The results of this research were (1) The students' problems in writing narrative text cover grammar, vocabulary, spelling, handwriting, punctuation and layout. The title of this thesis is "An analysis of students' problems with writing narrative text at SMAN 2 Ponorogo.".

Research Focus

Furthermore, there has never been any research related to narrative text problems at this school. What are the factors that cause problems for students in writing a narrative text at SMAN 2 Ponorogo.

Research Objectives

Significances of Study

The results of this study can inform readers of descriptive research on students' difficulties in writing narrative text. This research contributes to students exploring their writing abilities and learning from their shortcomings in writing narrative text.

Organization of the study

Concept of Teaching as a Foreign Language

Students find it difficult to learn English as a foreign language because it is different from their first language or mother tongue. Based on the foregoing explanation, it can be concluded that teaching English as a foreign language is a process of guiding students in learning English.

Writing

Writing is learned through an instructional process in which we must master the language rather than learning certain structures that are rarely or never used in speech but are essential for effective communication through writing.14 Writing is also an important part of education and the livelihood of our society. and functional basics. The final stage of the writing process is editing, where the paper is checked for errors such as grammar, punctuation, usage and spelling.

Teaching and Learning Writing

Writing, as one of the four skills, has always been part of the English curriculum. According to the explanation given above, teaching and learning to write can be summarized as the act of helping students acquire new knowledge while being aware of the importance of meaningfully exploring their thoughts or ideas in written form.

Types of Text

In other words, writing is the process of meaningfully exploring our thoughts or ideas on paper.23. To describe things using various natural, artificial and social phenomena in our environment.

Overcoming difficulties in Writing Narrative Text

As a result, the teacher not only evaluates the students' shortcomings, but also appropriately supports and corrects the students' mistakes. When we do this, it helps improve students' knowledge of the types of grammatical errors they have made, and suggests that they verify their errors using a grammar textbook. The students came up with the idea that the teacher should use different instructional methods to improve students' academic writing.

Students often have to practice writing narrative text so that there are no typos, and missing spelling or context when a letter is wrong or missing from a word, so that readers get a different understanding. The instructors will correct any grammatical mistakes made by the students so that the children can gain a greater knowledge of the problems they are facing.

Review of Previous Studies

An analysis of students' ability and problems to write descriptive text (A study in second grade of SMPN 3 Bontonompo. 2019)”. Investigation of students' problem in writing Retell Text of the eighth grade of SMPN 4 Bandar Lampung in the academic year of 2016/2017. This study used qualitative research to analyze the problems students face in writing Narrative text.

As a research instrument, researcher conducted interviews, questionnaires, documentation and collected data related to students' difficulties in writing narrative text at SMAN 2 Ponorogo. The researcher also investigated the causes and ways to overcome students' difficulties in writing narrative text.

Data Analysis

Consequently, the data are analyzed by the researcher as the first rater and the English teacher as the second rater.

The teacher is interviewed in this step to obtain information about the students' problems and causes in writing narrative text from the teacher and how to overcome students' in writing narrative text. Questionnaires are used to validate interview and documentation results as well as to obtain detailed information from students about their problems and the causes of their problems with writing Narrative Text.81.

Data Validation

Overcoming Difficulties in Writing Narrative Text

The data on the ways of overcoming difficulties in writing narrative texts can be clarified based on the results of interviews as follows: The teacher was interviewed to obtain information on how the students overcome the difficulties in writing narrative texts could overcome. The result of an interview to know the ways to overcome in writing narrative text is as follows:

Based on the above data, the result of the interview showed that the teacher overcame the students' difficulties in writing narrative text by writing through questions, pictures, picture sequences and one day a sentence in English. The Students’ Difficulties in Writing Narrative Text at SMAN 2 Ponorogo

The teacher told the lesson that most of the students often experience difficulties in using verbs and tenses. The students need clarification to use, a/an, most of the students often experience difficulties in using an article. And from the interview showed that students often experience difficulties because most have not yet studied the material.

There were 65.7% of students who have problems using vocabulary, the students need help to use the appropriate vocabulary. Based on the results of the narrative text writing problems above, the students still face numerous challenges when writing narrative text, such as grammar, vocabulary, spelling, handwriting, and punctuation.

The Factors Causing the Students’ Difficulties In Writing Narrative Text At SMAN 2 Ponorogo

Motivation was a significant factor that contributed to students' difficulties in writing narrative text, as they felt spirit and interest. The lack of practice caused students difficulty in producing narrative text because students rarely practice writing stories in their free time. The existence of feedback from teachers of relevant subjects will promote students' skills in creating narrative text.

Based on data and theory, the researcher analyzed that the reasons for students' difficulties in writing narrative text were the student's lack of motivation, insufficient time, lack of practice and teacher feedback. Students who needed to understand more and students who were lazy to learn to write and create narrative text in English.

Overcoming Difficulties in Writing Narrative Text At SMAN 2 Ponorogo

From the data and theory, the researcher analyzed that overcoming the student's difficulties in writing a narrative text consists of Bryne and Hasan, Marzuki's construction theory that overcoming the students' difficulties that occurred, the teacher improves the student's knowledge skills, motivation to overcome the difficulties in writing, Strategies/methods work. For some students in school, the teacher's job is to write an Indonesian narrative text and change it into English. Students rarely practice writing because they are interested in something other than narrative text.

From the data and theory, the researcher analyzed that overcoming students' problems in writing the narrative text consisted of Bryne's that took place grammatical correction of the teacher improves students' knowledge skills, Increased reading can improve vocabulary skills, creativity increases, and the students practice writing narrative text. The result of the interview and questionnaire showed that the students overcome difficulties in writing narrative text, such as: The improvement of the students to overcome difficulties in writing.

Suggestions

Do your students have trouble using the appropriate verbs and tenses when writing narrative text? 4 Have your students struggle to determine the use of a and the (article) in writing narrative text. 5 Do your students have problems determining the correct word order such as a phrase, clause or sentence in writing narrative text.

7 Challenge your students to switch sentences such as compound, complex sentence in writing narrative text. 13 Do your students have problems with the use of upper and lower case letters when writing narrative text.
