TITLE: Improving Students' Ability to Read News Text Using Old and New Information (Experimental Research in Eleventh Grade SMA Muhammadiyah 9). Enhancing Students' Ability to Read News Text Using Old and New Information (An Experimental Research in Eleventh Grade SMA MUHAMMADIYAH 9 MAKASSAR) Department of English Education Thesis. Data collection is used pre-test and post-test to determine students' reading comprehension before and after treatment.

The result of the data analysis through the reading test also showed that the mean score of the pre-test was 79.2 and the post-test was 85.2, while the standard deviation of the pre-test was 18.7 and the post test 11. There was a significant difference of students' reading comprehension before and after teaching the text of a news item. The pre- and post-test data can be combined to compare the sebelum treatment and the setelah treatment.

Background

When reading the text of news items, students are expected to read their product grammatically, express their ideas, and draw conclusions as steps to develop rhetorical devices in the reading form. The researcher who leads and reads a news report using old and new information can help students learn English very well. So that students can easily read the composition of the news item and make their text understandable.

This means that teaching reading comprehension in news text using the FQR strategy had a significant effect on students' reading comprehension performance. Therefore, the researcher intends to find out the effect of the news feature on the students' reading comprehension.

Definition of Reading 1. The Concept of Reading

Readers must use all the knowledge of their brains to understand the text and pay attention to the text itself for words, phrases, sentences, and connections between sentences in order to understand the text. In the process of reading, the reader is influenced by past experiences, language background, cultural framework and purpose of reading. Effective and efficient reading is always purposeful and focuses primarily on the purpose of the activity.

Silent reading tends to reinforce the reader to figure out the meaning of the words. According to the National Reading Panel (2000), comprehension is one of the five key components of essential reading instruction. It should involve the reader in actively making decisions, solving problems, and using background knowledge in an attempt to make sense of the passage.

Reading comprehension will recognize the purpose and important point of the text in addition to the surface meaning of the text. The process of comprehension involves deciphering the writer's words and then using background knowledge to construct a rough understanding of the writer's message. Based on some definitions above, we can conclude that reading comprehension is the reader's ability to construct meaning from a text.

Instead, they provide information that readers can use to read by making inferences that integrate text information with their prior knowledge.

Types of Reading

Creative reading involves going beyond the material presented by the author, creative reading requires the readers to use their imaginations in creative solutions to those by the author. Teaching reading comprehension Teaching is an activity in which the teacher guides and facilitates learning, gives the learners a chance to learn and sets the conditions for learning (Brown, 2001). Guidance is done by guiding the students to do activities in an effort to gain knowledge.

The teacher can help the students acquire the knowledge by providing facilities such as tasks. By giving these tasks, it means that the teacher lets the students study on their own. In order for the teaching and learning process to proceed smoothly, the teacher must create a good learning situation for the students.

When setting good conditions, the teacher must consider the classroom method or technique he is using, as this may affect the way the class is conducted. Based on the above definition, teaching reading comprehension can be defined as the guidance given by the teacher to students to achieve their knowledge, which is reading comprehension, on texts using a certain technique. When teaching reading comprehension, the teacher should learn about the micro-skills that students should master.

As stated in Brown (2001), there are fourteen micro skills that the students must do to achieve their reading comprehension.

The stage of newsworthy events is set early because the reader must get the perspective of the events before deciding whether to read. Background events is news that provides information about events leading up to. It can include information about how and why the events happened, the circumstances surrounding the crisis.

After the lead-up events, the news writer will often give more information about what happened during and after the crisis that is likely to happen in the future. The news report must show where the journalist got the information about the events. The sources point to the significance of the events leading up to and following the crisis, making the events newsworthy.

For example, in the devastation of North Queensland…., last night……, in the declaration of disaster areas…., in immediate response to reports of extensive damage…., etc. According to Eltis, the text of the news is used to inform the readers about the events of the days that are considered important or significant. Type of research that is pre-experimental research using one class as a sample. The first and last meetings are intended for the implementation of the pre-test and the post-test, while the other three meetings are intended for the implementation of the treatment.

The researcher offered the students a test in the form of a multiple choice question to determine the students' ability in reading comprehension.

Data Analysis

In order to make the raw scores more meaningful, they need to be converted into numerical data that has been processed on a scale from 0 to 100. If the scores of all students were arranged from high to low, it would be easier to know the position of the student in his group. To determine significant differences between pretest and posttest by calculating test values ​​using SPSS.

Findings of the Research

After calculating the pretest score of the students, the mean score and standard deviation are presented in the following table: The above table showed that the mean score of the pretest students was 79.2, which only categorized as "Sufficient" but did not achieve the standard of completeness . The post-test was done to measure the students' reading achievement after the treatment.

Firstly, the researcher tabulated the raw score and then determined the quality of the students in percentage and score classification as follows:. From the table above, it can be seen that the students' post-treatment score was 20% Excellent, 30% Very Good and 10% Good, which meant that the majority of students achieved the standard completeness score. After calculating the students' post-test result, the mean score and standard deviation were shown in the following table:

The table above shows that students' average post-test score was 85.2 which only categorized as Fairly, but it did not meet the completeness standard. Analysis of t-test is used to find out the significant difference between the students' pre-test and post-test. This indicated that there was a significant difference between the result of the students' reading performance in reading comprehension after treatment.

It can be concluded that there was a significant difference between the results of the students' performance in reading comprehension before and after teaching the news text.

Discussion

The students would make the different learning process as the students understood what they had read. It indicated that students were more active and helped those who remembered the main idea, supported details and concluded to understand the text. Finally, the researcher made the post-test to know the students' reading comprehension after using news and the result from the students' reading test.

Literal comprehension represents the students' ability to understand the content of the text. Main was also able to help students better understand what they read and retain information for longer. Based on supporting details, students' literal comprehension was categorized as very good in supporting details on the pretest, and after treatment was categorized as excellent in supporting details on the posttest.

Based on the conclusion that the students' interpretive understanding before the discussion was categorized as very good in the conclusion on the pretest, and after the discussion it was categorized as excellent in the conclusion on the posttest. From the above discussion, it is stated that active reading is still necessary to improve students' reading comprehension level. According to the results of the research, the students made significant progress in reading after the treatment.

In addition, based on the research results, students' performance learned news text by using old and new information is better than the use of a conventional way.
