are in the scope of the research, the objectives of the research and the subject of the research. Malformation is characterized by the use of the incorrect form of the morpheme or structure.
Misordering errors are characterized by the incorrect placement of a morpheme or a group of morphemes in the utterance. Incorrect position for the adverb of time, made by the learner in the target language, just like in the first language. Context' refers, for example, to the classroom with its teacher and its materials in the case of schooling or the social situation in the case of an unlearned second language.
In this step, the researcher must decide a number of students who are the sample of the research. Identifying errors: to identify errors, the researcher should compare the sentence produced by the students with the correct sentence in the target language. Thompson & Martinet as cited by Aminah (2016) the simple past tense is used for action completed in the past at a certain time.
It is used to show activities or states in the past, without showing any connection with the present. Azar says that the simple past tense indicates that an activity or situation began and ended at a specific time in the past. Use the Simple Past Tense to express the idea that an action began and ended at a specific time in the past.
It tells the audience who is in the story, when the story takes place, and where the action is taking place. It sets up a chain of events that affect what will happen in the story.

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION
Findings
The objectives of the research aimed to know the types of error and also the dominant error in the use of simple past tense in the narrative text made by the Third Semester Students of the Department of English at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar using the Surface Strategy Taxonomy. After the data was collected, the researcher analyzed the data, identified and highlighted the points of error. Students' writing was identified and classified based on error types according to Dullay et al (1982).
This concerns 88 errors of omission, 46 errors of addition, 234 errors of deformity and 3 errors of misordering. The table below shows the percentage of each type of errors made by students when using the simple past tense in narrative text. The first among the highest number was an omission error with 24% of the total errors.
Second down from the highest number was addition error with 12% of the total errors. The graph below shows the dominant error on the use of simple past tense in narrative text made by the students. The researcher concluded that distortion was the predominant error in the use of simple past tense in narrative text made by Third Semester of English Department Students at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar.
