Students' reading comprehension (A pre-experimental research in the second year of Yayasan SMA Perguruan Islam Makassar), under the thesis of the Department of English Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Makassar Muhammadiyah University, directed by Sulfasyah and Abd. The purpose of the research was to find out whether the intensive reading technique was able to increase students' reading comprehension or not, which refers to students' ability to understand words and main ideas. Research findings showed that the use of intensive reading technique can increase students' reading skills in terms of understanding words and main ideas, especially in reading the article or short text.

It showed that students' reading proficiency in post-test was higher than pre-test. This meant that there was a significant difference in the students' reading skills before and after they were taught using the Intensive Reading Technique.

In fact, a study on reading skills in Indonesia found that students' skills, especially in reading comprehension, are still far from satisfactory. If the teaching strategy is suitable for the students, they will learn with pleasure. Therefore, students need a new technique, approach or method that could develop their reading comprehension ability.

In relation to the previous background, the researcher formulates the research question as follows: Does the Intensive Reading Technique increase the literal reading comprehension of students in the second year of Yayasan SMA Perguruan Islam Makassar. Whether or not the intensive reading technique increased the students' literal reading comprehension in the second year of Yayasan SMA Perguruan Islam Makassar.

Along with listening, speaking and writing, reading is one of the most important skills in language learning. Again, it's a fairly quick read with immediate rejection of all irrelevant information, perhaps most of the text. A combination of these two from a phrase is a clause and a sentence of text.

While understanding is "the act of understanding, the ability of the mind to understand". Comprehension is the reason for reading. PROCESS : refers to the implementation of the input variable in classroom activities both teaching and learning through the Scaffolding Method.

The use of Intensive Reading Technique is effective in increasing students' reading skills in word meaning. Before undergoing treatment through “Intensive Reading Technique”, the researcher conducts a pre-test to measure the students' prior knowledge of reading in English.

This can be proven by looking at the students' score between pre-test and post-test. The average score of the students' word meaning in pre-test was 65 and post-test was 77. On the other hand, the average score of the students' main idea in pre-test was 55 and post-test 70.

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

Findings

The research findings show that the Intensive Reading Technique increased the reading comprehension of Yayasan SMA Perguruan Islam Makassar second year students in terms of word-for-word comprehension that addresses word meaning and main ideas. It can be seen from the table below, which describes the indicators of the students' results for the meaning of the word. The result of the average score in the pre-test and post-test above, where the average score of the students in the word understanding in the pre-test is 65 categorized as fair and the average score of the students in the word understanding in the post-test is 77 categorized. as good.

Moreover, from data above, it can be seen that the progress of the students' reading skills in terms of word meaning after being taught through the use of Intensive Reading Technique is 18.5%. Based on the table, it indicates that the use of Intensive Reading Technique in the teaching and learning of reading is successful. Apart from data above, it can be seen that the progress of the students' reading skill in terms of main idea after being taught through the use of Intensive Reading Technique is 27.3%.

The use of Intensive Reading Technique is effective in increasing students' reading skills in literal comprehension in terms of word meaning and main idea. The result of the mean score in pretest and posttest above, where students mean score of word meaning and main idea in pretest is 65 and 55 categorized as fair and poor; and students' mean scores for word meaning and main idea in the post-test are 77 and 70 categorized as good and fairly good. The classification of the students' scores in the pre-test and post-test table - 4.4 The frequency percentage of the students' scores in the pre-test.

And after giving treatment achievement of the students in their reading comprehension through Intensive Reading Technique as a technique, out of 16 students. The progress of the students' mean scores from pre-test to post-test can be seen in the following table. The result of the mean score in the pre-test and post-test above, where the students' mean score in the pre-test is 60 and categorized as fair and the students'.

Discussion

It is therefore concluded that the use of Intensive Reading Technique is effective and suitable for teaching reading in literal reading comprehension to the second year students of Yayasan SMA Perguruan Islam Makassar. The application of Intensive Reading Technique in the teaching of reading comprehension in the second year of Yayasan SMA Perguruan Islam Makassar can increase the students' performance and their ability to understand the material of reading comprehension on the learning process. After the pre-test was given, the researcher found that the students' words' meaning and main ideas at the second year of Yayasan SMA Perguruan Islam Makassar were weak, so it should be increased.

In order to increase students' literal reading comprehension, the researcher decided to use the Intensive Reading Technique and then prepared the lesson plan and teaching material to do the treatment during four meetings. The researcher found that the students' reading comprehension in the literal sense that dealt with the meaning of the words and the main ideas was increased. In conclusion, it was relatively fair to assert that the use of intensive reading technique in the reading class of second year senior high school students can increase students' reading comprehension ability.

The use of intensive reading technique can increase students' literal reading comprehension in the second year of Yayasan SMA Perguruan Islam Makassar covering word meaning and main idea. Using the intensive reading technique is one of the effective techniques in teaching and learning reading comprehension to increase students' reading comprehension. English teachers are suggested to use intensive reading technique as one of the effective methods in teaching and learning process, especially in teaching reading skill.

The teachers are suggested to be more creative and sensitive to students' need to learn English. It is suggested to the following researchers, they can use Intensive Reading Technique to increase the students' reading skill for the other component or variable of reading, because the researcher observes only a small part of the component of literal reading comprehension, including word meaning and main idea . However, it is better to have friends of the same age group and cultural backgrounds.

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

Conclusion

It can be concluded from the result of the student's statistical t-test value for both components, including word meaning and main idea variables for literal reading comprehension, is greater (4.48) than t-table value (1.753).

Suggestion
