RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

Quantitative research is the research that explains phenomena by collecting numerical data that will be analyzed using mathematically based methods (in particular statistics).17. However, Daniel decided that there were two types of quantitative research design, namely experimental design and non-experimental design. The experimental design is a test under controlled conditions designed to demonstrate the known truth or to test the validity of a hypothesis.18.

Population, Sample and Sampling Technique

  • Population
  • Sample
  • Sampling Technique

Therefore, the population in this research was all eleventh grade students at SMK Daarul ‘Ulya Metro, which consists of 20 students. The sample is the part of the population that will be reached.20 The sample of the research as respondents were the eleventh grade students at SMK Daarul 'Ulya Metro, consisting of 20 students. The students scored low in speaking, the class was used for the control class and the experimental class.

Aggregate sampling is the process of selecting the sample in such a way that all individuals in the defined population have an equal and independent chance of being selected for the sample.21. Based on the above statement, because the total number of subjects was less than 100 people, the sample of the study was the eleventh grade students, which consists of 20 students.

The Operational Definition of Variable

  • Independent Variable
  • Dependent Variable

Dependent variable is the main variable that measures or observes to determine how and if it is affected by the presence of the independent variable.24 The dependent variable of this study was students' speaking ability that would be measured by an oral test.

Data Collection Technique

The result of students' pre-test for speaking skills in the eleventh grade of SMK Daarul 'Ulya Metro. The result of students' post-test for fluency in 11th grade of SMK Daarul 'Ulya Metro. To find out if there was a positive and significant significance of using a storytelling strategy for the speaking skills of the students in the eleventh grade of SMK Daarul 'Ulya Metro.

The results of the pre-test and post-test scores of speaking ability in eleventh grade of SMK Daarul 'Ulya Metro. Therefore, it can be concluded that “it was a positive and significant strategy of using the story strategy to increase the speaking skills of students in the eleventh grade of SMK Daarul ‘Ulya Metro”. Based on the research result, the researcher can conclude that the storytelling strategy has a positive meaning on the speaking ability of students in the eleventh grade of SMK Daarul ‘Ulya Metro.

The use of storytelling strategy was significant in the speaking skills of students in the eleventh grade of SMK Daarul 'Ulya Metro.

Research of Instrument

Data Analysis Technique

Daarul 'Ulya Vocational School has satisfactory facilities to support both learning activities and leisure programs. The organization of vision for Daarul 'Ulya Vacational School Metro in the academic year 2018/2019. After using story telling strategy, the researcher analyzed the data by using t-test to prove if there was a positive and significant by using story telling strategy on students' speaking skill in eleventh grade of SMK Daarul 'Ulya Metro as follows (Ha) is accepted if was a positive and significant using storytelling strategy on students' speaking skills.

In conclusion, the use of story-telling strategy could improve students' speaking skills in the eleventh grade of SMK Daarul 'Ulya. Eleventh grade students of SMK Daarul 'Ulya Metro took a pre-test and a post-test, where the researcher gave them a certain treatment that included a story-telling strategy before conducting the post-test. The average score of speaking skills of students in the eleventh grade of SMK Daarul 'Ulya Metro in the pretest was 45.6 and in the posttest was 56.85.

It means that there is a positive and significant significance to using a storytelling strategy in the eleventh grade of SMK Daarul 'Ulya Metro.

RESULT OF THE RESEARCH AND INTERPRETATION

Description of Data Analysis

  • Brief History of Establishment of Daarul ‘Ulya Vocational School
  • Building Condition and School Facilities
  • Total of the Teachers and Students at Daarul ‘Ulya Vocational
  • Data Description of Daarul ‘Ulya Vocational School Metro

MA Khusnul Khotimah which was led by Mr. Hendry, M.Pd decided to split and move to Mawar 21 Metro Road in 2012 as an independent institution. From the above history, Daarul 'Ulya Vocational School can be categorized as one of the few rest schools in the Metro which was built earlier than others, having been established in 2010. As the first program, Daarul 'Ulya Vocational School Ulya still has the TKJ program for all classes, but it does not matter because the solidarity of Daarul 'Ulya Vocational School Metro is built around its vision and mission, which are simply dedicated as the main starting point for the implementation of the system.

Description of The Research Data

  • Pre-test Result
  • Post-test Result

From the above data, it could be deduced that the highest scores were 60 and the lowest scores were 32. In summary, from the pre-test result, the researcher found that the students' problem was in using an ineffective strategy in teaching of the learning process. . After considering the pre-test result of speaking ability in the oral test, the researcher conducted the treatment of the storytelling strategy to help the students gain a better understanding of speaking ability.

Beware of this, the researcher identified the students' difficulty in speaking ability in the oral test and offered story telling strategies to know if it had a positive and significant impact. Furthermore, after the students in this class were given the treatment of the story strategy and they already understood it, the researcher gave the post-test to measure their speaking ability in the oral test. Source: documentation of the post-test result of the speaking ability in the oral test collected on November 12, 2018.

In summary, the post-test result was categorized in adequate category, although several students still lacked storytelling strategy for students' speaking ability, but overall there was some improvement to help students gain better understanding.

Discussion

To be precise, storytelling as an alternative strategy, the students acquired such speaking skills to learn English. More precisely, there is a positive and meaningful use of storytelling strategy on the students. The fact showed that there was a change in the number of students who got lower scores.

Finally, the story-telling strategy could be a solution for teaching the learning process, especially speaking, because it made students more active during learning. They also got a lot more opportunities to explore all their ideas and creativity. By using this strategy, the teaching and learning process was more interesting, enjoyable and fun as it involved visual skills and creativity among the students so that they could better cooperate during the learning process.

Limitation

It can be used as a strategy and it can improve their speaking skills and make the students easier and more fun in the learning process. It is suggested to the teacher to use Story Telling as a strategy in the learning process to improve the speaking skills of the students. It is suggested to the students to be active in the learning process to understand the material, especially in the speaking class.

The principal should provide more benefits to the students so that the students will be more enthusiastic about learning English.
