At this moment, reading is one of the language skills that must be mastered by students because reading is an essential factor that affects one's activity in communication. The result of the interview revealed that the eighth grade of high school students had a problem in reading. When the writer asked about the students' reading ability, the teacher said that the students are weak in reading comprehension.

To solve the above problem, the teacher must choose a method or strategy that can arouse the students' interest and encourage their involvement. The reason leads the writer to conduct a study titled “Improving Student Reading Skills Using Targeted Activities Relating to Texts (DARTs) Strategies among Eighth Graders of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Metro in the Academic Year 2018 Based on the above problem identification, the author would like to focus on the use of Directed Activities Related to Texts (DARTs) strategies for students' reading skills, which were only performed for grade 8 of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Metro.

The aim of this research is to know if strategies for directed activities related to texts (DARTs) can be an effective way to improve the students' reading skills.

Reading must not only read the text, but they must also understand the meaning of the text. Based on the middle school curriculum included in intermediate readers, they should be able to provide main content, central ideas and some supporting details of narrative text types on familiar topics such as simple instructions, general information and meeting arrangements.7 . The assessment depends on the completeness and accuracy of the students' answers to this question.

Using prediction helps students get an idea of the general organization, main topics, and subtopics of a piece of text. There are different ways of using questions, for example: .. the teacher frames the questions .. the students question each other in pairs or small groups .. the teacher asks a thought-provoking open-ended or open-ended question and asks the students to consider and discuss , nomination of a member of the group to respond. The teacher asks them to read aloud parts of the text that confirm or deny their predictions.

The use of directed activities related to texts (DARTs) can improve the reading skill and the learning activities among the eighth graders of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Metro.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The Subject of Research

Action Plan

  • Concept of Classroom Action Research
  • Classroom Action Research (CAR) Cycles

The research method used in this study was classroom action research (CAR), because the researcher wants to encourage the students to be active in learning process activities and improve students' reading skills by using the Directed Activities Related To Texts (DARTs) method. While the learning processes the researcher observed at the same time as the learning activity. At the end of this step, the researcher performed a post-test to know the result of the treatment.

In this step, the researcher observed the process of teaching learning by using form observation. In reflection, the researcher analyzes and discusses results during teaching learning, as well as the weakness and strength the researcher and the students have made during the learning process. the researcher decides that the next cycle focused on the weakness of the priview cycle. The researcher explained to the students how to link ideas, to express ideas about the material using directed activities related to texts (darts).

In this step, the researcher observed the process of teaching learning using observation format to collect the data in action plan II.

Data Collection Technique

Tests are a set of stimuli that are given to the individual to obtain answers based on the assessed.16 In this research, the tests are divided into two parts: pre-test and post-test. First, a pre-test is presented to the students before they implement targeted activities related to the text method to evaluate their skills in the first place. Second, the post-test is presented to the students after they have learned reading comprehension using targeted activities related to the text method to find out the improvement before and after treatment.

A field note is an observation instrument used in CAR to provide a record of what takes place during an observation, which includes description of places, people, objects, actions, activities, events, purposes, times and feelings.17 In this research, the researcher uses field note to find out the frequency or activity of the learner during the learning process.

Data Analysis Technique

It could be deduced from the result of the pre-test that the scores of the students differed. The table above showed that the students' scores on post-test II were diverse. The result of the pre-test shows that most of the students have a hard time taking a test.

In this study, the researcher conducted the post-test 1 to know the mastery of reading narrative text of the students. It could be seen that most of the students had finished achieving material and the research was successful. Based on the result of the pre-test, post-test I and post-test II, it was known that there was a positive significant increase in the students' score.

Based on the graph above, it can be concluded that DARTs could increase students' reading narrative skills. It is supported by the increasing score of students from pretest to posttest I and from posttest I to posttest II. 3. The result of students' learning activities in I. and II. cycle Data on the students' learning activities were obtained from the entire Data on the students' learning activities were obtained from the students' entire learning activities on the observation sheet. I'll never forget it: who knows I might be able to spice you up a little one of these days?” The lion was so excited at the idea that the mouse could help him.

She locked her children in a cage 3 “The witch fell into the furnace and the stepmother closed the door.

RESULT OF THE RESEARCH

Interpretation

  • The Result of Students Learning
  • Comparison of Score In Pre-Test, Post-Test I In Cycle I, And Post-
  • The Result of Students’ Learning Activities In Cycle I And Cycle II

The researcher conducted the pre-test to know the reading skills of the students before implementing the treatment. It shows that most of the students have not yet met the minimum mastery criterion (MMC) 70. It showed that most of the students have not yet reached the minimum mastery criteria of 70.

The author conducted the post-test 2 to know the students' reading comprehension ability after the treatment was implemented. It showed that most of the students completed the minimum standard criteria (70). It could be seen from the students can reach the minimum mastery criteria (MMC) from 2 students to 13 students became 21 students.

The number of students asking/answering questions from the teacher was increased from the first meeting to the next meeting. The students could do .. they were brave to answer even though not all the questions could be answered well. The students who could complete the task improved. It could be seen on cycle I 56% and cycle II also 80%, it improved 24%.

Based on the above data, it is concluded that the implementation of DARTs improved student learning activity, as most students showed good improvement in learning activity when DARTs were applied in the learning process from cycle I to cycle II. The teacher must motivate the students to be active in the learning process. It is suggested to the students to be more active in the classroom learning process and improve their reading comprehension skills so that they can be successful in learning English.

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

Suggestion

One day the farmer calmed down, but calm did not come. The farmer went to the cow: "Dear cow, please help me pull up his turnips. Then the farmer went to the cat: "Oh my dear cat, please help me pull up this turnip," said the farmer.

5 What does the man do to the bird because the bird cannot say the name of a place. Some hunters, who were to carry him alive to the king, tied him to a tree while they went in search of a wagon to carry him in. The little mouse went to him and soon gnawed away the ropes that bound the king of the blows .

One day the bear called the rabbit and told the rabbit to take his bow and arrows and come with the bear to the other. When he got close to the door, he would kick the meat with such a big kick that it would fly into the rabbit's house, and that way the poor rabbit would get his meal. Meanwhile, their stepmother at home began to wish she had never tried to get rid of the children.

Many hours later, her legs tired from walking and her lips parched with thirst, she reached the cottage that belonged to the witch.
