Oral Tradition as a Source for Digging Up the History of Parakan as a Heritage City

1 Introduction

This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License 4.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/). One of the historical areas in Indonesia that has been designated as a heritage city is Parakan, a small city in Central Java, Indonesia. Parakan is not very well known by the people of Indonesia because it is only a small town and it starts to know since the central government designated the town to become a heritage town in 2015 through Piagam Komitmen Penataan Pelestarian Kota Pusaka.

The city of Parakan used to be a trading city in the colonial era, the city is very well known as a city of tobacco, coffee and spices, although not all Indonesians know Parakan equally well. According to the film by "Filosofi Kopi" who acted as a setting in the movie, Parakan has recently become famous among teenagers for its coffee and scenery. On the other hand, Parakan has a history that is still not well known by the Indonesian people.

Parakan has been famous because of the story of the Bambu Runcing pioneer known as Kyai Haji Subuki or Kyai Bambu Runcing or General Bambu Runcing. In the colonial era, Parakan was well known by the Indonesian soldier as a town of Bambu Runcing. Many Indonesian soldiers from other cities came to Parakan to meet Kyai Haji Subuki and asked him to make Bambu Runcing as a traditional weapon to fight the Dutch.

This research will explore the history of Parakan, especially the history of Parakan in the colonial era, while the Bambu Runcing was created from time to time for a traditional weapon. The main issue of this study is the lack of information about Parakan in written or literary sources. Thus, the researcher conducted an oral tradition as an approach to excavate the history of Parakan, especially the history of Kyai Bambu Runcing and the activities within the city of Parakan.

2 Research method

3 Oral tradition as a history itself

As historical research, the researcher will take on oral tradition from the local community as a primary source to unearth Parakan's history. On the other hand, Vansina (2006) has defined oral tradition as verbal testimony that is transmitted from one generation to the next or one later, which is more precise. He has claimed the oral tradition as a proper historian's source and defined himself as a true historian.

The researcher understood very well that oral tradition was considered a source of knowledge about the past (history). According to Vansina (2006), this approach to oral tradition in some traditional region was used as oral testimonies of the past that are passed from one person to another, from one generation to another. To construct the past or history, the local community tries to use oral tradition from generation to generation.

The greatest effort in this revitalization is the inclusion of all parties that support the oral tradition. Although the researcher will use the limited written sources to compare with the history from the oral tradition approach. The researcher believes that this approach to oral tradition will expand the knowledge of this study and also improve the quality of this research.

By using this oral tradition approach, the researcher will also understand that an architectural research in historical method could be completed with this approach. It was mentioned by Grant [2] that limited archaeological engagement with the oral tradition presents both an opportunity and a challenge. This research is a narrative oral tradition approach which involves some respondents as a source of the story and they will tell the story in narrative method.

The whole research, the researcher will try to discuss the history of Parakan from oral tradition approach which will be divided into three parts, Parakan before Islam Era (Hindu Era), Parakan after Islam Era, and Parakan as a place to revolution from to begin with. Indonesia soldier in the fight back from the colonials.

4 Findings and results

In the first and second part, the researcher has interviewed some academics and historians to get some information about the history of Parakan before and after the Islamic era. But in this paper, the researcher will only discuss the third part, which is the discussion of Parakan through the history of Parakan as the City of Running Bamboo. The researcher has spent time with some important respondents to dig up the history of Parakan, especially the history of Parakan as the City of Running Bamboo.

The history of Parakan as the city of "kaum" and the city of Bambu Runcing, the morphology of Parakan from time to time. The story of Parakan in colonial era when the soldier comes and goes to make Bambu Runcing as traditional weapon, the story of KH Subuki as pioneer of Bambu Runcing, the story of Parakan as a base camp for Indonesian soldier from all cities in Indonesia. The researcher was able to formulate the history of Parakan chronologically, especially the history of Parakan since the colonial era.

The researcher believes that this tradition of transmitting information about the history of Kyai Haji Subuki, Bambu Runcing and Parakan has been preserved very well among the family and local community in Parakan. And one of the agenda is to keep the history of Parakan as a town in Bambu Runcing running with Kyai Haji Subuki as the significant person. The story of KH Subuki, the story of Parakan as the city of Bambu Runcing and KH Subuki's family tree.

The history of KH Subuki, the history of Parakan as the city of Bambu Runcing and the family tree of KH Subuki. By interviewing the important respondents, the researcher has collected all the information of the history of Parakan, especially about the history of Parakan as a city of Bamboo Running and a heritage city. Cultural heritage includes all the object related to the history of Parakan either for the history of Bambu Runcing or the history of Parakan itself.

The soldier's activities started from the Old Parakan Railway Station and ended at Masjid Al Barokah Bambu Runcing (Mosque of the Running Bamboo).

5 Conclusion

Mapping the Activities of the Indonesian Soldier in Making Bambu Runcing as a Traditional Weapon in the Colonial Era Source: Analytical Result, 2018. From all the above discussions, it is clear that oral tradition is becoming an important source for history to to excavate from Parakan. Researcher proved this condition after some interviews with some key and important respondents to hear the story of Parakan as a city of "kaum", city of "Bambu Running" and heritage city.

All the important respondents were selected because they have an important role in Parakan, either as a historian, observer, eyewitness, grandson and granddaughter of an important person in the colonial period (KH Subuki). The tradition of occasional storytelling in Parakan has been preserved in the Parakan community. The local community will not lose the story of Parakan, especially Parakan as the city of Bambu Runcing, because this term is not only a brand of the city, but it is a history that happened in Parakan, especially in Kauman.

The significance of historic building to be preserved and preserved should be referred to their history. Old buildings that have so much historical value will be of significance to be preserved and preserved. An important topic that has a lot to do with history is the community itself, especially the local community living in a surrounded area of protected natural areas.

Although, there is a main issue how to the history of an area that lacks literature and. This research is based on several years of study from 2016 to 2019, which has now been incorporated as part of a dissertation for a doctoral program.
